With regard to the fieldwork for this thesis, I spent six months in Balochistan and Pakistan conducting ethnographic and empirical research. Twenty-eight individuals have participated in my research as interviewees. It is not possible to mention their names one by one; therefore, I must acknowledge that, without their interviews, support and insights, this project could not have been completed. I am grateful to Zahoor Ahmed Buladai (a member of Balochistan Provincial Assembly during my fieldwork), to whom I am indebted for his kind support, friendship and close association. Zahoor has been very helpful not only for this research but also in every walk of life. A number of people have offered valuable advice and information in the course of this study. Thank you all for your love and care. vii Dedication To all the Stateless nations (particularly the victims of conflict and violence) who are being suppressed and brutalised because of what is theirs: distinct identity, history, culture and language, concept of nationhood and enormous potential of resources. viii Abstract Balochistan is one of the federating units (provinces) of Pakistan; it constitutes 44 % of Pakistan’s total territory and has been in a state of confrontation with the state since 1948. This is because the majority of the Baloch consider that the Pakistani state annexed their land forcibly, against the will and desire of the people. The Baloch nationalists have never accepted this annexation, and as a result the state has been facing serious crises precipitated by various factors. Ever since Pakistan’s annexation of Balochistan, there has been an on-going conflict between the Baloch (i.e., the Baloch people) and the state of Pakistan. The fact is that the conflict in Balochistan is multidimensional, including political, social and economic factors, the avarice of the Pakistani state and the grievances of the Baloch people. In order to aid an understanding of the various backgrounds to the conflict, this thesis contributes to debates on the politics of education and conflict in Pakistan’s Balochistan.

Being the biggest venture in the bilateral ties of China-Pakistan, the project faces certain undermining factors. The research explores the lingering security concerns that surfaced due to the destabilizing and separatist efforts of the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and Baloch Liberation Front (BLF). It also elaborates the Chinese concerns and Pakistan efforts to address these concerns while assuming the hypothesis that a secure and stable environment is necessary to reap the fruits of this mega project. The work also answers some innovative questions thus helpful for the students of Economics, Pakistan history, politics, Internal Relations, Foreign Policy and for those who intend to read about China-Pakistan and their joint ventures as CPEC. The main objective of the study to empirically analyses the response of Baloch community. Graphical and empirical methods have been adopted to describe and analyze the facts and figures related to the topic. The results clearly indicate that CPEC will face resistance from people of Balochistan, which will negatively affect the prospects of CPEC.

    The British Advent in Balochistan Javed Haider Syed ∗∗∗ An Abstract On the eve of the British advent, the social and economic infrastructure of Balochistan represented almost all characteristics of a desert society, such as isolation, group feeling, chivalry, hospitality, tribal enmity and animal husbandry. There was hardly any area in Balochistan that could be considered an urban settlement. Even the capital of the state of Kalat looked like a conglomeration of mud dwellings with the only royal residence emerging as a symbol of status and power. In terms of social relations, economic institutions, and politics, society demonstrated almost every aspect of tribalism in every walk of life. This paper, therefore, presents a historical survey of the involvement of Balochistan in the power politics of various empire- builders. In particular, those circumstances and factors have been examined that brought the British to Balochistan. The First Afghan War was fought apparently to send a message to Moscow that the British would not tolerate any Russian advances towards their Indian empire. To what extent the Russian threat, or for that matter, the earlier French threat under Napoleon, were real or imagined, is also covered in this paper. A holistic account of British advent in Balochistan must begin with “The Great Game” in which Russia, France, and England, were involved. Since the time of Peter the Great (1672-1725), the Russians were desperately looking for access to warm waters. The Dardanelles were guarded by Turkey. After many abortive attempts, Russians concentrated on the Central Asian steppes in order to find a route to the Persian Gulf as well as the Indian Ocean.

As far as Makran is concerned it is quite clear that this region always remained political and democratic. This society is structured on kinship basis. All decisions are made at household level and no tribal structure is present to make collective decision. Communal leadership is a function of aged people in the community. In this article, I will analyze the electoral behaviours of the people of Makran, and then compare the different election results of Makran region. Key words: Democratic Process, Electoral Behaviour, Electoral Politics, Legislative Body, Makran Introduction Balochistan is a largest province of Pakistan. It is spread over 347000 km, and divided into 8 divisions. Every division has different history during the election process. One important division of Balochistan is Makran. This division consists of three districts Panjgur, Kech and Gwadar. This division performed a different role in every election than other parts of Balochistan. Makran actively participated in every local, provincial and national election and changed its representatives from time to time. On the other hand the rest of Balochistan mostly continued the hereditary system of the representatives. Elections Modern nations have big states with huge territories and populations. It is really impossible for the public of such states to gather at one place for political matters.
