We have been participating in conferences by Common Ground Research Networks since 2012, and we have found that they always provide, through the gathering of different perspectives, experiences, knowledge, methodologies, and cultural origins, a place for the development of research and the sharing of ideas. This conference aims to follow and expand the core values of Common Ground: more specifically, knowledge sharing, dialogue, and interdisciplinarity aimed at creating a space of intellectual interaction and imagination for the future in society. This is also the reason why we proposed the theme, “Art as Communication: The Impact of Art as a Catalyst for Social Change,” as the Special Focus for the conference. From our perspective, art, in its diverse forms, constitutes a distinctive means of communication, capable of generating dialogues in formal, informal, and culturally plural contexts within society. Art opens windows to understanding social interactions as it provides historical records of social evolution. With this special focus, we aim to create an enriched discussion about art and its reflection and impacts within contemporary social contexts, and about how art can prompt us to consider questions of identity (human, natural, and material). The scope on “social change” by art is determined to exceed its primary goal of reflection, mainly through new expressions in culture and identity. Bringing the “social” to discussion and reflection in this context emphasizes its importance and relevance within communities where it would be possible to research and develop active, collaborative, and participative approaches. At this conference, we are privileged to host five of the most relevant scholars and specialists in the field as plenary speakers: Cristina Pratas Cruzeiro, PostDoc Researcher at FCT, Integrated Researcher, Institute of Art History, Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, New University of Lisbon, Portugal; Delfim Sardo, Professor, University of Coimbra, Portugal; Hugo Martinez de Seabra, Project Manager, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Social Cohesion and Integration Program, Lisbon, Portugal; Makeba Lewis, International Academic, Chelsea, Camberwell, and Wimbledon College of Arts, University of the Arts London, UK; and Susana Gomes da Silva, Education Officer, Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon, Portugal. We would very much like to thank them for honoring us with their presence and participation. It was inspired by the loom in northern France where the ancient machine has played a significant role in the region’s boom and prosperity. Dentre as considerações teóricas pertinentes à Sociologia da Arte, discute-se sua abrangência tendo como objeto de estudo as instituições no campo da arte. Empiricamente, o foco é a pesquisa de gênero, ou seja, a transmissão da produção feminina nas artes visuais comparando três espaços de legitimação: o Museu Oscar Niemeyer (MON), as pastas [arte br] produzidas pelo Instituto Arte na Escola pólo UNICENTRO/PR e o Livro Didático de Arte adotado pelo Estado do Paraná para o Ensino Médio. ABSTRACT: The different functions assigned to museums along their history as institutions of knowledge, culture and leisure are discussed in this article. Among the theoretical considerations relevant to the Sociology of Art, the scope of the museum is discussed, having as an object of study the institutions in the field of art. Empirically, the focus is on gender research, that is, the transmission of works produced by women in the visual arts as three legitimating spaces are compared: the Oscar Niemeyer Museum (ONM), the materials [art br] produced by the Institute Art in School UNICENTRO/PR pole and the Art Textbook published by the state of Paraná for middle school. I have outlined three models of depiction in the evolution of the fictional artist character: the maudlin artist of early popular literature, the clownish and suspicious artist of the screen and the ironically distanced artist of late twentieth century film and television. In the course of this study I argue that all configurations of the artist in these examples of popular fiction are constructs (positively or negatively) informed by standard patterns of representation. I term this construction the fictional generic artist. I locate this study in notions of the artist in the media, a relatively recent and largely unexplored field of inquiry, in addition to the expansive art historical and theoretical discourse on the myth of the artist, an oft chartered territory that art history has largely left barren in the wake of unprecedented demystification in the 1960s.

I started this study because I noticed that these ambiguous, yet widely- discussed terms were hardly acknowledged in art education. This thesis provides a conceptual framework for postinternet, PIA, and (the) (the) NA through a critical review of the literature. Postinternet and (the) NA are notions and phenomena that signpost an era and a condition of unprecedented pace of computation-driven transformations in the human culture. They continue the list of theoretical neologisms indicating the changes brought about by the post-conditions. This thesis establishes that postinternet, PIA, and (the) NA are characterized through their paradoxical relation to time and temporality at conceptual and thematical levels. Obsessed with novelty, these terms attempt to break off from their “previous,” while, starting from their titles, simultaneously anchoring themselves to the past. Postinternet is a notion that describes the inescapable consequences of the intermixing of the online and offline, the omnipresence of the internet.

Due to its recent emergence and disparity from the Western art market, it remains an indispensable yet unfamiliar subject for the art world. This study penetrates through the thriving scene of the Chinese art market, fills part of the gap by presenting an in-depth analysis of its market structure, and depicts the route of development during 2006-2011, the booming period of the Chinese art market. As one of the most important and largest emerging art markets, what are the key trends in the Chinese art market from 2006 to 2011? This question serves as the main research question that guides throughout the research. To answer this question, research at three levels is unfolded, with regards to the functioning of the Chinese art market, the geographical shift from west to east, and the market performance of contemporary Chinese art. As the most vibrant art category, Contemporary Chinese art is chosen as the focal art sector in the empirical part since its transaction cover both the Western and Eastern art market and it really took off at secondary art market since 2005, in line with the booming period of the Chinese art market.

    Art Post Internet A Critical Analysis of Art in the Post- Internet Era Mark Gens Te ability of technology to transform art, artist, and art world is not a new concept. Te impact of digital technology and the Internet is yet another dynamic force. What is taking place is a redefnition of authorship, collaboration, and materiality as well as a need for new theoretical and aesthetic notions of how – and where – art is made, viewed, marketed and collected. Tese factors, the ever-expanding World Wide Web, and the pervasive individual ownership of networked devices by most of the privileged world, have ushered in what some refer to as the Post-Internet era. Rather than focusing on the validity of the highly-debated term “Post-Internet” this paper will focus on the developmental shift to which the term refers. Tis shift is an important marker in the movement of ideas and criticality, culture, and context. It is necessary to consider the digital art predecessors to the Post-Internet era. However, the exhibition Art Post-Internet, held at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, China in the spring of 2014, is vital for its well-articulated curatorial perspective. Although the signifcance of the Post-Internet era is still being determined and defned at this moment, Art Post-Internet has made great strides in solidifying its look, methods, context and meaning.
