Elly's Notes on a Trip to Norway and Sweden in May 2013
Elly’s notes on a trip to Norway and Sweden in May 2013 I was fortunate to be invited to be an opponent for a PhD defense in Trondheim, Norway. Reading the dissertation made me think a lot more about some linguistic issues but the trip was also a wonderful opportunity to see where friends had moved to and to connect with linguists I had known before in both Trondheim and Oslo. Trondheim is a beautiful city with lots of old warehouses. I had been there many, many years ago and remembered the warehouses in the evening light. The city is situated along a fjord with interesting modern art museums and an old cathedral. Had lovely meals at the Mikrobryggeri, Baklandet Skydsstation, and Havfruen. Gamle Bybru Håkon Gullvåg collection at the hotel Had a great walk with a friend along the fjord on Saturday morning with gorgeous weather! See below! Fjord in Trondheim Remnants of WW II After being in Trondheim and Oslo, it was great to visit a Norwegian linguist/friend in Eidsvoll, a little north of Oslo’s airport Gardermoen. After that visit on Sunday, I drove south to Sweden because I had always wanted to see the rock carvings (hällristningar) around Tanumshede in Bohuslän. The Vitlyckehällen include many ships, people, footsteps (of gods), cupmarks, and the wedding couple. Many possible images are absent, e.g. children, houses, and fish. The images of boats have been argued to go back to pre‐Indo European times. Above the rock carvings at Vitlycke, there are two cairns (röstenar in Swedish). -
The Viking Age
Laval University From the SelectedWorks of Fathi Habashi March, 2020 The iV king Age Fathi Habashi Available at: https://works.bepress.com/fathi_habashi/615/ The Viking Age INTRODUCTION The Viking Age (793-1066) is a period in history during which the Scandinavians expanded and built settlements throughout Europe. They are sometimes referred to as Norsemen and known to the Greek as Varangians. They took two routes: the East - - the present-day Ukraine and Russia, and the West mainly in the present-day Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, Normandy, Italy, and the British Isles. The Viking were competent sailors, adept in land warfare as well as at sea. Their ships were light enough to be carried over land from one river system to another. Viking ships The motivation of the Viking to invade East and West is a problem to historians. Many theories were given none was the answer. For example, retaliation against forced conversion to Christianity by Charlemagne by killing any who refused to become baptized, seeking centers of wealth, kidnapping slaves, and a decline in the profitability of old trade routes. Viking ship in Oslo Museum The Vikings raids in the East and the West of Europe VIKINGS IN THE EAST The Dnieber The Vikings of Scandinavia came by way of the Gulf of Finland and sailed up the Dvina River as far as they could go, and then carried their ships across land to the Dnieper River, which flows south to the Black Sea. They raided villages then they became interested in trading with the Slavs. Using the Dnieper, they carried shiploads of furs, honey, and wax south to markets on the Black Sea, or sailed across that sea trade in Constantinople. -

How Uniform Was the Old Norse Religion?
II. Old Norse Myth and Society HOW UNIFORM WAS THE OLD NORSE RELIGION? Stefan Brink ne often gets the impression from handbooks on Old Norse culture and religion that the pagan religion that was supposed to have been in Oexistence all over pre-Christian Scandinavia and Iceland was rather homogeneous. Due to the lack of written sources, it becomes difficult to say whether the ‘religion’ — or rather mythology, eschatology, and cult practice, which medieval sources refer to as forn siðr (‘ancient custom’) — changed over time. For obvious reasons, it is very difficult to identify a ‘pure’ Old Norse religion, uncorroded by Christianity since Scandinavia did not exist in a cultural vacuum.1 What we read in the handbooks is based almost entirely on Snorri Sturluson’s representation and interpretation in his Edda of the pre-Christian religion of Iceland, together with the ambiguous mythical and eschatological world we find represented in the Poetic Edda and in the filtered form Saxo Grammaticus presents in his Gesta Danorum. This stance is more or less presented without reflection in early scholarship, but the bias of the foundation is more readily acknowledged in more recent works.2 In the textual sources we find a considerable pantheon of gods and goddesses — Þórr, Óðinn, Freyr, Baldr, Loki, Njo3rðr, Týr, Heimdallr, Ullr, Bragi, Freyja, Frigg, Gefjon, Iðunn, et cetera — and euhemerized stories of how the gods acted and were characterized as individuals and as a collective. Since the sources are Old Icelandic (Saxo’s work appears to have been built on the same sources) one might assume that this religious world was purely Old 1 See the discussion in Gro Steinsland, Norrøn religion: Myter, riter, samfunn (Oslo: Pax, 2005). -
