Zur Einführung 1.1 Begriffsdefinition ‘Erotik’ und ‘Obszönität’ An den Anfang dieser Arbeit möchte ich eine genauere Definition der beiden im Titel genannten Begriffe ‘Erotik’ und ‘Obszönität’ stellen. Das Wort Erotik geht auf das griechische érōs, éros ‘Liebe’ zurück.1 Laut Duden bezeichnet es a) den geistig seelischen Bereich mit einbeziehende sinnliche Liebe, Liebes -, Geschlechtsleben; b) Sexualität.2 Das Adjektiv erotisch ist in der deutschen Sprache ein Lehnwort aus dem französischen érotique das seinerseits aus griechisch erōtikós ‘zur Liebe gehörig’ entlehnt ist.3 Nach Duden bedeutet es: a) die Liebe in ihrer [ästhetisch-] sinnlichen Anziehungskraft betreffend; b) sexuell.4 Das Wort Obszönität ist ein Abstraktum zum Adjektiv obszön, einer Entlehnung aus dem lateinischen obscoenus, obscēnus, das von lateinisch cēnum, caenum ‘Schmutz, Unflat’ abstammt.5 Laut Duden hat obszön folgende Bedeutungen: 1) in das Schamgefühl verletzender Weise auf den Sexual- /Fäkalbereich bezogen; unanständig; schlüpfrig; 2) [moralisch – sittliche] Entrüstung hervorrufend.6 Die beiden Begriffe bilden also gewissermaßen Gegensätze zueinander, indem die Erotik in erster Linie die anregende Sinnlichkeit, die Obszönität, als negativer Begriff, vor allem das Anstößige bezeichnet, das nicht den Normen einer gesellschaftlichen Moralvorstellung oder eines Verhaltenskodexes entspricht. Jede Gesellschaft und innerhalb dieser jede Gesellschaftsschicht hat unterschiedliche Verhaltensnormen, die schlussendlich jedoch bis zu einem gewissen Grad von jeder Person individuell ausgelegt werden. Was ich als obszön und somit abstoßend empfinde, kann auf jemand anderen durchaus sexuell anregend wirken, und umgekehrt kann jemand etwas als obszön empfinden, das ich in keiner Weise als unanständig empfinde. Die Problematik, die sich also beim Versuch ergibt, diese Begriffe auf die Literatur einer Zeit anzuwenden, die über ein halbes Jahrtausend zurückliegt, liegt klar auf der Hand und soll hier nicht seitenlang erörtert werden. The increased emphasis on the aesthetics of language and the deliberate use of features such as repetition, meter and rhyme, are what are commonly used to distinguish poetry from prose, but debates over such distinctions still persist, while the issue is confounded by such forms as prose poetry and poetic prose. Some modernists (such as the Surrealists) approach this problem of definition by defining poetry not as a literary genre within a set of genres, but as the very manifestation of human imagination, the substance which all creative acts derive from. Poetry often uses condensed form to convey an emotion or idea to the reader or listener, as well as using devices such as assonance, alliteration and repetition to achieve musical or incantatory effects. Furthermore, poems often make heavy use of imagery, word association, and musical qualities. Because of its reliance on "accidental" features of language and connotational meaning, poetry is notoriously difficult to translate. Similarly, poetry's use of nuance and symbolism can make it difficult to interpret a poem or can leave a poem open to multiple interpretations. It is difficult to define poetry definitively, especially when one considers that poetry encompasses forms as different as epic narratives and haiku.

Thomas: Poetic Horizons Karolina Alicja Trapp Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2014 The School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper Abstract This thesis engages with the poetry of R.S. Thomas. Surprisingly enough, although acclaim for Thomas as a major figure on the twentieth century’s literary scene has been growing perceptibly, academic scholarship has not as yet produced a full-scale study devoted specifically to the poetic character of Thomas’s writings. This thesis aims to fill that gap. Instead of mining the poetry for psychological, social, or political insights into Thomas himself, I take the verse itself as the main object of investigation. My concern is with the poetic text as an artefact. The main assumption here is that a literary work conveys its meaning not only via particular words and sentences, governed by the grammar of a given language, but also through additional artistic patterning. Creating a new set of multi-sided relations within the text, this “supercode” leads to semantic enrichment. Accordingly, my goal is to scrutinize a given poem’s artistic organization by analysing its component elements as they come together and function in a whole text. Interpretations of particular poems form the basis for conclusions about Thomas’s poetics more generally. Strategies governing his poetic expression are explored in relation to four types of experience which are prominent in his verse: the experience of faith, of the natural world, of another human being, and of art.

    The Principles of the Edited Texts Dafydd Johnston The edited texts are composite ones which draw on the evidence of all the manuscripts in order to recreate as closely as possible the poems as composed by the poet. They are presented in modern orthography, with punctuation and paragraphing reflecting editorial interpretation, and titles have also been provided by the editors. This essay will discuss the theoretical questions and practical problems which this methodology raises. Composite texts were deemed to be the most appropriate editorial method for the poems of Dafydd ap Gwilym because of the nature of their transmission. In cases where a poem has been preserved in a single version the text is based on the earliest surviving manuscript, adapted only where necessary, as explained below. But most of the poems survive in more than one version, with substantial differences between them. Some of these differences can be explained as changes made by scribes during the copying process, but there is reason to believe that much of the variance derives from oral transmission (that is learning a poem by heart and transmitting it by word of mouth). Although the oral performances were essentially ephemeral, we can be quite certain that that was how most of the cywyddau, and also apparently some of the awdlau and englynion, were transmitted by the poet to the first reciters, and by them in turn to their successors for some period before being preserved in writing. The evidence for oral tradition is set out in the section on the manuscripts. Some at least of the different manuscript versions of the poems are the product of oral transmission, as shown by variations in number and order of lines as well as in readings.

American dictionaries, after all, have always assigned their technical terms to professional experts in specific fields, identified those experts in print, and in effect held them responsible for the accuracy and comprehensiveness of each entry. Even more important, the entries themselves offer learners a complete sketch of each target word (headword). Memorization. For professionals, memorization is a basic career requirement. Any physician will tell you how much of it is called for in medical school and how hard it is, thanks to thousands of strange, exotic shapes like <myocardium> that have to be taken apart in the mind and reassembled like pieces of an unpronounceable jigsaw puzzle.

It examines these texts in two parts: first, the development of attitudes towards poetry in treatises about poetry from Wales and France, and, second, the development of poetics of sound in the poetry itself. I begin my dissertation looking at the Welsh grammar from the fourteenth century, and I argue that, in their attention to syllables and diphthongs, poetic faults, and rhyme, they betray an implicit interest in the building blocks of sound that go into making poetry.
