A specialist in modern art, Dr. Klein has lectured widely on Picasso and published several works on the artist’s great friend and rival, Henri Matisse. Begin with two days in Barcelona, where Picasso, already a prodigy, spent his adolescence. See his formative influences—the Romanesque frescoes of the National Art Museum of Catalonia and Gaudí’s revolutionary buildings—and dine at Els Quatre Gats, a local restaurant he frequented. Attend an evening performance at the Palau de la Música Catalana, built in the Catalan modernist style whose organic forms inspired Picasso. Then fly to Nice to enjoy four days on the French Riviera, where the mature master spent his summers and lived out his last 15 years. Discover museums devoted to his contemporaries Matisse, Fernand Léger, and Pierre Bonnard, and explore the Picasso Museums of Vallauris and Antibes.
