This breakout series, which was created and written by Kevin Williamson, literally changed the landscape of television programming aimed for a younger generation at the turn of the millennium. During this time, Humes also shined in the emotionally charged USA TV movie “The Stalking of Laurie Show” based on a true story. She portrayed Hazel Show, the grieving mother of a Pennsylvania teenager, played by actress Jennifer Finnigan, who was brutally murdered out of jealousy by the high school prom queen. The following year she played the much more lighthearted mother in the very popular Disney Channel movie, “Motocrossed.” On the edgy HBO series “Luck,” produced by Michael Mann in 2012, Hume secured a recurring role as an insurance scam artist. Also in 2012 – but on a much lighter note – she appeared in the Hallmark Channel Original Movie “Matchmaker Santa,” playing a very cheerful but scheming mother. This was followed by a role on Lifetime’s TV movie “The Girl He Met Online,” in which she played the physically, mentally and emotionally abused mother of an adopted teenage daughter. Not only has Hume guest starred in dozens of episodic TV shows, but she also worked in the commercial world during her early career. She had a four-year contract as spokeswoman for Tropicana Orange Juice, as well as a three-year contract with Quaker Oats. Second only to acting is her passion for dance. She has been married to Hollywood soundman Raul A. Bruce for over 20 years and together they have shared their home in Los Angeles with many adopted four-legged children. Their current “daughter” is a hound dog mix rescued from the San Francisco ASPCA named Bailey. # # # KIX BROOKS (Arthur Walters) – Kix Brooks was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he hit the ground running and has never slowed down. They have sold more than 30 million records, won more than 75 major industry awards and have had 20 #1 hit songs. In 2006, Brooks took over the hosting reins of the long-running syndicated radio program, American Country Countdown, where every week he counts country music’s Top 30 songs. The broadcast industry has taken note and honored him with the CMA National Broadcast Personality of the Year Award in 2009, 2011 and 2013, making him the first person to ever win a CMA Award in both the artist and broadcast categories. The extremely popular residency continues to sell out and be a fan favorite in Las Vegas. # # # -- HALLMARK CHANNEL -- .

One need only think of Old Testament scripture; Shakespeare's Hamlet; Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill or the TV series Revenge, and we immediately conjure up images of a protagonist striving to seek justice to avenge a heinous wrong committed against them. These texts, and others like it, speak to that which is ingrained in our human spirit about not only holding others responsible for their actions, but also about retaliation as payback. This article seeks to problematise the way the popular revenge narrative effectively constructs the vendetta as a guilty pleasure through which the audience can vicariously gain satisfaction, while at the same time perpetuates law's rhetoric that personal desires for vengeance are to be repressed and denied.

A MODERN FAMILY: THE PERFORMANCE OF “FAMILY” AND FAMILIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES by Jennifer M. Fogel A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

  • Emily's Hectic Career Leaves Little Time to Visit Her Home and Family
Forever Emily Emily’s hectic career leaves little time to visit her home and family Emily VanCamp moved away from her Port Perry circle of friends and acquaintances in the sixth grade of French Emersion at R.H. Cornish Public School, but now at age 20 she likes noth- ing more than popping home to visit her mom and dad, Cindy and Robert, sisters Katie, Molly and Alison, and extended family and friends whenever she can squeeze the time from her hectic schedule. “I just love to come home to touch base with my family,” she said in an interview with Focus On Scugog during her visit home. “They’re this constant in my life. If I got a big head, they’d burst my bubble pretty quickly.” At the age of 12, Emily moved to Montreal to pursue her ballet training and then on to Vancouver to work in a short-lived WB Network series called ‘Glory Days’ (2002). By that time she already had credits for playing the young Jackie Bouvier in the TV movie, ‘Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis’ (CBS, 2000) and episodes here and there for ‘Are You Afraid Of The Dark’, ‘Radio Active’, ‘All Souls’ and ‘Dice’ (2000). Around ‘Glory Days’, Emily also made the telepic, ‘The Redeemer’ (USA, 2002) with Matthew Modine and ‘The House On Turk Street’ (WB, 2002) with Samuel L. Jackson and Milla Jovovich. “Glory Days was a wonderful experience,” Emily explains. “Although it didn’t last long, it spun my career into four years with ‘Everwood’, also a WB project.” As Amy Abbott, Emily acquired a devoted following.

It seemed more like two months. At times, even two weeks. Why? Because even though I have worked in TV for more than three decades, I have never seen our industry undergo such extraordinary — and extraordinarily exciting — changes as it has in recent years. Everywhere you turn, the vanguard is disrupting the old guard with an astonishing new technology, an amazing new show, an inspired new way to structure a business deal. This is not to imply that the more established segments of our industry have been pushed aside. On the contrary, the broadcast and cable networks continue to produce terrific work that is heralded by critics and rewarded each year at the Emmys. And broadcast networks still command the largest viewing audience across all of their platforms. With our medium thriving as never before, this is a great time to work in television, and a great time to be part of the Television Academy. Consider the 65th Emmy Awards. The CBS telecast, hosted by the always-entertaining Neil Patrick Harris, drew our largest audience since 2005.

Branding the Family Drama Genre Formations and Critica[ Perspectives on Gilmore Girls AMANDA R. KEELER Before its debut on October 5, 2000, Gilmore Girls had already made television history. According to an article published in American Demo graphics that year, Gilmore Girls was the "first advertiser advocated show" funded by the Family Friendly Programming Forum (FFPF), a group consisting of major U.S. corporations, who offered up a mil lion dollars to "fund 'family-friendly' script development at the WB," the network that in 2006 partnered with UPN to become the CW ("Television" 2000). Taking into consideration other family-friendly dramatic television series aimed at multigenerational audiences on the CW, such as 7th Heaven (1996-2007) and Everwood (2002-6), one might ask how a program about a single, never-married mom (until the final season), raising her daughter, could constitute family-friendly fare. What particular elements of this Amy Sherman-Palladino cre ation led the FFPF to fund its development? And is "family friendly" a viable genre label? In the context of television programming and criti cism, does genre even matter anymore, considering the hybrid nature of most contemporary series? In this chapter I will investigare what critics have written about Gilmore Girls and how the show has been linked to similar programs in terms of genre classification.
