THE THORNY ROSE: THE AVOIDANCE OF PASSION IN MODERN INDONESIAN LITERATURE1 Harry Aveling One of the important shortcomings of modern Indonesian literature is the failure of its authors, on the whole young, well-educated men of the upper and more modernized strata of society, to deal in a convincing manner with the topic of adult heterosexual passion. This problem includes, and partly arises from, an inadequacy in portraying realistic female char acters which verges, at times, on something which might be considered sadism. What is involved here is not merely an inability to come to terms with Western concepts of romantic love, as explicated, for example, by the late C. S. Lewis in his book The Allegory of Love. The failure to depict adult heterosexual passion on the part of modern Indonesian authors also stands in strange contrast to the frankness and gusto with which the writers of the various branches of traditional Indonesian and Malay litera ture dealt with this topic. Indeed it stands in almost as great a contrast with the practice of Peninsular Malay literature today. In Javanese literature, as Pigeaud notes in his history, The Literature of Java, "Poems and tales describing erotic situations are very much in evidence . descriptions of this kind are to be found in almost every important mythic, epic, historical and romantic Javanese text."^ In Sundanese literature, there is not only the open violence of Sang Kuriang's incestuous desires towards his mother (who conceived him through inter course with a dog), and a further wide range of openly sexual, indeed often heavily Oedipal stories, but also the crude direct ness of the trickster Si-Kabajan tales, which so embarrassed one commentator, Dr.

  • Paper the Idea of Ethnicity in Indonesia
Paper The idea of ethnicity in Indonesia by Zane Goebel© (La Trobe University / Tilburg University) [email protected] © September 2013 1 THE IDEA OF ETHNICITY IN INDONESIA Zane Goebel, La Trobe University/Tilburg University Abstract Ethnicity is now a ubiquitous social category in Indonesia which typically points to a community living in a particular region of Indonesia who speaks a particular language. Even so, this was not always the case. In this paper I look at the genesis and circulation of the idea of ethnicity from early colonial times until the late 2000s and how it has become intimately linked with language. In doing so, I take inspiration from scholarship in the broad area of language ideologies coming from linguistic anthropology. I will be especially concerned with describing how schooling and bureaucratic practices and policies, political discourses, mass media and nation building activities have contributed to the linking of region, linguistic form, and person to form the idea of ethnicity. Keywords: Ethnicity; Indonesia; Language 1 Introduction With some 17000 islands, all of the world’s major religions, around 1000 communities with over 400 languages, and a large portion of the world’s biodiversity, the archipelago nation of Indonesia is often talked about as one of the world’s most diverse nations. Even so, this diversity has been ordered through the social category of ethnicity. Ethnicity is now a ubiquitous social category, which either points to Chineseness (e.g. Coppel, 1983; Purdey, 2006) or more commonly a community living in a particular region of Indonesia who speak a particular regional language (bahasa daerah).

  • Outcaste by Choice: Re-Genderings in a Short Story by Oka Rusmini
OUTCASTE BY CHOICE: RE-GENDERINGS IN A SHORT STORY BY OKA RUSMINI HARRY AVELING da Ayu Oka Rusmini is a major contemporary Indonesian author. She Ihas published two novels—Tarian Bumi (2000)1 and Kenanga (2003); a collection of short stories, Sagra (2001)2; and a volume of poetry, Patiwangi (2003, republished in 2007 as Warna Kita with the omission of some 12 poems). Born in Jakarta in 1967 of Balinese parents, she was a member of the highest Balinese caste, the brahmana caste,3 but renounced this status, including her title, after her marriage to the East Javanese essayist and poet Arif B. Prasetyo. Oka Rusmini is a graduate of the Indonesian Studies Department, Udayana University, and lives in Den Pasar where she works as a journalist for the Bali Post. Most of Oka Rusmini’s prose works explore the constraints which the socio-religious practices of caste place on all members of society, but most especially on women. Both of her novels tell of a woman’s abandonment of her brahmin caste status as the result of her marriage to a sudra. The title of the poetry book, Patiwangi, refers to the ritual practice by which this degradation is confirmed, and the poem which gives the book its title bears the footnote: “Patiwangi: pati = death; wangi = fragrant. Patiwangi is a ritual which is performed on a noble woman in her Village Temple to remove her noble status as a consequence of having married a man of a lower caste. The ritual often has a serious psychological impact on noble women” (107).

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH VOLUME 8, ISSUE 12, DECEMBER 2019 ISSN 2277-8616 Multicultural Values In The Indonesian Novel Of Minangkabau’s Local Culture Pre The War Amar Salahuddin, Hasanuddin, WS, Harris Effendi Thahar, Yasnur Asri Abstract: This research is motivated by the view of the lack of public awareness of multicultural life in the nation and state.
