Maker in Residence project update

September saw the completion of our Maker-in-Residence project, with Portland artist, Michael McGovern. Over the course of three weeks in July, Michael worked in the Library’s teen wing, The Athenaeum, with young artists from The Dalles to create a collaborative wood cut print, led by the teenage artists. The teens each contributed drawn elements to the final project; and the entire group worked together to carve a huge wood block print that measured 8’x4’. In the end, library patrons were invited to travel on their own to a professional print studio, where the relief block was print- ed on an antique printing press. After completion of the art, the work traveled to the Bend Art Center where it has been shown, alongside other relief prints, for the month of September. Michael was a joy to have in our space working with com- munity members; and he hopes to return to town for a short exhibition of the print in our meeting room in the coming months. So stay tuned if you want to see this work in person, it’s really something special!
