Page 85 BOOK REVIEWS Tartarus Press Strange Tales, ed. Rosalie Parker (North Yorkshire: Tartarus, 2003) & Wormwood: Literature of the Fantastic, Supernatural & Decadent, 16, 20032006 Dara Downey the horror genre is extremely limber, extremely adaptable, extremely useful; the author or filmmaker can use it as a crowbar to lever open locked doors or a small, slim pick to tease the tumblers into giving. The genre can thus be used to open almost any lock on the fears which lie behind the door […]. (Stephen King, Danse Macabre (1982), 163) When King is at his best, he can be remarkably adept at cutting to the core of the genre of which he is the selfproclaimed “King”. Nevertheless, however astute such isolated observations as the above comment might be, it is always possible to find another, equally astute observation, that both contradicts what he is saying and undermines whatever favourable impression of his analytical skills we may have. Elsewhere in Danse Macabre, for example, King states confidently that Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw, with its elegant drawingroom prose and its tightly woven psychological logic, has had very little influence on the American masscult” of mainstream horror (Danse Macabre, 66). What this suggests is that the flexibility which he sees as the defining characteristic of horror has (for him at any rate) a breaking point, a suggestion well in line with his nearhysterical insistence that aesthetic values and intellectual rigour are antithetical to the aims and effects of the genre. It is precisely this sort of inverted snobbery that Tartarus Press are striving to overthrow. -
1 Ken Clarke
KEN CLARKE - MY PROFESSIONAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY When I left junior school at the age of twelve my plastering career started at the well known building Arts & Craft Secondary School, ‘Christopher Wren’, and from this early age I was particularly interested in fibrous plastering. It was a known fact that, of a class of 16, two of the pupils, after four years of schooling, would start their training at a major film studio. I passed my GCE in Building Craft, Paintwork and Plasterwork (copy 1 attached) and was one of the lucky two to be chosen to start training at Shepperton Studios. This was my first achievement (copy 2 – letter of engagement, 9 June 1964, attached). I started Shepperton Studios in the plastering Dept on 22 June 1964 under conditions of a six-month probationary period and a further 4 and half years. During this five-year apprenticeship, I was to do through the block release system, eight weeks at work and two weeks at Art & Craft College ‘Lime Grove’. At the end of five years I was awarded my basic and final City and Guilds in plastering (basic June 1966 and final June 1968 – copies 3 and 4 attached). This was a big achievement for any young man – for me; it was the beginning of a big career. After my five years I was presented with one of the very last certificates of apprenticeship offered by the ‘Film Industry Training Apprenticeship Council’. Thus, my apprenticeship came to an end. (Letter of thanks and delivery of my deeds and certificate 1 June 1969. -

The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School The College of the Liberal Arts ANIMALS, TECHNOLOGY, AND THE ZOOPOETICS OF AMERICAN MODERNISM A Dissertation in English by Christopher T. White 2008 Christopher T. White Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2008 ii The dissertation of Christopher T. White was reviewed and approved* by the following: Sanford Schwartz Associate Professor of English Thesis Advisor Chair of Committee Deborah Clarke Professor of English and Women’s Studies Mark Morrisson Associate Professor of English Susan Squier Brill Professor of Women’s Studies and English Philip Jenkins Sparks Professor of History and Religious Studies Robin Schulze Professor of English Head of the Department of English *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii Abstract This dissertation addresses a striking paradox of American modernity: the historical disappearance of wildlife from the natural environment and the simultaneous proliferation of animal forms across the cultural landscape—in literature, in visual and material culture, and in popular scientific writings during the half-century of dramatic change from 1890 to 1940. Across these venues the figure of the “vanishing animal” emerges as a dominant trope, as modern extinctions and the explosion of machine culture combine to frame animals within a spectral logic—disappearing, but more visible than ever. The first half of this dissertation examines the extensive technological, ideological, and representational apparatus through which animals and animal life are rendered in modern American culture, while the second half explores a significant, if surprising, correlative phenomenon whereby the modernized figure of the animal returns to haunt, and in fact disrupt, the very technics that facilitated its emergence in the first place. -

For Matthew, Jesus is the great teacher (Matt. 23:8). But teacher and teachings are inextricable bound together, Matthew tells us. Patriarchal-Industrial Anxiety and the Re- Turn of the Repressed (Eco-Critical) Simian Mon- Ster
PATRIARCHAL-INDUSTRIAL ANXIETY AND THE RE- TURN OF THE REPRESSED (ECO-CRITICAL) SIMIAN MON- STER David Christopher, University of Victoria Abstract Apocalyptic monkey monsters just keep coming back. Many of the stories have been subject to nu- merous remakes that date from the early-mid twentieth century, into the new millennium with myriad recurring visions of the simian monster, including Murders in the Rue Morgue (1917, 1932, 1986), King Kong (1933, 1976, 2005), Planet of the Apes (1968, 2001, 2011), and “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” (1963, 1983) to name just a few. And in the new millennium, Peter Jackson’s Kong (2005) participates in a rejuvenation of the giant mon- ster movie cycles. In Living in the End Times (2011), Slavoj Žižek states “one of the best ways to detect shifts in the ideological constellation is to compare consecutive remakes of the same story” (Žižek, End Times, 61). By doing so, and in conjunction with his articulation of the socio-psychological mechanics of fantasy, Žižek introduces an analytical framework through which to examine the intermittent return of the simian monster to popular cinema. As suggested here, the simian monster recurs not only because it is an effective uncanny receptacle for capitalist Othering, but also because it represents a larger patriarchal anxiety regarding the monstrous threat of nature and its conquest. Jackson’s Kong, for example, seems to have less to do with the atomic fear of the 1950s giant monster movie cycle with which it participates than with eco-disaster anxieties. Following the trajectory of both the films and their surrounding discourse, this article seeks to demonstrate that these films can be read as the evolution of nearly a century of eco-anxi- eties signified by cinematic simian monsters into increasingly explicit fantasies of redemption from the fear of ecological disaster that is embedded in the repressed contradictions of an aggressively industrial and patriarchal capitalist culture. -
