Me siento muy orgullosa de formar parte de vuestra vida. Quiero terminar agradeciendo a mi pareja, mi compañero de viaje y mi mejor amigo, Raúl. “Te volvería a decir que sí todos los días de mi vida”. Esta tesis es para ti, por todo y por tanto. Te amo. -5- -6- “Los colores” “En el mundo de los colores, cada uno tiene su forma de ser. Está el verde, el color de la esperanza. Cuando en el mundo de los colores las cosas se ponen mal, pero que muy mal, entonces llega el verde y les dice a los demás: -No perdáis la esperanza. Si no la perdéis, seguro que podemos cambiar las cosas. Y al resto de los colores les entran de nuevo las ganas de luchar para mejorar el mundo. Y el verde es así de divertido porque vive en la hierba, en los mocos de l@s niñ@s yen las crestas de l@s punkis. Al amarillo le encanta alimentar a los demás. Sobre todo vive en el cereal. Lleva mucho tiempo mal repartido y últimamente muta con facilidad. El color naranja, que es un color que da calor. Cuando el resto de colores tienen frío, van donde el naranja y vuelven a estar calentitos. Eso es porque el naranja vive en el sol. (Se parece mucho a la Pipi Calzaslargas). El marrón, que lo pasa fatal porque siempre que ocurre algo malo en el mundo dice: -¡Ha sido marrón! ¡Ha sido marrón! Y el marrón estaba tan harto de comerse marrones que se fue a vivir al bosque. Ahora, cuando los colores están agobiados van con el marrón y se tranquilizan. El rojo, que siempre se está metiendo en líos, líos políticos, líos de amor… vive en el corazón y en el sarampión. El blanco y el negro, que siempre iban juntos, pegados culo con culo, se dedicaban a engañar a los demás. -¡Que viene el blanco! ¡Que viene el blanco!- decían. Pero el blanco se daba la vuelta y… ¡era el negro a quien veían! O al revés. Pero la verdad es que el blanco y el negro no engañaban a nadie, iban siempre juntos porque sabían que todo lo bueno contiene algo malo y que todo lo malo alberga algo bueno. Igual que la sombra y la luz. ¡Ahh, que se me olvidaba! Quedaban dos colores: el rosa y el azul, que eran dos colores muy cariñosos, generosos, fuertes y valientes. Pero al rosa le habían prohibido pensar y decidir, y al azul le habían prohibido llorar y tener miedo. Y, por si fuera poco, al rosa le habían dicho: -“Tú solo jugarás con muñecas” Y al azul le habían dicho: -7- -“Tú solo jugarás con la pelota” Y resulta que al azul le encantaban las muñecas y el rosa se lo pasaba genial con la pelota. De manera que aprendieron a escaparse, a cambiarse los juegos, a poder llorar y sentir el miedo, a poder pensar. Pero entonces llegaban los incoloros (la amargura les había borrado el color) y se dedicaban a fastidiar y a acosar al rosa y al azul. -¡Tú, azul, no juegues más con muñecas! ¡Deja de llorar! ¡Y tú, rosa, deja ya el fútbol y deja de pensar! Vete a casa a limpiar Y así muchos, muchos años, tantos años que siglos, y tantos siglos que milenios. El rosa y el azul estaban asustados por los incoloros, cansados de no poder ser como les gustaba, hartos de que los trataran mal. Así que un día decidieron escaparse. Al azul le entró mucho miedo: -¡Nos van a pillar, nos van a pillar! Pero el rosa le dijo: -Que nooooo, no te preocupes, se me ha ocurrido una idea genial: vamos a mezclarnos. Si nos mezclamos saldrá un nuevo color y nunca nos encontrarán. Y así fue como salió el lila. Por eso el color lila es un color muy cariñoso y muy generoso, al que le encanta cuidar a los demás, muy listo y muy valiente, que cuando tiene miedo llora y se le pasa, y además juega al fútbol, a las muñecas y a todo lo que le da la gana. Es por eso que el lila vive en todas las personas que eligen, libremente, vivir sus infinitas mezclas.     Troubadours, trouvères. Lyric poets or poet-musicians of France in the 12th and 13th centuries. It is customary to describe as troubadours those poets who worked in the south of France and wrote in Provençal, the langue d’oc , whereas the trouvères worked in the north of France and wrote in French, the langue d’oil . I. Troubadour poetry 1. Introduction. The troubadours were the earliest and most significant exponents of the arts of music and poetry in medieval Western vernacular culture. Their influence spread throughout the Middle Ages and beyond into French (the trouvères, see §II below), German, Italian, Spanish, English and other European languages. The first centre of troubadour song seems to have been Poitiers, but the main area extended from the Atlantic coast south of Bordeaux in the west, to the Alps bordering on Italy in the east. There were also ‘schools’ of troubadours in northern Italy itself and in Catalonia. Their influence, of course, spread much more widely. Pillet and Carstens (1933) named 460 troubadours; about 2600 of their poems survive, with melodies for roughly one in ten.     