Roy Orbison “I Fought The Law” from Memphis LP ALBUM (MGM 1973) – One of R many gems Roy recorded for MGM when he was there 1965-1973. Cover of song originally released by the Crickets circa 1960 and later by Bobby Fuller Four. Roy Orbison “Heartache (verson 2)” from I’m Still In Love With You LP ALBUM (Mercury 70617 1975) – First time as a single on MGM absolutely did not sell due to hokey O arrangement and faulty scenario. Both perfected in this recording. As of 1975 (WORT’s beginning), “I Like It Like That” has been one of the few places you could keep up with F Roy’s career. Roy Orbison “ In My Mind” from Regeneration LP ALBUM (Monument 1977) – Great song, but Roy’s 2nd try at the Monument label was no regeneration of his career. That S had to wait till Linda Ronstadt got awareness of him going again with her recording of “Blue Bayou.” H We Three “What I Like About You” from We Can Dance (MHM Productions 2007) – We Three has been around for 4 decades - presently consists of 5 members. Great duel at the end. Los Tres “Me Arrende (I rented a life)” from Arena (Feria Music S.A. 2007) – Very emotionally-charged song that has the audience doing much of the vocals. See a video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m4vKn0MA1I Gary Lewis And The Playboys “This Diamond Ring” from Legendary Masters (EMI 1990) – Actually a : Session singer Ron Hicklin greatly bolsters Gary Lewis’ vocals. “Save A Love” from Rarities (EMI 2010) – Another duet: James Griffin (who wrote the song with Michael Z Gordon) sings unison and harmony with Bobby Vee. One cannot tell their voices apart. Originally released on single in mid-60s. “Stay Down In ” from Forgotten But Not Gone (Forgotten But Not Gone 2007; http://www.forgotten-but-not-gone.org/ ) – Gutsy song about the resilience of New Orleans residents after Katrina. “The Edge Of Love” from Are You With Me Baby (Free Falls 2000) – Original demo by Billy Burnette and (of The Pleasure Fair and Bread) is fleshed out with additional musicians. Someday I’ll get permission to play the original demo. This collection has reviews here: http://www.amazon.com/Roy-Orbison-Monument-Singles-Collection/dp/B004K7M6TC C Bread “Move Over” from Bread (First Album) LP ALBUM (Elektra 1969) – Classic “heavy metal-bubblegum” song from the group that could happily do everything until the O commercial radio and corporate f-heads decided they shall be purveyors of – a source of tension that eventually split up the group. D Walker Brothers “I Only Came To Dance With You” 7-INCH SINGLE (tower 1966) – Record label credits artists as “John Stewart & Scott Engel, now known as the Walker Brothers.” Suzi Jane Hokom “Need All The Help I Can Get” 7-INCH SINGLE (MGM 1966) – She H sounds like Nancy Sinatra. Writer and producer is Lee Hazlewood who also did both for Nancy S. O The Cat’s Meow “La La Lu” 7-INCH SINGLE (Decca 1966) – Fine band also known as U The Beeds Del Kacher “Nightmist Over Highway No. 2” 7-INCH SINGLE (Merri 1959) – R Instrumental with guitarist Del Kacher - prior to his invention of the wah-wah pedal. Big hit in Japan. I remember hearing it on the radio circa 1960 up in Hayward (which is close to another Highway 2). Jethro Tull “We Used To Know” from Stand Up LP ALBUM (Island 1969) – Great use of O the wah-wah pedal in last half of song. Eagles must have had this song in mind when F composing “Hotel California.” Roy Orbison and the Art Movement “Castin’ My Spell On You” from The Big O LP ALBUM (MGM/London 1970) – From great album released in the UK but not here. Full of energetic songs Roy did on stage. W Floyd Cramer “Sweetie Baby” from 7-INCH SINGLE (RCA 1960) – Try to find this on a CD. Song popular on Hayward radio station back in the day. Takes me back to my high school days. While most people were learning piano in order to play “Heart and Soul,” I was perfecting this one. Los Tres “Cerrar Y Abrir (Opening And Closing)” from Arena (Feria Music S.A. 2007) – Another great live piece by legendary Chilean band. Los Tres “No Es Cierto (Not True)” from Arena (Feria Music S.A. 2007) – Ends with some blistering guitar work. Jan Berry Group “Flight No. 9 (Cheyenne)” from Encomium In Memoriam, vol. 1 (Cinicam 2008) – Great lost song by Jan Berry (of Jan & Dean) done up well in this posthumous production. Reelin’ John filling in once more. Now it’s back to the actual source of the Mississippi: miles upstream from Lake Itasca as we discuss here: http://www.jlindquist.com/mapsupp6.html !
