Populationsizes of winteringwaders are estimatedfor Moroccobased on mid-wintercounts during 1991- 95. For somespecies, these are comparedwith datafor 1983-87 to indicatetrends. Comparisons made with total biogeographicpopulations show that a high proportionof severalwinter in Morocco. Analysisof datafor individualsites using Ramsar criteria identified seven internationally important sites andfour otherwetlands as potential Ramsar sites. Application of nationalcriteria showed 41 sitesas nation- ally importantfor waders.These criteria were alsoused to identify a networkof key sitesfor the winter moni- toringof waders,classified in threepriority levels.
