It is often noted that guilds were more than work organizations, and that their religious and social activities made them very like confraternities, but exploring the cultural and ideological side of guilds can be hampered by less surviving evidence. The present article attempts to address this lacuna by using poems written by/for the masons’ guild in fifteenth-century Ghent, taking an interdisciplinary perspective to examine ideals of community, hierarchy and the sacralization of labour from an urban perspective. On 22 September 1420, Coppin de Bake, aged 15 years and 8 days, began an apprenticeship in the masons’ guild in Ghent. His parents, Sanders (also a mason) and Lysbet, entrusted him to the care of Master Coosin Poortier, and gave a silver scale to the guild.1 Coppin’s apprenticeship is the first of many in the Ghent masons’ guild-book, a record of a youth entering a craft community. The guild-book itself is not simply a membership list, rather it is, like a religious institution’s book, part of the culture of memoria,2 and a lens through which to analyse guild-brothers and their values. -

There are those who believe with varying degrees of certainty that there is a historical basis to the story which Eucherius relates, that there did indeed exist a group of Theban soldiers who were executed in the Alps during the early years of the reign of Emperor Herculius Maximianus because they refused, for religious reasons, to obey his commands.2 However their arguments have left many unconvinced. -

David Motiuk П’ята неділя після П’ятидесятниці Fifth Sunday after Pentecost Today’s Gospel is one of the most tragic of any and all of Scripture because it really, in a nutshell, shows how people’s lives are lost. They’re lost by just living their life, not thinking of God, doing what they want to do, and then they die. And most of them will not know what they have missed until the Judgment. What a tragedy. This tragedy is happening in our lives too. Every time that we choose the wrong way, we are like the people or the Geresenes because we are losing an opportunity for sanctity, for blessedness. We must, when we can, do what is right. Because there are so many times we do what is wrong, we must seize upon the moment. The Lord came so that we would no longer be sinners. But we must answer the question every day: What are we to do with Him? Those who do not love God answer it in such a way as to say, Go away. Not in so many words. But in the way they live their lives and their priorities what they think is important and what they do, they say, Go away. Those who love God, they beg Him to stay. So let us be like the Apostles and answer this question as they did. -

Many more Saints and Martyrs have since been entered into this calendar commemorating the heroic faith, the holy deeds, the exemplary lives, and in many cases the glorious deaths of these Milites Christi, or Soldiers of Christ, who gave 1 every fiber of their being to God for His glory, for the sanctification of His Holy Catholic Church, for the conversion of sinners both at home and in partibus infidelium 1, for the salvation of souls, and for the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, even as He had last commanded His holy Apostles: “Euntes ergo docete omnes gentes: baptizantes eos in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Docentes eos servare omnia quæcumque mandavi vobis.” “Going therefore, teach all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” (St. Matthew 28.19-20) While the Martyrology presented is complete, it nevertheless does not present us with great detail concerning the lives of those whose names are forever indited within it, still less the complete circumstances surrounding and leading up to their martyrdom. For greater detail of their lives, the sources now available on the Internet are extensive and we encourage you to explore them.2 As it stands, the Martyrology is eminently suited to a brief daily reflection that will inspire us to greater fervor, even to imitate these conspicuously holy men and women in whatever measure our own state in life affords us through the grace and providence of Almighty God. -

Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: James Rives Bart Ehrman Robert Babcock Zlatko Plese Todd Ochoa © 2016 Pablo Alberto Molina ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Pablo Molina: Paul in Rome: A Case Study On the Formation and Transmission of Traditions (Under the direction of James Rives) Paul is arguably the second most important figure in the history of Christianity. Although much has been written about his stay and martyrdom in Rome, the actual circumstances of these events — unless new evidence is uncovered — must remain obscure. In this dissertation I analyze the matter from a fresh perspective by focusing on the formation and transmission of traditions about Paul’s final days. I begin by studying the Neronian persecution of the year 64 CE, i.e. the immediate historical context in which the earliest traditions were formed. In our records, a documentary gap of over thirty years follows the persecution. Yet we may deduce from chance remarks in texts written ca. 95-120 CE that oral traditions of Paul’s death were in circulation during that period. In chapter 2, I develop a quantitative framework for their contextualization. Research has shown that oral traditions, if not committed to writing, fade away after about eighty years. Only two documents written within that crucial time frame have survived: the book of Acts and the Martyrdom of Paul (MPl).
