WELCOME to Choate and to the 49th annual New England Independent Schools (N.E.I.S.W.A.) Class “A” Wrestling Championships. The Class “A” league is one of four Independent School leagues in New England which all feed the NEISWA New England Championships. The others are the Graves-Kelsey, the Western New Englands, and the Eastern League. Wrestlers who place in the top four at the Class “A” tournament automatically qualify for the Prep New England tournament, held this year at Lexington Christian Academy in Lexington, MA, Feb 19-20. Wrestlers who place in the top six at the Prep New England tournament qualify to compete at the Prep National Tournament, held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, Feb 25 - 27.

THE TEAM CHASE

Coach Rob Buyea’s Northfield Mount Hermon squad enters the tournament as heavy favorites to win the team title. Runners-up a year ago, the Hoggers wrestled out of New England several times this season, challenging themselves against the big dogs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania while compiling a dual meet record of 14-5. Undefeated against NE prep foes, they crushed their Class A opponents and are ranked #8 among national prep schools. At least seven Hogger wrestlers will be favored to win individual titles, including returning champs Ryan Ponte (125), Omar Bey (130) and Nick Kidd (189), Class A veteran Max Wright (215), big Michael Damien (285), and freshman prodigies Geoffrey Verallis (103) and Tyrel White (112). Can anyone challenge the Hoggers? Not likely. The race is on for second.

Two-time Class A champion (and now coach) Conan Leary led Tabor to a 15-2 dual meet mark. Fourth last year, the Seawolves are both physical and technical, and should battle Loomis for the runner-up spot. Santo Anza (140) and the Zonfrelli brothers, Torin (130) and Anthony (152) have each won Class A titles in the past, and PG’s Petros Hologitas (215) and Ibrahim Khadar (285) have been impressive. This is not a team of just stars, however: Tabor has a tough wrestler in every weight. Connor Murphy (103) is a title contender, as are Alex Jacob (112) and Jake Farias (119). Scott Barnhill (125), Chris Tortolani (135) and Winston Day (160) are tough.

One of the most consistent Class A teams of the decade has been Coach TJ Reap’s Loomis Chaffee Pelicans (20-4). This is a very talented team with a bright future, aided by their new assistant coach, two-time Class A champion Sean Stuer. Like Tabor, they are a threat to place in all 14 weight classes. Defending 171lb titlist Erik Stuer is a team leader, along with Johann Roebelen (160), runner-up a year ago. Caleb Harris (215) is a national prep place winner. Massachusetts state champion Ryan Harding (152) has been dominant all season. Sam Broda (135) will contend for a title, along with youngsters Trey Hughes (140) and Nathan Harris (145). Jack Russo (125) and Cole Mattran (130) are returning Class A place winners.

Rich Gorham’s squad at Andover (9-4) won the title a year ago, but suffered heavy graduation losses. A young but talented team, the Big Blue are led by returning champions Duncan Crystal (135) and Ryan Gaiss (140), plus title contenders Brandon Sneider (125), Colton Dempsey (130) and Anthony Tedesco (145). Will Park (152) has great potential. Watch out for past placers Brian Hanafin (119) and Robert Palmer (160), plus freshman Sven Lerner (112).

The Deerfield Big Green (10-8) rebounded from a 1-5 start to post big wins over Choate and Exeter. Coach Mark Teustch’s boys are ready to make some noise, led by top-ranked Luke Mario (119), champ at 103 a year ago, and vastly improved Harrison Weidner (160), who are both favored to win titles. Christian Saccone (103), Alexis Wagener (145) and Michael Fitzsimmons (189) should also push for top spots.

Veteran coach Dave Hudson led Exeter (8-7) to a shocking upset of a fine Pomfret squad

Strong in the upper weights, Exeter has a Class A medalist in Michael Mocco (152), plus Sam Kishnevsky (160), Elias Stern-Rodriguez (189), Ian Tibbets (215), Theophilus Agbi (285), and veteran Stephen Calabrese (140). Never count out Exeter, which has won more Class A titles than any other team.

The Worcester Hilltoppers (10-7) have improved dramatically during the season and enter the Class A off a fine performance at the Northern Tournament and an upset dual- meet win over Deerfield. Coach Gordie Lockbaum’s team features returning runner-up Praveen Mahendren (125) and leaders Vince Ciavarra (135) and Alex Dillaire (152). Tom Hongsmatip (119), Nick Cornu (130) and Eric Paradis (160) will be tough to contend with.

Second-year coach Sam Doak leads the Choate Wild Boars (6-15) assisted by LJ Spinnato and former Class A Champion (2003) JB Cholnoky. The team is in a rebuilding cycle after graduating numerous seniors from the squad in 2009. This year's team features captain Parker Poliakoff (171). A tough football lineman in the fall, Poliakoff is capable of beating anyone at the weight. Austin Wruble (119) stands 15-1 with 13 pins and is a serious title contender. Senior Captain Nate Bennick should challenge for a top spot at 152. Sophomore Toby Mirman (125) returns to challenge this year, and watch out for the freshman newcomers Jack Murren (103) and Dan Piscatelli (215).

Coaches Jon Rand and his assistant, former Choate star Connor Bozzi, lead the improved Tilton Rams (10-12). Pavel Pluhar (160) is a past Class A place-winner, and along with his brother Dave (112) with challenge for a top spot. Jay Oppenheim (125) is plenty tough, as is post-graduate heavyweight Andrew Diehl. Class A veteran Kirby Livingston (215) has dropped from 285 and is a force at his new weight.

The Phoenix of Hyde-Bath (5-12) are coached by Logan Kidwell and have a title contender is Mike Ingalls (189), plus the two best female wrestlers in the Class A. Zoe Dorian (103) is a returning medalist, and Tierra Williams (130) is a legitimate threat to place.