The Song from the Singer: Personification, Embodiment, and Anthropomorphization in Troubadour Lyric Anne Levitsky Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Anne Levitsky All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Song from the Singer: Personification, Embodiment, and Anthropomorphization in Troubadour Lyric Anne Levitsky This dissertation explores the relationship of the act of singing to being a human in the lyric poetry of the troubadours, traveling poet-musicians who frequented the courts of contemporary southern France in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. In my dissertation, I demonstrate that the troubadours surpass traditionally-held perceptions of their corpus as one entirely engaged with themes of courtly romance and society, and argue that their lyric poetry instead both displays the influence of philosophical conceptions of sound, and critiques notions of personhood and sexuality privileged by grammarians, philosophers, and theologians. I examine a poetic device within troubadour songs that I term ‘personified song’—an occurrence in the lyric tradition where a performer turns toward the song he/she is about to finish singing and directly addresses it. This act lends the song the human capabilities of speech, motion, and agency. It is through the lens of the ‘personified song’ that I analyze this understudied facet of troubadour song. Chapter One argues that the location of personification in the poetic text interacts with the song’s melodic structure to affect the type of personification the song undergoes, while exploring the ways in which singing facilitates the creation of a body for the song.

Far less can be determined regarding their musical contributions, for, despite several references within the trobairitz corpus suggesting sung performances, only one melody has been attributed with some certainty to a trobairitz: "A chantar m'er de so que no volria" by the Comtessa de Dia. In this thesis, I explore the possibility of ascribing a second melody to a trobairitz. The tune in question accompanies the tenso "S'ie.us qier cosseill, bell'ami'Alamanda," a poem of debate ostensibly composed between the troubadour Giraut de Borneil and a donzella, or demoisel Alamanda. Both the melody and the text of the tenso have been transmitted in the troubadour chansonniers solely under Giraut's name. Yet the earliest chansonniers were not compiled until the mid-thirteenth century, an era when Giraut's status as a troubadour had reached legendary proportions. It is therefore not inconceivable that the prestige of Alamanda's literary partner might have eclipsed her contributions to the tenso. Nevertheless, it is the attribution of the tenso solely to Giraut that has persisted in the standard modern anthologies of troubadour lyric.

    Medieval Love Songs MUHL-M295 Spring semester 2021 Classes MWF 1:30-2:20 Note that this is a synchronous online course. In other words, we will meet on Zoom during the official class period. See below for more details. Prerequisites Good standing in Honors program, or (for medieval studies students) permission of instructor. Note that musical background, or the ability to read music, is not required! Brief course overview “I thought I knew so much of love, and I know so little....” These words could have been written by any number of songwriters in our time, but they came from the pen of Bernart de Ventadorn, a thirteenth-century troubadour. In this seminar we will explore the various ways love is expressed in the middle ages. Topics will range from the songs of troubadours and Minnesinger to the pseudo-autobiographical narrator of Guillaume de Machaut’s songs and narratives, who continually fails at love but succeeds in writing about love. We will consider not only fin’amors, the “courtly love” that worships the lady on a pedestal, but also the more earthly shepherdess of the pastourelle, and the divine love that is given to the Virgin Mary. We will trace the roots of medieval love in the Song of Songs, the poetry of Ovid, and the Arabic texts that influenced Iberian culture. Through the lens of love songs of various sorts, we can begin to understand medieval culture, and in the process think more critically about our own. Course objectives The main goal of this course is for students to understand better the medieval world, and to some extent its impact on the modern world, through the study of a group of texts (with and without music) that deal with the subject of love(s).
