Ceramics in Portuguese Architecture (16Th-20Th Centuries)
CASTELLÓN (SPAIN) CERAMICS IN PORTUGUESE ARCHITECTURE (16TH-20TH CENTURIES) A. M. Portela, F. Queiroz Art Historians - Portugal [email protected] ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to present a synoptic view of the evolution of Portuguese architectural ceramics, particularly focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries, because the origins of current uses of ceramic tiles in Portuguese architecture stem from those periods. Thus, the paper begins with the background to the use of ceramics in Portuguese architecture, between the 16th and 18th centuries, through some duly illustrated paradigmatic examples. The study then presents examples of the 19th century, in a period of transition between art and industry, demonstrating the diversity and excellence of Portuguese production, as well as the identifying character of the phenomenon of façade tiling in the Portuguese urban image. The study concludes with a section on the causes of the decline in the use of ceramic materials in Portuguese architecture in the first decades of the 20th century, and the appropriation of ceramic tiling by the popular classes in their vernacular architecture. Parallel to this, the paper shows how the most erudite route for ceramic tilings lay in author works, often in public buildings and at the service of the nationalistic propaganda of the dictatorial regime. This section also explains how an industrial upgrading occurred that led to the closing of many of the most important Portuguese industrial units of ceramic products for architecture, foreshadowing the current ceramic tiling scenario in Portugal. 1 CASTELLÓN (SPAIN) 1. Art Nouveau and Politics in the Dawn of Globalisation Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, a portuguese Art Nouveau artist Rita Nobre Peralta, Leonor da Costa Pereira Loureiro, Alice Nogueira Alves Abstract The Art Nouveau gradual appearance in the Portuguese context it’s marked by the multidimensional artist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, and by his audacious affirmation as an avant- garde figure focused upon the industrial modernity, that is able to highlight some of the most original artistic solutions of his time. He manages to include in his production a touch of Portuguese Identity alongside with the new European trends of the late 19th century, combining traditional production techniques, themes and typologies, which are extended to artistic areas as varied as the press, the decorative arts and the decoration of cultural events. In this article, we pretend to analyse some of his proposals within Lisbon's civil architecture interior design and his participation in the Columbian Exhibition, held in Madrid in 1892, where he was a member of the Portuguese Legation, co-responsible for the selection and composition of the exhibition contents. HISTORICAL PROFILES / Serbia Battle for the country (1804–33) The period between 1804 and 1815 is marked by two major uprisings in Serbia and the beginning of the Serb’s fight for liberation from Turkish occupation, and abolition of feudalism. The leader of the first Serbian uprising was #or#e Petrovi#, progenitor of the Kara#or#evi# Dynasty, while the leader of the second Serbian uprising was Miloš Obrenovi#. Portrait of Karadjordje Petrovic 1841 The Vassal state (1833–78) In 1833, Serbia gained autonomy within the Ottoman Empire, thus becoming a vassal, i.e. a tributary principality with a hereditary ruler. The first prince was Miloš Obrenovi#, and the capital of the Principality of Serbia was in Kragujevac. By a Hatišerif (Turkish edict), from 1833, Serbia gained freedom of religion and the possibility that Serbs, instead of Greeks up until then, could be elected Metropolitan or Patriarch in Belgrade. In 1835, Serbia gained its first Constitution. In 1842, Kara#or#e’s son, Prince Aleksandar Kara#or#evi#, came to power, which marked the beginning of the rule of the Kara#or#evi# Dynasty. At that time, the capital was moved to Belgrade. In 1848, Serbs raised a revolution in the part of the Austrian Empire populated by Serbs, and proclaimed the autonomous region Srpsko Vojvodstvo (the Serbian Duchy). In 1859, the Obrenovi# Dynasty regained power. The period between 1876 and 1878 was marked by wars against Turkey. He is sometimes considered the father of Slovenian national Romantic music. He also composed the Serbian national anthem, 'Bože pravde' ('God of Justice') and the former Slovenian national anthem 'Naprej zastava Slave' ('Forward, Flag of Glory!'). In 1862, he moved to the town of Pančevo in southern Vojvodina, where he worked as the choirmaster of the local Serbian Orthodox church. He later moved to Belgrade on the other side of the Austrian-Serbian border. There he worked as a composer in the Serbian National Theatre. GEORGE ZONGOLOPOULOS George Zongolopoulos (Athens, 1903-2004) was one of the most important Greek artists and representatives of the so called “Generation of 1930s” with diverse and internationally recognized work. The work of the artist, who was often called the “eternal teenager”, extends across the unusual vector of time of almost eight decades, and its rich range of subject matter is characterized by incessant renewal. Biography George Zongolopoulos was born on March 1st, 1903, in Deligiorgi Street in the center of Athens, while his place of origin was the village Manna or Markasi in Corinth (as Zongolopoulos narrated to his family the real year of his birth was 1901 and not 1903 as is appeared in all his official documents). He grew up in a family of lawyers that did not encourage him to deal professionally with art, although he showed a special inclination towards painting and drawing from childhood. He served his military service as a sergeant until 1923 and during that period he met his peer and later important Greek architect Patroklos Karantinos, who became one of his closest friends and colleagues. First years of apprenticeship o National Technical University of Athens, Athens School of Fine Arts (1924-1930) In 1924 he entered the Athens School of Fine Arts and studied sculpture under Academician Thomas Thomopoulos. In his student years he expressed with militancy his opinion on the need for modernization and reorganization of teaching, and also on the need to increase the School‟s budget. His attitude towards the academicism of the School and his participation in the “occupation” of the School by its students in 1929 meant for the young Zongolopoulos expulsion from the School for a year. -
