First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform. -

His works, affecting the complex social problems that are relevant to contemporary American reality (race relations, the death penalty, corruption), as well as a detailed description of the problems and shortcomings in the actions of the judiciary, the legal system and the state. Literary critics and literary critics have noted a significant contribution to the development of this trend in American detective prose. A Study in Violin Pedagogy: Teaching Techniques from Selected Works by Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Bartók, and Delerue Layne Vanderbeek This article is an outline and analysis of a few specific methods of composition used by the composers Sergei Rachmaninoff, Sergei Prokofiev, Béla Bartók, and Georges Delerue for the purpose of reproducing the styles and techniques for an intermediate level violinist. This will be accomplished by gathering information concerning each composer and their style and then reproducing that style in an original composition at the intermediate level. Each composer will be dealt with in a section divided into several parts: relevant biographical and historical information, stylistic analysis, and methods employed to incorporate these stylistic characteristics into the intermediate level composition. The biographical and historical information will consist of pertinent historic, social, and political events that influenced compositional style and growth of each composer. Stylistic analysis will be based upon general historical information and analysis of the specific composition in consideration. Scalar resources, chord and harmony use, texture and rhythm will be discussed and illustrated. The incorporation of these stylistic elements into an intermediate level composition will be a direct conclusion to the previous section. The information gained in the stylistic analysis will be utilized in original intermediate compositions, and it will be illustrated how this is accomplished and how these twentieth-century techniques are being employed and incorporated. Within the section titled “Methods of Stylistic Incorporation,” portions of the intermediate compositions will be used to demonstrate aspects of the composers' styles that were included. Each complete intermediate composition will be placed at the end of each section to demonstrate the results of the analysis. -

Jin Yong's Novels and Hong Kong's Popular Culture Mr Cheng Ching
Jin Yong’s Novels and Hong Kong’s Popular Culture Mr Cheng Ching-hang, Matthew Jin Yong’s martial arts novel, The Book and the Sword, was first serialised in the New Evening Post on 8 February 1955. His novels have been so well received since then that they have become a significant and deeply rooted part of Hong Kong’s popular culture. Jin Yong’s novels are uniquely positioned, somewhere between part literature and part plebeian entertaining read. That is why they have a wide readership following. From serials published in newspapers to films and hit TV drama series, they are at the same time acknowledged by academics as home-grown literature of Hong Kong, and take pride of place in the genre of Chinese novel-writing. The origins of the martial arts novel (also known as the “wuxia novel”) can be traced back to the ancient Shiji (The Records of the Grand Historian), specifically to chapters such as the “Biographies of Knight-errants” and “Men with Swords”. However, the genre draws inspiration from many parts of Chinese history and culture, including the Tang dynasty novels about chivalry, such as Pei Xing’s Nie Yinniang and Du Guangting’s The Man with the Curly Beard; The Water Margin, which was written between the Yuan and Ming dynasties; and the Qing dynasty novels about heroism, such as The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants and Adventures of Emperor Qianlong. In 1915, Lin Shu (Lin Qinnan) wrote a classic Chinese novella, Fumei Records, and its publication in the third issue of the periodical Xiao Shuo Da Guan was accompanied by the earliest use of the term “martial arts novel”. -

Unsung Heroes? A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Lip-Syncing in American and Indian Film Lucie Alaimo Who are these unsung heroes? They are the voice-dubbers in Hollywood film. Throughout the history of Hollywood, actors and actresses have resorted to voice-dubbing in films in which they have had singing numbers. However, in American music performance practices, especially in the popular music and film industries, lip-syncing is often criticized, leading to debate over the technique. In comparison, Bollywood films also feature voice- dubbing, and although there is hostility towards this technique in Hollywood, it is perfectly acceptable in the Indian film industry. The majority of Bollywood films feature singing, and in all, it is the role of the voice-dubbers, also known as playback singers, to provide voices for the film stars. In addition, many of Bollywood’s playback singers have become as popular as, if not more than, the actors and actresses for whom they sing. Much of the reason for this stark difference in acceptance of voice-dubbers is found in the different ideologies of authenticity surrounding the use of lip-syncing. In North America, listeners expect perfection in the performances, yet are disappointed when discovering that there are elements of inauthenticity in them. Yet in India, both film producers and audiences have accepted the need for the talents of multiple people to become involved in the film production. In this paper, I will first discuss ideologies surrounding musical authenticity, then compare how these discourses have shaped and influenced the acceptance or rejection of voice-dubbers in Hollywood and Bollywood films. -
