St. Patrick Catholic Church | 4 From Parochial Vicar, Fr. Pedro Mercado Saint Clare and Television

Many of us are very aware of Saint Francis of Assisi. We may know about some of his well-known male followers, such as Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Bonaventure. There is a female saint who was close to Saint Francis and was one of his first followers. She was Saint Clare. Her feast day is celebrated on August 11. Saint Clare was born into a wealthy family in 1194, but she decided to live a life of poverty after hearing Saint Francis preach. He became her lifelong friend and spiritual guide. Saint Clare founded the Order of the Poor Clare Nuns and was named abbess by Saint Francis. She remained in this position until her death. The Poor Clare nuns were known to walk barefoot, to sleep on the ground, to eat no meat, and they only spoke when necessary. Saint Clare encouraged the sisters to avoid the sins of the tongue and to keep their minds totally focused on God. Saint Clare’s total trust in God was visibly seen when the Saracens invaded her convent. It is said that “Clare had the Blessed Sacrament placed on the wall of the convent when it faced attack by invading Saracens. ‘Does it please you, O God, to deliver into the hands of these beasts the defenseless children I have nourished with your love? I beseech you, dear Lord, protect these whom I am now unable to protect.’ To her sisters she said, ‘Don’t be afraid. Trust in Jesus.’ The Saracens fled” (Saint Clare of Assisi, Franciscan Media, https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-clare-of- assisi/). As Saint Clare got older her health deteriorated. This time of illness became vital for Saint Clare being named the patron saint of television. “It’s said that one Christmas Eve, Clare was too sick to attend Mass and was overcome with emotion at being bedridden. The Holy Spirit came to her rescue, however, and projected the images and sounds of Mass on the wall of her room, in order to allow Clare to be ‘present’ to the Mass” (The Patron Saint of TV … from the 13th Century? Therefore, due to this vision of hers, in 1957, Pope Piux XII named Saint Clare the patron saint of television. You all might have heard of Mother Angelica, the founder of the Catholic “Eternal Word Television Network” (EWTN). Mother Angelica was a Poor Clare nun. EWTN has had its financial strains but it has continued to bring Catholicism to the world.

There are many prayers of intercession related to Saint Clare. Let us say the following prayer of intercession when we are able to: Dear St. Clare, inspired by St. Francis, you became a poor nun for the sake of Jesus, and established the “Poor Clares.” We are told how greatly you cherished Christ present in the Sacrament of the Altar. Is the Mass not a kind of television of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross? Help all television workers to broadcast the truth and draw away from falsehood and evil. Amen.
