I hope this publication gives you a flavour of what we have to offer as a school. Ever since starting at Farr, I have known there is something special about the warmth of welcome that is offered to those who come through our doors. Indeed, one of the key strengths of Farr High School is the quality of relationships between pupils, staff and the community and I believe that this is one of the greatest strengths of our school. As a small school with small classes, we have unique opportunities. Curriculum for Excellence puts the learner at the centre and that is exactly what we are able to do. Our teachers and all our school staff know every pupil well. Furthermore, the small classes enable teachers to personalise learning and spend more time helping every pupil to progress and develop their knowledge and understanding. For a small school we are able to offer a wide range of qualifications and through our recently developed links with Thurso College we are able to offer an impressive range of subjects to our senior pupils. It is an exciting time in education and schools, with increased flexibility in the Senior Phase and a real focus on personalising learning pathways for pupils to ensure we are not only equipping them with a portfolio of qualifications but also with the necessary skills for learning , life and work. It is a time for embracing the values and principles of Curriculum for Excellence to improve the outcomes for all our young people. For me as Head Teacher, one of the greatest joys of my job is getting to know our pupils and helping them progress towards their chosen goals. At the heart of our school are the people and relationships which help shape our pupils. I believe in a school community where all feel valued, where all feel safe and where all are included. I have an aspirational approach to education with high expectations. I believe we should constantly be striving to do what we do better, helping and supporting all our young people to achieve. Farr High School is an 11-18, S1-S6 comprehensive, non-denominational school. The school first opened its doors in May 1964 and its current roll is approximately 68. 7 Although Farr is one of the smallest secondary schools in Highland Council area, it has a catchment area of 531 square miles. Gaelic is offered to learners and fluent speakers throughout S1—6, with a Gaelic Medium Education available in a number of subject areas in S1-3. ENROLMENT / CLÀRACHADH Farr High School is the local school for pupils from Melvich, Bettyhill, Tongue and Altnaharra Primaries. Enrolment forms for these pupils are distributed via the primaries when the children are in Primary 7. Transport arrangements, organised by TEC Services, will be finalised once pupil numbers are confirmed. Information can be found from the website link: http://www.highland.gov.uk/learninghere/schools/informationforparents PLACING REQUESTS / IARRTASAN SUIDHEACHAIDH Each school serves its own particular catchment area. Pupils whose homes are located in that area will have priority in being allocated a place in the school. However, parents have the right to specify the school in which they wish to place their child. Application must be made to the Area Education Manager, Caithness and Sutherland, Drummuie, Golspie KW10 6TA. Tel: 01408 635338. Placing request forms can be obtained from http://www.highland.gov.uk/learninghere/schools/informationforparents/ Transportation to and from school, for placing request pupils, is a parental responsibility. If pupils live outwith the school catchment area and their parents wish them to attend Farr High School they can contact Mrs Wood, the Head Teacher, to arrange a visit. Schools are required to keep an attendance register by law. We have a responsibility for the care and welfare of all pupils during the school day and therefore we need to know the whereabouts of absent pupils. For more serious issues the Depute Head Teacher or the Head Teacher should be contacted. Tel: 01408 635338 8 PARENTS AND CARERS AS PARTNERS / PARANTAN AGUS LUCHD CURAIM The support and involvement of Parents in their children‘s education is key to the success of young people. Taking time with them, discussing work, practising language (Gaelic, French and English) helping with homework management and encouraging responsibility are important ways of supporting children‘s learning. This partnership in our children’s education is greatly valued at Farr High School. We always welcome parents to come and meet with the Head Teacher, Depute or our Guidance Teacher, if there are questions or issues that you would like to discuss. The school will always seek to involve parents in any key decisions about their child‘s education and keep parents informed about progress. This includes: Monitoring and Tracking Interim Reports - these are issued to parents once per session Full Reports - these are issued to parents once per session Parents' Evenings - during the school session we hold four parents' evenings per year with exact dates and arrangements being sent out by letter. Options Night - an opportunity to meet with the HT, DHT and the Guidance teacher to discuss course choices. In addition to these formal Parents' Evenings, you should feel free to contact the school at any time to discuss any matters concerning your child’s progress. If possible, it is best to telephone the school first so that an appointment may be made. Pupil Profile (End of S3) Newsletters Information on the school website www.farrhighschool.org.uk Of course we will also contact you by telephone as and when necessary if we have issues or concerns to share with you. 9 PARENT FORUM AND PARENT COUNCIL / COMHAIRLE NAM PÀRANT All parents who have a child enrolled here are automatically members of the FHS Parent Forum. One of the ways Parent Forum members will be able to express their views is through the Parent Council. Parents can participate in deciding how the Parent Council operates and can expect to be consulted by the Parent Council on issues relating to school. Above all, parents should enjoy taking part in the life of the school and their children‘s education. The Parent Council is primarily a group of parents selected by the Parent Forum to represent all the parents of children at the school. The Parent Council can co-opt members from out-with the parent body and the Head Teacher also attends, advises and consults with the council.

