3:00 PM Late afternoon orientation city tour. Visit the Catedral de Barcelona, best example of Mediterranean Gothic Architecture. We will end the tour with a sunset visit to Norman Foster’s Collserola communications tower for a panoramic view of the city. Dinner on your own. Suggestions will be provided. (B)

Wednesday, April 27, 2005 Lecture on Gaudi & Picasso at the hotel conference room by Professor Haworth. Lecture will be followed by tour of the mazes of narrow streets of Barri Gotic dating from the middle ages. We will explore in detail the best examples of Barcelona’s “modernisme” including the Casa Mila, also known as “la Pedrera” declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO. Lunch on your own. Afternoon tour with a visit to featuring 2,500 original drawings. Afternoon visit to Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece: The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia as well as the most famous park in Barcelona: Parc Guell, formerly labeled as “outrageous modernism” and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Return to hotel. Dinner on your own. (B)

Thursday, April 28, 2005 Guided visit by an Architect from the Catalunya College of Architects. We will tour the Olympic Esplanade, showcase of contemporary world famous architects: the Palau d’Esports Sant Jordi, designed by Arata Isozaki, the INFEC Pavilion, designed by Ricardo Bofill, the communications tower, one of Santiago Calatrava’s finest works, the Barcelona Pavilion, jewel of vanguard architecture designed by Mies Van der Rohe and The Joan Miro Foundations, designed by Josep Luis Sert. Walk around Barcelona’s harbor and enjoy lunch on your own at a seafood restaurant at Port Olympic. Remainder of afternoon and dinner on your own. Suggested activity: Visit to Museu d’art Contemporani. (B)

Friday, April 29, 2005 Morning visit to the Archives Building of the Crown of Aragon, Plaza del Rei and the Great Royal Palace, original residence of the counts of Barcelona. Moving on to the political heart of Catalan culture we will stop at Placa de Sant Jaume and the majestic Doric portico of the Palau de la Generalitat, the , that leads us to some of the most flamboyant Gothic style buildings dating from 1432, such as the Chapel of St. George and the Casa del Ayuntamiento de la Ciutat, the City Hall. We will take a leisurely walk through the las Ramblas until we reach the Palau de la Musica. Lunch on your own and remaining of the afternoon free. Suggested activities: visit to Universal Forum for Cultures open in 2004. (B)

Saturday, April 30, 2005 Free morning. Hotel check out. Transfer to airport for flight from Barcelona to Madrid mid afternoon to meet up with the main group for The Islamic Legacy in the Iberian Peninsula. (B)

PAYMENT and CANCELLATION POLICY:

Deposit of $300 per passenger due: December 20, 2004. This amount will be non-refundable after this date and applies to the total payment. However if another traveler assumes your spot on the trip we can then refund this amount to you up to January 14th. After January 14th, ANY cancellations (regardless if a substitute is found) are subject to policies listed below.

Full payment will be due January 14, 2005

Payment for the deposit can be made by credit card. Final payment must be made by check or money order and be made payable to Carleton College and mailed to the Alumni Affairs Office, One North College Street, Northfield, MN 55057.

• Cancellations made between January 14-March 14th will be refunded 50% of the trip cost. • Cancellations made March 15th and after will forfeit the entire cost of the trip. • Adding passengers to the trip March 15th or after (space permitting) will result in a $150 late charge in addition to full payment.’ • Substituting a new passenger for a canceled passenger March 15th or after will result in a $150 fee to the passenger plus full payment.

No refund or adjustment can be made for any portion of the services not used such as voluntary non-usages of hotel accommodations, scheduled meals or any planned activity described in your itinerary.

All travelers are required to carry a valid passport. Passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months after trip departure date.

Refund will be made for all passenger payments in full, less unrecoverable pre-paid expenses should the U.S. State Department issue a travel warning advising against travel to the country due to unsafe conditions.
