Eindhoven, enlightening tomorrow’s society

When you google innovation, it is no coincidence that the first images you will find are light bulbs. 125 years ago, brought light to the City of Eindhoven. The company transformed the city into a vibrant industrial success story, becoming a world-leader in lighting and semiconductors. But fortunes changed in the 1990s. Eindhoven was hit hard when left its centre. Yet the city has rebounded. Sharp decline and severe unemployment have gone. Eindhoven has grown into a world-renowned high tech hotspot; the beating heart of the Brainport Region.

Our heritage in light also guides our future at the dawn of the 3rd (watch Future of Light). It drives innovative clusters. It leads to breakthroughs in optics and precision engineering to benefit a smarter society. But technology can only transform lives if it interacts with its people. Working together to build trusted collaborative ecosystems, gives us a global competitive advantage. Einstein believed that imagination is more important than knowledge. We agree. Eindhoven is living proof that whole brain thinking works, integrating creativity to build the foremost high tech applications.

We have both the ambition and talent to develop the products and services to help solve the grand societal challenges. By co-creating with citizens, and combining digital technology with creativity, we enhance quality of life in our city. Collaborative Experimentation is the path to our city’s next stage of development. It is a state of mind. We believe the Vision and Roadmap Urban Lighting Eindhoven 2030, is the key to unlocking a whole series of impactful social experiments. Each shares the common goal of inspiring others to help create a smarter society. Eindhoven aspires to expand its visionary leadership in urban lighting, building the next chapter in the city’s heritage. We invite others across Europe to join us on this journey and share in our success.

From experience already gained in pilot projects, Eindhoven is now switching to commercial rollout by 2016. Its existing urban lighting system is being integrated into a new smart lighting grid, encouraging new interactive services which enhance the quality of life in public spaces: well-being, health, mobility and security. Public interest, inclusiveness and ongoing open innovation is guaranteed by creating an open access infrastructure, by open data and open services.
