A pesar de que en la ciudad de Nueva York es prácticamente impensable el no encontrar un determinado libro, por raro que éste sea, me fue del todo imposible hacerme con un diccionario de arte bilingüe, español-ingles. Hice averiguaciones entre mis colegas, visité bibliotecas públicas, consulté en diferentes editoriales y lle- gué a la conclusión de que en el área anglosajona no existía ningún diccionario de estas características: todos los que pude encontrar se centraban especialmente en las biografías de pintores, arquitectos, escultores, etc… Cuando volvía a Madrid, repetí la operación con idénticos resultados. Curiosamente, todos los tra- ductores, librerías, etc. con los que me puse en contacto coincidían en la existen- cia de un vacío en este sentido; todos estábamos de acuerdo en la necesidad de la aparición de un diccionario que tan útil y necesario nos podría resultar en espe- cial a los que nos dedicamos al mundo de la traducción. Así que empecé a dar vueltas a la idea de escribir, más que un diccionario que tan útil y necesario nos podría resultar en especial a los que nos dedicamos al mundo de la traducción. Así que empecé a dar vueltas a la idea de escribir, más que un diccionario, un vocabulario españoñ/inglés-inglés/español de términos de arte, a través y basán- dome en las imnumerables notas que ha ido tomando a lo largo de estos últimos años. Una vez comenzado me resultó difícil limitarme a traducir simplemente el léxico artístico, y con la inestimable colaboración de Federico Lewin de Aguinagalde, quien además de ser uno de los mejores traductores del país, un magnífico experto en arte, tenía la enorme suerte de tenerlo como padre, comen- cé éste, como decía al principio, pequeño pero laborioso diccionario. Por supuesto no pretendo que sea exhaustivo, ni un tratado a fondo; simplemente quiero apor- tar una pequeña ayuda, nacida de la experiencia y de las muchas, muchísimas horas de dedicación al tema, a los que como yo, se encuentran a veces con muchas dificultades en encontrar la palabra justa en el idioma necesario. Brooks Jeffery They lack our faith, but we lack their works. - Cardinal Ximenez de Cisneros Prior to the Spanish colonization of the Americas, beginning at the end of the fifteenth century, Spain was completing the final chapters of the Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula after eight centuries of Islamic rule and cultural dominance. Although often ignored in the histories of the Spanish colonial period, people of Muslim descent traveled to Hispano- America1 during its initial colonization. Evidence of this cultural assim- ilation can be seen in the profound legacy of Islamic architectural characteristics in the Hispano-American built environment that is still evident today. This paper attempts to recognize this Islamic legacy through an analysis of three levels of the Hispano-American built envi- ronment: ornamentation, architectural form, and open space. Historical Background Beginning in 711, a succession of Islamic dynasties ruled the Iberian Peninsula, including the Umayyads (711-750), Abbasids (750-1082), Almoravids (1082-1147), Almohads (1147-1184), and the Nasrids (1184-1492), producing many of Islamic architecture's finest monu- ments: the Great Mosque of Cordoba (786-991), the rural palatial complex of Medinat az-Zahra (936), and the Alhambra (1238-1492).     The Architectural Style of Bay Pines VAMC Lauren Webb July 2011 The architectural style of the original buildings at Bay Pines VA Medical Center is most often described as “Mediterranean Revival,” “Neo-Baroque,” or—somewhat rarely—“Churrigueresque.” However, with the shortage of similar buildings in the surrounding area and the chronological distance between the facility’s 1933 construction and Baroque’s popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is often wondered how such a style came to be chosen for Bay Pines. This paper is an attempt to first, briefly explain the Baroque and Churrigueresque styles in Spain and Spanish America, second, outline the renewal of Spanish-inspired architecture in North American during the early 20th century, and finally, indicate some of the characteristics in the original buildings which mark Bay Pines as a Spanish Baroque- inspired building. The Spanish Baroque and Churrigueresque The Baroque style can be succinctly defined as “a style of artistic expression prevalent especially in the 17th century that is marked by use of complex forms, bold ornamentation, and the juxtaposition of contrasting elements.” But the beauty of these contrasting elements can be traced over centuries, particularly for the Spanish Baroque, through the evolution of design and the input of various cultures living in and interacting with Spain over that time. Much of the ornamentation of the Spanish Baroque can be traced as far back as the twelfth century, when Moorish and Arabesque design dominated the architectural scene, often referred to as the Mudéjar style. During the time of relative peace between Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Spain— the Convivencia—these Arabic designs were incorporated into synagogues and cathedrals, along with mosques.

