They have no place in what you are writing, and so if you are young, you write them in a notebook for future use. And you never use them because they are sparkling and alive like colored pebbles on a wave-washed shore. It’s impossible not to fill your pockets with them. But when you get home, they are dry and colorless. I’d like to pin down a few while they are still wet.” John Steinbeck think we’ve pinned down some of the brightest and loveliest ideas and images in this volume. This is by far one of our most diverse issues, showcasing research in not only the humanities; but also in the disciplines of Mathematics, Criminal Justice, Social Work, Chemistry, Psychology, Iand Theater Arts. At The Review we aren’t the types to sit and watch the paint dry, but rather admire it for its brilliance and ability to cling to the surface, despite its fresh application. And, although these students will move on and their research will pale in comparison to what they will discover (and even publish) in the future, these pages will remain forever wet and glossy. Bridgewater State College Remember Johnny? Johnny Boy? Your kid brother? The Undergraduate Review This thing of ours. A Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Work Uncle Junior: I was involved with that? Tony Soprano: You and my dad. You two ran North Jersey. Uncle Junior: We did? Volume I 2003-2004 Tony Soprano: Yeah. Uncle Junior: Hmm. Well, that’s nice. Inaugural Volume From The Sopranos ’ve had the privilege of watching this journal become “this thing of ours” since day one. We’ve gotten better at putting the journal together every time. It’s a testament to the faculty, students, and staff who are responsible for the journal that you can’t actually tell that. Pretty much Iafter our admittedly rough effort in Volume One, this journal has always looked top notch. After that first issue, when Stacy and I were spread out on the floor of the Honors Center (no Office of Undergraduate Research back then), her daughter Meg helping us paper clip together bundles of stuff to go here and there, we knew one thing: we had to do justice to the student writers and researchers that we published in The Review. We just had to. And so we did. The journal passed out of my hands to some extent after the first two years, but Stacy was always there. With great faith in the writers and readers of The Review, she has made this journal the exceptional contribution to the scholarly culture of campus that it is. For me, it feels right and true that in my last year as Director Stacy and I would team up one more time. But, now, at the end, I’m not sure what to say. There are only so many superlatives you can use to describe students and faculty, only so many ways to say thank you to the higher ups. What I really want to say is just this: when I quote “this thing of ours”? I really mean that. This beautiful book is all of ours. And it will last long after those of us who make up the “we” of this present moment are long gone. I remember that when I look at the new books coming out of the boxes—that new book smell in my nose: It’s not just that The Review will outlast me in this job. It will outlast me at this college. And that’s, well, that’s nice. VI The Adrian Tinsley Program Grants section contains the results of the work of students who worked under the guidance of a faculty mentor during the ATP Summer Grant program. The opportunity for this ten-week research experience is open to all undergraduates, including both students with outstanding academic histories and students who show great promise. Grants were approved based on the quality of student proposals, and you will see the results of the extraordinary efforts these students produced.     Bloomsburg Investment Group Equity Analysis The Procter & Gamble Company (PG) Analyst: Gerrick Hardy, Class of 2021 Trevor Luzi, Mackenzie Gross, Class of 2022 Bloomsburg Investment Group Opinion: After our group's thorough analysis, we believe it is in the best interest of the group if our holding in Procter & Gamble (PG) is partially liquidated. Although our group remains bullish about the company, we think taking some profits from PG's recent run-up and allocating funds elsewhere in the sector would be most beneficial. While the company has provided strong organic growth in each of the two previous quarters, a number of headwinds remain in the way which will likely restrict future growth. A stronger U.S. Dollar has essentially offset the organic revenue growth, and the rise in transportation costs and commodity prices has and will likely continue to squeeze the margins of PG. With consumer tastes trending towards less expensive generic brands, customers may not respond favorably to recent price increases of some of Procter & Gamble’s largest brands. Our sector believes PG is currently trading at a premium that will not be satisfied with future growth. Despite all of this, we are still bullish because of the high dividend yield that the company has increased for 62 consecutive years, wide array of brand offerings, and brand loyalty and recognition, among other factors. Considering cross-current risks that exist in the macroeconomic environment and the potential of an upcoming recession or economic downturn, Procter & Gamble will continue to provide stable growth and hedge our portfolio.     The Cancer and the Cure: Security, State and Power in Mexico De Rosa, F. & Godeghesi, C1. Abstract This paper aims to understand the role of the Mexican state in a drug war context and the impact of Mexican drug policies to its institutional legitimacy. In this sense, we will discuss how the institution adopted security policies as counter measures concerning the narco-traffic. Such militarized action adopted by the Mexican government, in addition to the support offered by its neighbor United States, echoes how society imagines the use of force within public policies. In this sense, the main question is how the use of violence becomes central in the public policies’ formulation and why it represents an attempt to re-claim power and legitimacy. We will assess how this conception of public policy formulation does not encompass the dynamics in which violence emerges. This effort regards ultimately the final manifestation through which actors conduct violence, focusing in a unilateral conception of monopoly ownership. The paper will offer a critical discussion focused on violence and its role as an instrument of power and as a main part of the monopoly of state control. Our central argument is that the, Mexican government takes for granted other power relations implementing those policies. The first club outside Ulster was Dublin Association Football Club which was formed in 1883. At the time, the Irish Football Association (IFA) was the governing body. Based in Belfast, it found it difficult to promote football throughout the country. This led to the formation of the Leinster Football Association in 1892 as the game became more popular in the area. However, there was always a feeling among clubs from outside the Belfast area that the IFA favoured Ulster based clubs-especially when selecting sides for international matches. Despite this, it was not until after the 1916 Rising and the rise of Nationalism that southern affiliates, such as the Leinster FA, took an aggressive approach in their dealings with the IFA. The clubs often threatened to break away, and in early 1921, Bohemians, St. James's Gate and Shelbourne all withdrew from the Irish League, though all three sides decided to remain involved in Cup competitions.
