Background Thomas Wydler Media Information, for free use New Release, November 9th, 2012 on CD and as Download: Thomas Wydler – On the Mat and Off Background Thomas Wydler Thomas Wydler began his career in his hometown of Zurich, Switzerland, playing drums in the New Wave-Formation, HERTZ. In the spring 1980, as the drummer for Rudolf Dietrich's band MUTTERFREUDEN, he played in Berlin for the first time and that fall he moved to the walled city. Inspired by New York's No Wave, Wydler founded the seminal '80s Berlin instrumental band DIE HAUT, for which he remained drummer and driving force until 1994. Wydler is also well known as drummer for NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS. He first joined them in 1985 on a UK tour for the album 'The First Born Is Dead' and remains a fixture of that outfit to this day. An experienced and sought after drummer, Wydler has played on dozens of albums and in hundreds of concerts. He has extensive credits in sound art and film and maintains continuing associations with many bands and independent projects. Frequent collaborators include Mick Harvey, LES HOMMES SAUVAGES, Blixa Bargeld, and recently Dieter Meier’s project OUT OF CHAOS. ON THE MAT AND OFF, scheduled for release by Soulsheriff Records (CH) in November 2012, is Wydler's fourth release under his own name. His three previous albums are: 2007 „Soul Sheriff“ with Jochen Arbeit (EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN, DIE HAUT), Kristof Hahn (LES HOMMES SAUVAGES, THE SWANS), Beate Bartel (LIAISONS DANGEREUSES, MATADOR). 2005 “Wie Ich Tat Es”, a musical tribute to Abstract Expressionist painter and friend, Walter Stöhrer (1937-2000), with Martin Peter (DIE HAUT) and Yoyo Röhm. 2004 „Morphosa Harmonia“ with Toby Dammit (THE RESIDENTS, Stephan Eicher, IGGY AND THE STOOGES) and guest musicians. The unique social, political, and economic conditions of West Berlin during the 1980s created a distinct urban environment that is reflected in the band’s music. The city has been preserved by Einstürzende Neubauten in the form of sound recordings, and conserved in the unique instruments originally found by the band on the streets of West Berlin.

  • Laura Harker & Paul Sullivan on Nick Cave and the 80S East

Here, the noise of the traffic recedes and the street’s charms surge subtly into focus: fashion boutiques and indie cafés tucked into the ground floors of 19th Century Altbauten, the elegantly run-down Kino Babylon and the dark and seductive cocktail bar Würgeengel, the “exterminating angel”, a name borrowed from a surrealist film by luis Buñuel. It all looked very different in the 80s of course, when the Berlin Wall stood just under a kilometre away and the façades of these houses – now expensively renovated and worth a pretty penny – were still pockmarked by World War Two bulletholes. Mostly devoid of baths, the interiors heated by coal, their inhabitants – mostly Turkish immigrants – shivered and shuffled their way through the Berlin winter. 12 13 It was during this pre-Wende milieu that a tall, skinny and largely unknown Australian musician named Nicholas Edward Cave moved into no. 11. Aside from brief spells in apartments on naumannstraße (Schöneberg), yorckstraße, and nearby Oranienstraße, Cave spent the bulk of his seven on-and-off years in Berlin living in a tiny apartment alongside filmmaker and musician Christoph Dreher, founder of local outfit Die Haut. It was in this house that Cave wrote the lyrics and music for several Birthday Party and Bad Seeds albums, penned his debut novel (And The Ass Saw The Angel) and wielded a sizeable influence over Kreuzberg’s burgeoning post-punk scene.

  • Kid Congo Powers Double Record Release Party
KID CONGO POWERS DOUBLE RECORD RELEASE PARTY KID CONGO POWERS DOUBLE RECORD RELEASE PARTY Tonic, March 3, 2006 Kid Congo Powers is celebrating the release of two albums on March 3, 2006 at Tonic. The first, Solo Cholo, is a career-spanning compilation focusing on the legendary guitarist’s work as a vocalist and songwriter from 1985 to the present. The second, Philosophy and Underwear, is the debut recording of his current New York band, Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds - in which Kid not only sings, but also plays blistering dual guitars with ace Jack Martin (Knoxville Girls, Honeymoon Killers, etc.). After twenty-five years in the recording business (The Cramps’ Psychedelic Jungle was 1981), these two albums are the first full-length recordings that focus on Kid’s songs. The event also marks New York Night Train (www.newyorknighttrain.com) webzine’s debut as a record label. For this momentous occasion Kid has gathered an all-star cast of collaborators, friends, and favorites that will amount to one of the most unusual assemblages of underground figures in downtown history. The headliner is of course Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds. The Birds will also back up Thalia Zedek (ex-Come, Live Skull, Uzi, etc.) on a few Gun Club numbers (Zedek is the vocalist who reminds Kid most of Jeffrey Lee Pierce). Another highlight of the evening is the reunion of the original New York version of Congo Norvell – Kid, Sally Norvell (actress, ex-Norvells, Prohibition, etc.), Jim Sclavunos (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Vanity Set, ex-Sonic Youth, Cramps, etc.), Paul Wallfisch (Botanica, ex-Firewater, Love and Rockets, etc.), and Brian Emrich (film composer, ex-Foetus, Toasters, etc.).

Once the effects of the new wave were fully absorbed, it became apparent that the world of singer-songwriters would never be the same again. A conceptual mood had taken over the scene, and that mood's predecessors were precisely the Bob Dylans, the Neil Youngs, the Leonard Cohens, the Tim Buckleys, the Joni Mitchells, who had not been the most popular stars of the 1970s. Instead, they became the reference point for a new generation of "auteurs". Women, in particular, regained the status of philosophical beings (and not only disco-divas or cute front singers) that they had enjoyed with the works of Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Suzy Gottlieb, better known as Phranc (1), was the (Los Angeles-based) songwriter who started the whole acoustic folk revival with her aptly-titled Folksinger (? 1984/? 1985 - nov 1985), whose protest themes and openly homosexual confessions earned her the nickname of "all-american jewish-lesbian folksinger". She embodied the historic meaning of that movement because she was a punkette (notably in Nervous Gender) before she became a folksinger, and because she continued to identify, more than anyone else, with her post- feminist and AIDS-stricken generation in elegies such as Take Off Your Swastika (1989) and Outta Here (1991).

Roberta Smith for The New York Times The Orchestra of Futurist Noise Intoners is the only complete replica of futurist composer/sound artist Luigi Russolo’s legendary intonarumori orchestra. The orchestra tours worldwide, presenting concerts that feature historical and new works commissioned from an all-star cast of experimental composers, some performing live alongside this orchestra of raucous mechanical synthesizers. The orchestra’s composers include Sonic Youth’s founding guitarist Lee Ranaldo, seminal composer/vocalist Joan La Barbara, Einstürzende Neubauten frontman and Nick Cave collaborator Blixa Bargeld, avant-garde saxophonist John Butcher, Deep Listening pioneer Pauline Oliveros, Faith No More and Mr. Bungle vocalist Mike Patton, avant-garde musician Elliott Sharp, and composer/vocalist Jennifer Walshe collaborating with late composer and film/video artist Tony Conrad, among others. Supervising Bay Area craftsman Keith Carey, Chessa succeeded in recreating for the first time Russolo’s earliest intonarumori orchestra, originally unveiled in Milan in the Summer of 1913 (16 instruments—8 noise families of 1-3 instruments each, in various registers).
