• Norwegian Anorthosites and Their Industrial Uses, with Emphasis on the Massifs of the Inner Sogn-Voss Area in Western Norway
NGU-BULL 436, 2000 - PAGE 103 Norwegian anorthosites and their industrial uses, with emphasis on the massifs of the Inner Sogn-Voss area in western Norway JAN EGIL WANVIK Wanvik, J.E. 2000: Norwegian anorthosites and their industrial uses, with emphasis on the massifs of the Inner Sogn- Voss area in western Norway. Norges geologiske undersøkelse Bulletin 436, 103-112. Anorthositic rocks are common in several geological provinces in Norway. Many occur at scattered localities in different parts of the country, but the two largest anorthosite complexes in western Europe are situated in western Norway. These two Precambrian massifs, the Inner Sogn-Voss province (~ 1700 Ma), and the Rogaland province (~ 930 Ma) have been investigated for use as a raw material for various industrial applications. Anorthosite with a high anorthite content (An >70) is easily soluble in mineral acids, and the bytownite plagioclase of the Sogn anorthosite makes it well suited for industrial processes based on acid leaching. The high aluminium content, ca. 31% Al2O3, has made these occurrences interesting for various industrial applications, especially as an alternative raw material for the Norwegian aluminium industry. With this goal in mind, geological investigations and processing studies have been carried out at various times during the past century. At present, a refined process utilising both the silicon and the calcium contents of the anorthosite has renewed industrial interest in these acid soluble anorthosites. The Family and Ancestors of Nils Gjermundson Skaar and Christi Olesdatter Melstvedt Compiled and translated by Joanne Murray Seymour 1994 Most of this information was translated from the A.ttarbok for Kvam. Volume I, Vikey Sofai & fotarbok for Kvam. Volume II. Oystese Sokn gathered and written by L.H.Torpe in cooperation with a township committee: Mikjell T. Steine, Simon J. Fonneland &Jon O. Tjosas Ist edition published 1958 2nd edition 1980 Introduction I have tried to get information on the relatives and ancestors of my grandfather, Johannes Qohn) Nilsson Skaar gathered together in one booklet. Because he died while I was very young I have had to ask many people about him and his brothers and sisters. The information about his ancestors I have translated from the yfcttarbok for Kvam, Volumes I &c II. These were written by a committee appointed by the "heradstyre" or community council of Kvam, Norway, which is on the Hardanger fjord. Volume I is for the Vikoy parish and Volume II is for 0ystese parish. These are neighboring parishes in the kommune (community) of Kvam. They shared pastors and many aspects of government. I have used the "ahnetafel" numbering system here. These are shown in the postscript numbers after the names. I have puposely left out #1 because it could be used for any of the children of Nils and Christi Skaar. #2 & 3 are for their parents, Nils and Christi, and #4, 5, 6, & 7 are for grandparents, etc. This way a person's father's number is always twice that of the child, and the mother's number is twice plus 1.

  • The Blackhouse and Røykstova; a Common North Sea Tradition
THE THIRD HERMANN PÁLSSON LECTURE (2007) The Blackhouse and Røykstova; a common North Sea tradition Ole Didrik Laerum DWELLING houses with an open fireplace represent a common European tradition which goes back to the Neolithic period. They were simple rooms, open to the raftered roof and had no chimney. The smoke from the fireplace found its way out either through a hole in the ceiling or in the gable, or directly through the thatch in the roof. Because smoke was trapped under the ceiling, the houses could not have an upper floor. The open fireplace, the hearth, provided both light and heating, and in addition, pots and kettles were hung over the fire for cooking. The early houses did not have a window. Instead, the light came from above and spread into the room through the hole in the ceiling, the louvre (Old Norse: Liora). Thereby, the dim light from above and from the open fire created a very special atmosphere which was accentuated by the smoke passing up and out. These houses are witnesses of common life throughout an ancient history, and represent an environment which was totally different from life today. For most people in our modern society, such houses might seem primitive, uncomfortable and dirty, where draught and smoke presented serious health hazards. Although this might be partly true, blackhouses can not only teach us about life in older times, but also enlighten us about values which have almost become lost in the present day. My own background is in medicine and basic biological research, with a strong interest in medical and cultural history.
