    Karl Popper and Conspiracy Theories in Polish Political Thought Joanna Diane Caytas, Columbia University Abstract: Over the last century, Polish national discourse and political culture have produced an uncommonly high incidence of conspiracy theories. A similar tendency can be shown to occur among expatriates, even those one or two generations removed from the home land. Two hundred fifty years of partitions between hostile neighbors resulting in deprivation of a national identity, along with systematic oppression by the occupants’ secret police, and a tradition of uprisings and mass emigration recurring generation after generation account for some of the propensity for conspiracy theories. Karl Raimund Popper recognized conspiracy theories as psychologically anamorphous phenomena based on flawed cognitive patterns and misguided axiomatic beliefs that the more consequential an event, the less likely it is to be random or unintended. This paper examines Polish evidence of Popper’s diagnosis of a widespread aversion to attributing significant events to good or bad luck and of an assumption of an underlying intentional order. Many conspiracy theories go wrong not by mistakenly assuming intentional actors but their identity, motives, or degree of coordination. The common denominator of all conspiracy theories is a misjudgment of the forces of randomness, invisible hand mechanisms, or accidentally disproportionate consequences of relatively minor causes and/or overestimation of the possibility of maintaining control and secrecy of conspiracies in open societies. While not a universal panacea, simple interest analysis can dispel the notion of conspiracy but it can also form part of the misleading theory itself. W żaden sposób nie da się jednoznacznie rozstrzygnąć ewentualnych wątpliwości i sporów historyków, czy można rzeczywiście podjasnogórską metropolię uznać za ostatnią „wojenną stolicę”, jednak bez wątpienia zarówno fakt pobytu generała Okulickiego, jak i praktycznie całej Komendy Głównej Armii Krajowej (KG AK) w Częstochowie oraz rola i znaczenie miasta u schyłku okupacji niemieckiej, przemawiają za tym, aby ten stan rzeczy przynajmniej zaakceptować2. Generał „Niedźwiadek”, bo to chyba najbardziej znany pseudonim Okulickiego, przybył do Częstochowy prawdopodobnie 8 października 1944 roku, a opuścił miasto po wydaniu rozkazu rozwiązującego największą armię okupowanej Europy tj. 19 stycznia 1945 roku3. Okulicki i jego podkomendni opuścili Warszawę, już po kapitulacji, 3 października 1944 r., by spod Jasnej Góry kierować strukturami wojskowego podziemia oraz uczestnicząc w exodusie warszawiaków, doświadczyć losu cywili w ostatnich miesiącach wojny4. Oprócz generała swoje miejsce w Częstochowie znaleźli między innymi: szef sztabu AK – płk dypl. Janusz Bokszczanin „Sęk”, „Wir”, delegat Sił Zbrojnych w Kraju (od 13 maja 1945 r.) - płk dypl. Od kwietnia w Polsce będzie sta- cjonować również wielonarodowa batalionowa grupa bojowa podlegająca do- wództwu NATO. Szkolą się też proobronni i uczniowie klas mundurowych. Zostały sformowane pierwsze trzy brygady wojsk obrony terytorialnej – w Białymstoku, Lublinie i Rze- szowie. Trwają także rozmowy z kandydatami na terytorialsów – bazy danych w sztabach wojskowych pękają w szwach od zgłoszeń, tak duże jest zaintereso- wanie służbą w nowym rodzaju sił zbrojnych. Minister obrony narodowej Antoni Macierewicz osobiście otworzył pierwszy punkt informacyjny OT w Białymstoku, wkrótce w innych miastach powstaną kolejne. Chętni będą mogli się tam zarejestrować i uzy- skać wszelkie informacje.

    OD PIERWSZEGO USŁYSZENIA - Bożena Szara (wyemitowane 3 marca 2019 - posłuchaj) ŻOŁNIERZE WYKLĘCI, ŻOŁNIERZE NIEZŁOMNI To ci, których historia dawno wyklęła. Przed laty ich groby zalewano asfaltem by zniknęły. Jesteśmy winni im pamięd. Żołnierze wyklęci to ci, którzy po II wojnie światowej nie złożyli broni stawiając opór sowietyzacji Polski. Żołnierze Wyklęci to setki torturowanych i nieludzko maltretowanych ludzi tylko za to, że walczyli o wolną Polskę. Jednak wśród nich byli też i tacy o których wiele rodzin chciałoby zapomnied i których czyny IPN nazywa ludobójstwem. Nikomu nie wolno wszystkich oceniad jedną miarą, generalnie oskarżad lub generalnie gloryfikowad. Historia Polski nie jest prosta, z jednej strony bogata w bohaterów, a z drugiej.... są w niej karty na których zapisano czyny haniebne. - Żołnierz wyklęty to był żołnierz Armii Krajowej, tylko nie miał wyjścia i musiał dalej walczyd z komunizmem - powiedział bardzo wiekowy już, były żołnierz AK podczas rozmowy z dziennikarką stacji TVN 24. W wielu miastach w całym kraju 1 marca odbywały się spotkania, masze pamięci i apele poległych. Zorganizowano szereg oficjalnych uroczystości ku czci żołnierzy niezłomnych. - Nie pogodzili się z pół-wolnością, nie pogodzili się z zakłamaniem, nie pogodzili się z niby niepodległością i niby suwerennością - mówił o nich w piątek podczas oficjalnych uroczystości prezydent Andrzej Duda. Były prezydent - Bronisław Komorowski powiedział, że.... "pamiętad, to także rozumied i byd mądrzejszym o ich doświadczenie. Taka była idea dnia pamięci o żołnierzach powojennego podziemia zbrojnego. To, że ktoś to wypacza i zamienia w hucpę polityczną, to druga sprawa". Ta hucpa to min. organizowane od lat marsze pamięci w Hajnówce przez Młodzież Wszechpolską i gloryfikacja przez nich Romualda Rajsa - "Burego", którego IPN uznał za zbrodniarza.

Davidson’s North Carolina militia, numbering between 600 and 800 men, set up camp on the far side of the river, hoping to thwart or at least slow Cornwallis’ crossing. The Patriots stayed back from the banks of the river in order to prevent Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tartleton’s forces from fording the river at a different point and surprising the Patriots with a rear attack. At 1 a.m., Cornwallis began to move his troops toward the ford; by daybreak, they were crossing in a double-pronged formation–one prong for horses, the other for wagons. The noise of the rough crossing, during which the horses were forced to plunge in over their heads in the storm-swollen stream, woke the sleeping Patriot guard. The Patriots fired upon the Britons as they crossed and received heavy fire in return. Almost immediately upon his arrival at the river bank, General Davidson took a rifle ball to the heart and fell from his horse; his soaked corpse was found late that evening. Although Cornwallis’ troops took heavy casualties, the combat did little to slow their progress north toward Virginia.
