During your stay, you can choose from 4 different bicycle routes. It’s up to you to decide where you want to go. If you want to cycle all routes, you can opt to stay an extra night. If you want to cycle on the arrival and / or departure day, please request extra days of bicycle rental through the remarks field in the booking form. Day to Day Day 1 Arrival Muiderberg Free parking at the hotel (no reservation required). If you plan to arrive by public transport, you should be aware that the town of Muiderberg doesn’t have a train station. There’s a bus service for the last 30 minutes of your journey. Day 2 Oostvaardersplassen / Marken 74 km Oostvaardersplassen wetland is nature at its purest, a rare thing in this country. It developed all by itself when it was left alone by man after Flevo Polder was reclaimed from the sea in 1968. Although, it is relatively young for a reserve, it is undoubtedly unique, precious and beautiful. With a surface area of 6000 hectares it is the largest wetland in the country. The rough grasslands are grazed by hundreds of Konik ponies, roe deer and Heck cattle. Marken (74 km) Follow the IJsselmeer past Muiden castle and the beautiful dyke villages of Durgerdam and Uitdam to the former Zuiderzee island of Marken. Marken is known for its green wooden houses and traditional costumes. The way back leads through Waterland, a sparsely populated area with many ditches interspersed with meadows. Enjoy the tranquility and views. If the distance to Marken is too far, you can shorten the route at various places, for example in the summermonths by using the ferry at the isolated village of Holysloot. Day 3 Loosdrechtse Plassen 55 km The landscape between the cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht is wet, typically Dutch, and dotted with picturesque villages. Experience the wide-open countryside and wonderful lake vistas. The emptiness of the space around you - sometimes reaching to the horizon – and the huge skies above, give one a joyous feeling of freedom. Along the banks of meandering River Vecht you will reach the village of Weesp, a place you won’t want to miss. Cycling from Muiderberg - 5 dagen Day 4 't Gooi 62 km Set off for Naarden, one of the best-preserved fortified towns in Europe. Proceed to the polder: Arkemheen-Eemland. You’ll be amazed by the extreme openness of this unique landscape characterized by peat meadows. Further on, heather fields at the wood’s edge make for a kind of bocage landscape that is quite captivating. How wonderful to be able to cycle back to your hotel in these natural surroundings. Societies, too, must retain the ability to discriminate, to reject as well as to accept, to value some things above others, and to insist 6 on the acceptance of those values by all their members. [...] If we are to build a plural society on the foundation of what unites us, we must face up to what divides. But the questions of core freedoms and primary loyalties can’t be ducked. No society, no matter how tolerant, can expect to thrive if its citizens don’t prize what their citizenship means – if, when asked what they stand for as Frenchmen, as Indians, as Britons, they cannot give clear replies.

  • Johannes Vermeer and His Neighbours
Johannes Vermeer and his neighbours By H.G.Slager This paper is for academic purposes only (public domain) H.G. Slager, independent researcher Ommen, The Netherlands, october 2017 Cover image: detail of Vermeer’s Woman in blue reading a letter, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam General summary A reconstruction of Johannes Vermeer’s predominantly catholic neighbourhoud was possible by aligning several 17th century house registers and verification via individual archival records like sales deeds. Information in the (Delft) archives on catholics is hampered by the illegality and secrecy of the religion at the time; events may have taken place without a lawyer, notary, Orphan chamber or other official. Such information is prone to loss or at best has survived but dispersed. New information on Vermeer and/or his neighbours may have to come from other places like church archives, private archives or public archives outside Delft as has been the (limited) experience in this study. The reconstruction provides a detailed picture of the house- and owner situation in the 17th century in the so- called Papist corner where Vermeer had lived and died. Reanalyzing old and new data it is concluded Vermeer’s residence from 1663 (or earlier) until 1675 could be different than concluded in the past. The corner house on the other side of the Molenpoort alley has an equal chance to have been Vermeer’s residence. Many houses in the Papist corner harbouring the Jesuit statie (station or mission) were bought by rich catholics as the Jesuits were unable to legally buy property for themselves. Several of these sponsors resided elsewhere and likely only stayed in Delft on occasion.

  • Gift Exchange in Seventeenth-Century Holland
Solidarity and Identity Irma Thoen Solidarity and Identity Irma Thoen is a cultural historian who received her doctorate from Solidarity and Identity the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. Strategic Affection? Strategic ‘The first gift is the womb of the second’, notes Johan de Brune, the author of a seventeenth-century Dutch emblem book. This quote re- flects the notion that, contrary to modern day people, seventeenth- century individuals did not feel uneasy about stressing the reciprocal character of their gift exchanges. We perceive ‘them’ as selfish beings who only exchange gifts for personal gain, while ‘we’ only give gifts altruistically and from the kindness of our hearts. Is this a fair assump- tion? And what does this assumption reveal about us? In Strategic Affection? Irma Thoen uses gift exchange practices as a way to analyse the nature of early-modern social relations. The prac- tices of exchange, the meanings of gifts and the cultural conventions that inform the exchange of gifts in seventeenth-century Holland are discussed and compared to the social practice of gift exchange in Holland today. Thoen’s analysis makes the men and women in her story come to life and allows the reader to enter their lives, their strug- gles for friendship, honour and survival, their fears, beliefs and feelings Thoen of relief.