The turbines have a maximum hub height of 80m and a maximum height to blade tip of 120m, with an individual output of between 2 – 2.5 MW. In addition a 70m anemometer mast is proposed, with up to 2.9km of access tracks. The site does not lie within any areas designated for their natural heritage interests but does lie close to the: • Caithness and Sutherland Peatlands Special Area of Conservation (SAC) • Caithness and Sutherland Peatlands Special Protection Area (SPA) • Caithness and Sutherland Peatlands RAMSAR site • Lochan Buidhe Mires Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) • Armadale Gorge Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) • Kyle of Tongue National Scenic Area (NSA) Three Community Councils have been consulted on the application. Melvich and Tongue Community Councils have not objected, but Bettyhill, Strathnaver and Altnaharra Community Council has objected. There are 46 timeous letters of representation from members of the public, with 8 non- timeous. The application has been advertised as it has been accompanied by an Environmental Statement (ES), being a development which is classified as ‘an EIA development’ as defined by the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations.

The Plan covers the area shown on the Strategy Map on page 3). CaSPlan focuses on where development should and should not occur in the Caithness and Sutherland area over the next 10-20 years. Along the north coast the Pilot Marine Spatial Plan for the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters will also influence what happens in the area. Executive Summary The development, construction and operation of Strathy North Wind Farm has generated substantial local and national impacts and will continue to do so throughout its operational lifetime and beyond. Strathy North Wind Farm, which is based in the north of Scotland, near Strathy in North Sutherland, was developed and built at a cost of £113 million (DEVEX/CAPEX). Operational expenditure (OPEX) and decommissioning costs over its 25-year lifetime are expected to be £121 million. The expected total expenditure (TOTEX) is £234 million. During the development and construction of Strathy North Wind Farm, it was estimated that companies and organisations in Scotland secured contracts worth £59.4 million. The area is expected to secure £100.6 million in OPEX contracts over the wind farm’s operational lifetime (£4.0 million annually). Overall the expenditure, including decommissioning, secured in Scotland is expected to be £165.0 million, or 73% of TOTEX. Highland is expected to secure £21.9 million in DEVEX/CAPEX contracts and £51.5 million in OPEX contracts (£2.1 million annually). Overall, Highland is expected to secure contracts worth £77.0 million, or 33% of TOTEX. Of this, £25.6 million, equivalent to 11% of TOTEX is expected to be secure in Caithness and North Sutherland.

    APPENDIX A Snow and low temperatures - December 2009 to January 2010 From Thursday 17 December 2009 to Friday 15 January 2010 the UK experienced a spell of very low temperatures and significant snowfalls which affected almost the whole country. This was the most widespread and prolonged spell of this type across the UK since December 1981/January 1982. Large areas of England, Wales and Northern Ireland regularly saw night-time temperatures falling well below freezing, and on occasion below -10 °C, while in Scotland night-time temperatures in the Highland glens regularly fell to -15 °C or lower. Daytime temperatures in many areas frequently struggled to rise above freezing, often remaining several degrees below. The freezing temperatures were accompanied by widespread snowfalls on many days throughout the period. With daytime temperatures often failing to rise above freezing, little thawing occurred so fresh snowfalls added to previous accumulations. Depths of 10 to 20 cm were widespread across England and Wales, whilst across upland areas of northern England and in the Scottish Highlands, depths exceeded 30 cm in many areas. Impacts The snowfalls and widespread freezing conditions caused very significant disruption across the UK through this period. Transport was particularly badly affected with snowfalls causing numerous road closures, and train and flight cancellations. The first snowfalls on Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 December affected mainly eastern parts of the UK, but on Sunday 20th the focus shifted to northern and western parts with Northern Ireland and the Manchester area experiencing heavy snowfalls. On Monday 21st, areas west of London were badly affected, while on Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd icy conditions caused further problems.

This ignorance and misprision arose from several causes; primarily, and at first principally, from the remoteness of the situation in days when distances were not counted by steam, and when the country, now perhaps the most accessible of any mountainous district in Europe, was, like most parts of modern Greece, traversed only by rough pony-paths over the protruding bare bones of the mountain. In Dr. Johnson’s day, to have penetrated the Argyllshire Highlands as far west as the sacred settlement of St. Columba was accounted a notable adventure scarcely less worthy of record than the perilous passage of our great Scottish traveller Bruce from the Red Sea through the great Nubian Desert to the Nile; and the account of his visit to those unknown regions remains to this day a monument of his sturdy Saxon energy, likely to be read with increasing interest by a great army of summer perambulators long after his famous dictionary shall have been forgotten, or relegated as a curiosity to the back shelves of a philological library.
