  • The Catholic Church in the Czech Lands During the Nazi
STUDIA HUMANITATIS JOURNAL, 2021, 1 (1), pp. 192-208 ISSN: 2792-3967 DOI: https://doi.org/10.53701/shj.v1i1.22 Artículo / Article THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE CZECH LANDS DURING THE NAZI OCCUPATION IN 1939–1945 AND AFTER1 LA IGLESIA CATÓLICA EN LOS TERRITORIOS CHECOS DURANTE LA OCUPACIÓN NAZI ENTRE LOS AÑOS 1939–1945 Y DESPUÉS Marek Smid Charles University, Czech Republic ORCID: 0000-0001-8613-8673 [email protected] | Abstract | This study addresses the religious persecution in the Czech lands (Bohemia, Moravia and Czech Silesia) during World War II, when these territories were part of the Bohemian and Moravian Protectorate being occupied by Nazi Germany. Its aim is to demonstrate how the Catholic Church, its hierarchy and its priests acted as relevant patriots who did not hesitate to stand up to the occupying forces and express their rejection of their procedures. Both the domestic Catholic camp and the ties abroad towards the Holy See and its representation will be analysed. There will also be presented the personalities of priests, who became the victims of the Nazi rampage in the Czech lands at the end of the study. The basic method consists of a descriptive analysis that takes into account the comparative approach of the spiritual life before and after the occupation. Furthermore, the analytical-synthetic method will be used, combined with the subsequent interpretation of the findings. An additional method, not always easy to apply, is hermeneutics, i.e., the interpretation of socio-historical phenomena in an effort to reveal the uniqueness of the analysed texts and sources and emphasize their singularity in the cultural and spiritual development of Czech Church history in the first half of the 20th century.

  • 'A Mere Ribbon of Silk'?
Scandinavica Vol 54 No 1 2015 ‘A Mere Ribbon of Silk’? The Abolition of the Norwegian Nobility 1814-1824 David Redvaldsen UCL Abstract The Norwegian Constitution of May 1814 contained several radical provisions. Paragraphs 23 and 108 prohibited the king to create new nobility or bestow other hereditary privileges. While an overwhelming majority at the Constitutional Assembly voted to restrict aristocracy, existing noble families were allowed to retain some of their privileges. This article identifies these families and states what the privileges involved. In November 1814 Norway entered a forced union with Sweden. The remaining rights of the nobility and the institution itself caused dissent between parliament and the Swedish King. In 1816, 1818 and 1821 parliament voted to abolish aristocracy. On the first two occasions the King vetoed the bill, but he reluctantly sanctioned it in 1821. This was because the constitution had established a mechanism whereby parliament could override the royal veto. In return for the king’s sanction, parliament accepted the principle of compensation for lost noble rights and agreed to consider a proposal by the king to institute a new order of nobility without legal privileges. The latter was rejected in 1824 with reference to the constitution. The constitution was thus vital at every stage in abolishing the nobility. Keywords Norwegian Constitution, nobility, noble privileges, Norwegian Parliament, Carl Johan 82 Scandinavica Vol 54 No 1 2015 To an even greater extent than Denmark and Sweden, Norway is known for its egalitarianism. As noted by Ulf Torgersen, the country has no social register, hardly any exclusive clubs, few private schools, no real rival to ‘Epsom, Henley, or the Grand National’ and there are no society pages in Norwegian newspapers (Torgersen 1974: 208, 209).

This joy and hope moved me as well when the Congregation for Catholic Education published the Guidelines for the Study and Teaching of the Church’s Social Doctrine in the Formation of Priests in 1988. They clearly illustrated the order and the continuity of Catholic social doctrine in general and of the papal doctrinal statements in particular. These guidelines were also in a welcome way responsive to the pedagogical concerns of Catholic social doctrine. At this occasion in 1988, the idea came to me that it would be important for the Holy See if, besides the already existing scientific Pontifical Academies, such as the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, there would also be one for social sciences, because Catholic social doctrine is current as a social design recommendation for all parts of the world and important for the social sciences. The timeliness of Catholic social doctrine increased after the promulgation of these guidelines still further as, after 1988, a political tum emerged in Central and Eastern Europe with the end of Communism, which created an ideological and worldview vacuum which needed, and still needs, to be addressed. Cardinal Stanisław Ryłko President Pontifical Council for the Laity Vatican City 28TH PLENARY ASSEMBLY OF THE PONTIFICAL COUNCIL FOR THE LAITY “A dicastery for the laity: past and future ...” Rome, 16-18 June 2016 WELCOME ADDRESS TO THE HOLY FATHER Holy Father, The members and consultors of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, who have come together here in Rome for the 28th Plenary Assembly of the dicastery, wish to express their heartfelt gratitude for the gift of this audience and to convey their affection and filial devotion. Our Plenary Assembly has a special characteristic this time because it is bringing to a close a long and fruitful stage in the history of this dicastery. As part of the reform of the Roman Curia, being led by you Holy Father, on 1 September next, the Council will cease to exist as it is presently structured to make way for a new dicastery with extended jurisdiction. In addition to laity, it will also include family and life. The theme guiding the discussions at this Assembly is the following: “A dicastery for the laity: past and future ...”. We wanted to look back over the history of this Council - not without deep emotion - and to thank the Lord for the fifty years of service given to the great cause of the laity in the Church. This dicastery was established by the explicit will of the Vatican Council Fathers, and it has witnessed the abundant fruits that the Second Vatican Council teaching on the laity has generated in the lives of huge numbers of men and women, adults and young people of our time.

SONS OF DON BOSCO SUCCESSORS OF THE APOSTLES SALESIAN BISHOPS 1884 to 2001 by Charles N. Bransom, Jr. INTRODUCTION he study of apostolic succession and episcopal lineages has long fascinated students of church history. It was not until the middle T of the twentieth century, however, that a systematic attempt was made to trace and catalogue the consecrations of bishops on a world-wide basis. A small group of researchers has catalogued the consecrations of tens of thou sands of bishops dating back many centuries. The fruits of their labors--labors that are on going-have resulted in a database, which can trace the episcopal lineage of any living bishop and the vast majority of deceased bishops. In 1984, I began a project on the episcopal ordinations of bishops of re ligious orders and congregations. One fruit of that work was a study of the ordi nations of Salesian bishops, Les Eveques Salesiens. The present work updates, corrects and expands the 1984 study. In 1984, the episcopal ordinations of 130 bishops were presented. This study contains the details of 196 bishops. The text has been expanded to include the episcopal lineages of the bishops. Of the 196 bishops in this study, 183 trace their orders to Scipione Re biba, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop ofChieti in 1541. The Rebiban suc cession is the major episcopal line in the contemporary Catholic episcopate. More than 91 % of the more than 4,500 bishops alive today trace their orders 54 Journal of Salesian Studies back to Rebiba Why so many bishops should trace their lineages to this one bishop can be explained, in great part, by the intense sacramental activity of Pope Benedict XIII, who consecrated 139 bishops during his pontificate, many of them cardinals, nuncios and bishops of important sees who in tum conse crated many other bishops.