Coach Wes Jenkins has a young team at Hyde-Woodstock (4-11), featuring Marcos Mercado (112), Patrick McGuire (152), Jake Schuster (160), and Forrest Smith (285)

Williston-Northhampton (3-15) brings back two Class A placers in Sean Lowney (171) and Connor Adams (215). Coach Matt Kanelong has several more skilled wrestlers, including Tony Alvarez (152), Kevin Conroy (160) and Walter McLaughlin (285).

Coach Allen Hsiao of the Wilbraham & Monson Titans (1-17) has struggled with numbers this season, but has a serious title threat in Joseph Thibault (112), plus a good heavyweight in Derek Barnegian.

INDIVIDUAL PREVIEW

103lb: Tabor’s Connor Murphy was runner-up a year ago and is ready for a run at the title, but NMH’s Geoffrey Verallis is the favorite after a dual meet win over Murphy. Hyde-Maine’s Zoe Dorian is a returning placer at the weight. Watch for Phil DeLaMater (Loomis) and Christian Saccone (Deerfield). Jack Murren (Choate) could challenge.

112lb: NMH freshman Tyrel White has been impressive all season, but so has Wilbraham’s Joseph Thibault. The two have not met, and may settle things in the finals. Others include Tabor’s Alex Jacob, Andover’s Sven Lerner and Tilton’s Dave Pluhar.

119lb: Deerfield’s Luke Mario won the 103 title a year ago and is the favorite, but Choate star Austin Wruble would like nothing better than to win a Class A title at home. Jake Farias (Tabor), John Bellizi (Loomis) and Max Adler (NMH) will contend.

125lb: NMH’s Ryan Ponte has two Class A titles to his name and is looking for a third. Andover’s Brandon Sneider is a top contender, along with Jay Oppenhein (Tilton). Worcester’s Praveen Mahendren was runner-up last year at 119, and Jack Russo of Loomis is a past placer.

130lb: Omar Bey of NMH hopes to become the fifth wrestler in Class A history to win four titles. Standing in his way is Andover’s Colton Dempsey, who has beaten Bey in the past, and Tabor’s Torin Zonfrelli, champ at 112 a year ago. This should be a fun weight to watch! Don’t count out Loomis’ Cole Mattran or Worcester’s Nick Cornu. Tierra Williams of Hyde-Maine is a threat here as well.

135lb: Andover’s Duncan Crystal won at 130 a year ago and is the favorite, but he has not faced NMH’s Cole Kourgelis, runner-up at 112 a season ago. Also tough are Sam Broda (Loomis), Chris Tortolani (Tabor) and Vince Ciavarra (Worcester).

140lb: Two former titlists line up here in Andover’s Ryan Gaiss (1st at 135 last year) and Tabor’s Santo Anza (champ at 119 in 2008). They have never faced each other. To make the finals, they must first deal with NMH’s Jared Rubens, who placed 3rd at 130 a year ago, plus Trey Hughes (Loomis) and Stephen Calabrese (Exeter).

145lb: Andover’s Anthony Tedesco edged NMH’s Stephen Piascik 2-1 in their dual meet, and these two may meet again in the finals. Deerfield’s Alexis Wagener, Loomis’ Nathan Harris and Worcester’s Leo Kim hope to spoil that plan.

152lb: Ryan Harding of Loomis has been dominant all season, but this weight is no picnic, with Tabor’s former Class A champ Anthony Zonfrelli and returning medalists in Exeter’s Michael Mocco and NMH’s Nyan Ghosh. Choate’s Nate Bennick can go with anyone here or at 160. Worcester’s Alex Dellaire has come on strong during the season, and Andover’s Will Park has great potential. Look out for Tony Alvarez (Williston).

160lb: Next to 152, this is perhaps the deepest weight in the tournament, with at least ten quality wrestlers. Deerfield’s Harrison Weidner has improved greatly after a sixth-place finish at this weight a year ago. He topped Loomis’ Johann Roebelen during the season, but Roebelen, 2nd at the weight last year, is ready for a rematch. Pavel Pluhar of Tilton is a title contender, along with Keegan Tollman of NMH. Tabor’s Winston Day, Exeter’s Sam Kishnevsky and Andover’s Robert Palmer are just a short step behind. Watch for Jake Schuster (Hyde-CT).

171lb: Loomis’ Erik Stuer was champ here a year ago and is a National Prep All American. Choate’s Parker Poliakoff has the talent to knock him off, but he must first get past NMH’s Thomas Orner, a placer at 189 a year ago. Williston’s Sean Lowney also has a Class A medal, and Tabor’s Adam O’Reilly can contend.

189lb: NMH’s Nick Kidd jumped up two weights after winning at 160 a year ago. He is the favorite, but Hyde-Maine’s Mike Ingalls made the late pull from 215 down to this weight and must be considered a title threat. Deerfield’s Michael Fitzsimmons and Exeter’s Elias Stern-Rodriguez should contend. A dark horse is Tilton’s Taylor McQuade.

215lb: Three superb wrestlers at the top here in Max Wright (NMH), Caleb Harris (Loomis) and Petros Hologitas (Tabor). Wright is a 2-time Class A runner-up and Harris a National Prep placer, but Hologitas is right at their level. Any of the three could win. Connor Adams of Williston and Kirby Livingston of Tilton are returning Class A placers.

285lb: Michael Damien (NMH) is the favorite, based on his razor-thin 2-1 dual meet win over Tabor’s Ibrahim Khadar, but don’t be surprised if Khadar takes the title. Tilton post- grad Andrew Diehl is a tough competitor, and Exeter’s Theophilus Agbi has improved with hard work. Watch out for Walter McLaughlin (Williston).