Through his commissions he did not only build a house and furnish it, but also erected a monument of the history of his family. By comparing parts of the furnishing of the Neues SchloB with contemporary objects which are partly in the house it is evident that the majority of these are influenced by the Empire style. Although this era is known under the name Biedermeier, its source of style and decoration is clearly Empire.

    NEIL AYLING: COMPOSITE ORDER 17 JANUARY - 1 MARCH, 2014 Private View, Thursday 16 January, 6 - 9pm Composite Order presents a series of new sculptures by British artist Neil Ayling (b.1983), exploring the interiors of Venetian churches and basilica, specifically St. Giorgio Maggiore on the Palladio Island. Ayling encountered a number of these classical buildings on a recent trip to the Venice Biennale and became fascinated by a particular architectural feature dating from the Renaissance period called Composite Order, that describes a combination of particular decorative styles used to embellish the uppermost section of a column. For his large-scale sculptures, that are up to nine feet high, Ayling used the photographs he made of the architectural details as a starting point, reconfiguring them by cutting and folding the printed image along the lines and angles of the building, creating structural forms that splay out in every angle creating irregular shapes entirely at odds with the logics of classical composition. Some of the sculptures are covered in fragments of the photographic images, applied using wet plaster, similar to the tradition of frescoes and trompe l’oeil common to Venetian churches. The exhibition also includes a site-specific installation made in response to the gallery’s architecture. Installed at ceiling height, the piece twists its way throughout the two gallery buildings, drawing the viewers’ eye upwards and echoing the effect of entering the cavernous interiors of the churches in Venice. Shapiro HE AMAZONS offer a remarkable example of the lacunose and T fragmented state of ancient evidence for many Greek myths. For while we hear virtually nothing about them in extant litera­ ture before the mid-fifth century, they are depicted in art starting in the late eighth! and are extremely popular, especially in Attica, from the first half of the sixth. Thus all we know about the Greeks' con­ ception of the Amazons in the archaic period comes from visual rep­ resentations, not from written sources, and it would be hazardous to assume that various 'facts' and details supplied by later writers were familiar to the sixth-century Greek. The problem of locating the Amazons is a good case in point. Most scholars assume that Herakles' battle with the Amazons, so popular on Attic vases, took place at the Amazon city Themiskyra in Asia Minor, on the river Thermodon near the Black Sea, where most ancient writers place it.2 But the earliest of these is Apollodoros (2.5.9), and, as I shall argue, alternate traditions locating the Ama­ zons elsewhere may have been known to the archaic vase-painter and viewer. An encounter with Amazons figures among the exploits of three important Greek heroes, and each story entered the Attic vase­ painters' repertoire at a different time in the course of the sixth century. First came Herakles' battle to obtain the girdle of Hippolyte (although the prize itself is never shown), his ninth labor.

Ancient astronomers looked to the night sky for practical reasons, such as the construction of calendars by which time could evenly be divided, and for prognosis, such as the foretelling of future events based on the movements of the planets and stars. While scholars have written much about the Greco-Roman understanding of the night sky, few studies exist that examine Jewish cosmological thought in relation to the appearance of the Late Roman-Byzantine synagogue Helios-zodiac cycle. This dissertation surveys the ways that ancient Jews experienced the night sky, including literature of the Second Temple (sixth century BCE – 70 CE), rabbinic and mystical writings, and Helios-zodiac cycles in synagogues of ancient Palestine.
