Danielle de Picciotto

Profile

Danielle de Picciotto has been influencing and shaping Berlin’s creative subculture as an artist since the late 80ies. The artist is known to mix the different elements of painting, photography, objects, film and video material to create new ways of expression. Her belief that a new "picture" is born through communication in art as well as society can clearly be seen in her range of themes: interaction between individuals and groups, isolation and relationships in general. Her installations consisting of expressive oil paintings, cult objects out of clay and straw, super 8 film loops, slides and photography, magnifying modern and archaic society, are known for their strong impact and intense expression.

Together with Dr. Motte she founded the Love Parade and was the first official street wear designer of Berlin influencing the colourful fashion of the 90ies.

Musically she sang with the hip-hop crossover band "Space Cowboys" for 6 years, with the "Ocean Club" for 2 years (of which she was also the founder together with ).

Believing that all art forms become truly alive when they intermingle and merge she has initiated countless group exhibitions, concerts, fashion shows, charity projects, trend setting parties and events with artists, musicians, writers, architects, designers, dancers.

Besides her own exhibitions in Galleries (Haus am Lützowplatz, Berlin; Staatsgalerie Stuttgart) she has created room installations and art for every important club in Berlin, understanding the role these melting points of music, art, fashion and communication have in today’s society.

Realising the importance of being able to touch people directly through art in environments in which they feel emotionally open she became one of the founders of the new underground Berlin club art culture. To introduce this and other young art forms to the market she founded the gallery "Institut" and presented over 150 artists, writers and musicians while doing own exhibitions on the side.

Her belief that as an artist one not only holds responsibility towards oneself but also must think in larger terms has encouraged her to start working more and more outside of Berlin initiating Berlin group exhibitions in Naples, Hong Kong, Rome, Milan and major cities in Germany.

Her collaborations with Dr Motte, Gudrun Gut, , , Stefan Hoenerloh, Dead Chickens, West Bam, Marusha, Ben Becker, Johnny Klimek, Terranova, Jim Avignon, , , David Harrow (Dub Syndicate), Rope, Lillevän, Rechenzentrum, Zeitblom, , and many other artists and musicians have helped to communicate the colourful creative scene Berlin's subculture can offer. 5th December 2003 Danielle de Picciotto Of Muses and Medusas... Open: 5th December - 23th January 2004

Press text:

Danielle de Picciotto has been influencing and shaping Berlin's creative subculture as an artist since the late 80ies.

In her works she combines various techniques of painting, photography and digital picture enhancement to give new space and form to her ideas.

Her choice of subject reflects her opinion that a "new picture" - in the artistic as well as in the social sense of the word - can only come through communication and combination of different elements.

Danielle de Picciotto's work is result of a critical reflection of social structures of modern as well as archaic times, convincing in their translation and through intensive expression.

...Of Muses and Medusas...

Danielle de Picciotto's most recent work represents a cyclus focussing on the scenes of nightlife in a metropolis like Berlin.

The actors of these, often bizarre situations are not born out of imagination but are real existing people of the Berlin nightlife scene, caught by the sensitive gaze of the artist who - though all glamour and exhibitionism - always puts her focus on their fragile personality.

In the emphasis of the momentum there is a relation between the artist and the colours, shapes, forms and poses of Otto Dix enhancing the situation to the grotesque. The actors are laid bare without touching their dignity. Instead Danielle de Picciotto's paintings present a longing - the never-ending hunger for life and intensity.
