It is likely that these con- cerns included important commissions from his principal patron, the Emperor Maximilian ii [Fig. 9.1], who had been heard to express himself rather dis- satisfied with Strada’s continued occupation for his Bavarian brother-in-law. Already two year earlier, when Duke Albrecht had ‘borrowed’ Strada from the Emperor to travel to Italy to buy antiquities and works of art and to advise him on the accommodation for his collections, Maximilian had conceded this with some hesitation, telling the Duke that he could not easily spare Strada, whom he employed in several projects.1 Unfortunately Maximilian did not specify what projects these were. They certainly included the tomb for his parents in St Vitus’ Cathedral in Prague, that was to be executed by Alexander Colin, and for which Strada had been sent to Prague already in March of 1565 [Figs. 9.2–9.3].     Vandalism and Social Duty: The Victorian Rebuilding of the ‘Street Parish’ Churches, Ryedale, North Yorkshire 2 Volumes Volume I of II David C Smith PhD University of York Archaeology December 2014 Abstract The mid-19th century saw the greatest change to the material culture of Anglican worship since the Reformation. Yet despite the singular importance of this period to the life of the parish church, archaeologists have rarely engaged with these buildings. This thesis proposes an archaeological methodology for the examination of parish churches heavily restored or rebuilt during the 19th century. This innovative and flexible archaeological methodology integrates metric recording, systematic visual and stratigraphic analyses, 3D reconstruction, and a detailed synthesis of documentary resources. The ‘Street Parish’ churches in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, which were restored between 1855-1872, are utilised as case studies to test this methodology. Rather than being wholly dictated by national trends, the Victorian restoration of parish churches is shown to be a complex negotiation between these trends and local factors, including local personalities and the existing fabric. Indeed this thesis demonstrates that Victorian rebuild churches are heavily influenced by the earlier structures on the same site, often retaining the medieval plan form and architectural development. This study shows that through the archaeological study of 19th-century restoration, it is possible to recover a huge dataset which represents a significant thread of evidence about the character and development of the medieval church as well as post-medieval church investment, which have hitherto been missed or deliberately ignored by existing academic discourses. This research informs our understanding of these under-valued buildings, in order to enable their strategic future management.

A pesar de que en la ciudad de Nueva York es prácticamente impensable el no encontrar un determinado libro, por raro que éste sea, me fue del todo imposible hacerme con un diccionario de arte bilingüe, español-ingles. Hice averiguaciones entre mis colegas, visité bibliotecas públicas, consulté en diferentes editoriales y lle- gué a la conclusión de que en el área anglosajona no existía ningún diccionario de estas características: todos los que pude encontrar se centraban especialmente en las biografías de pintores, arquitectos, escultores, etc… Cuando volvía a Madrid, repetí la operación con idénticos resultados.
