6 October 2016 Dear Candidate, As Americans Across the Country 6 October 2016 Dear Candidate, As Americans across the country prepare to elect a new President and Congress, the Copyright Alliance and CreativeFuture – two organizations that strongly support creative communities by working to protect creativity and encourage respect for copyright law – have partnered on letters (attached here) and a Change.org petition, to ensure that the views of the creative communities are heard. Signed by over 35,000 creatives, audience members, fans, and consumers, the letters recognize that the internet is a powerful and democratizing force, but also stress the need for a strong copyright system that rewards creativity and promotes a healthy creative economy. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative or libertarian, strong and effective copyright is not a partisan issue, but rather one that benefits our entire country. The letters and petition discuss the complementary relationship between a strong copyright system, free expression, creativity, innovation, and technology. The signers affirmed: • We embrace the internet as a powerful democratizing force for creative industries and the world at large. • We embrace a strong copyright system that rewards creativity and promotes a healthy creative economy. • We proudly assert that copyright promotes and protects free speech. • Copyright should allow creative communities to safeguard their rights against those who would use the internet to undermine creativity. • Creative communities must be part of the conversation and stand up for creativity. Sincerely, Ruth Vitale Keith Kupferschmid CEO, CreativeFuture CEO, Copyright Alliance Open Letter to 2016 Political Candidates We are members of the creative community. While our political views are diverse, as creatives, there are core principles on which we can all agree. And we appreciate the opportunity to share our views with our country’s current and future leaders. We embrace the internet as a powerful democratizing force for our world and for creative industries. We recognize its ability to inspire positive change and improve lives. In our creative industries, the internet has helped to advance creativity by removing barriers to entry for newcomers, fostering a dialogue with fans and audiences, and providing numerous additional ways to reach them. The internet holds great potential to expand creativity and free expression. We embrace a strong copyright system that rewards creativity and promotes a healthy creative economy. The incredible cultural and economic value that the internet delivers to billions of users is based in very large part on the efforts of creative content makers whose livelihoods depend on being compensated for their efforts. Internet platforms are making massive profits from creative contributions to the internet’s growth. It is not too much to ask that content creators should be able to share in the value they provide. We proudly assert that copyright promotes and protects free speech. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression go hand in hand with the freedom to create and to preserve the value and integrity of what one creates. The copyright clause of the Constitution is not in conflict with the First Amendment; indeed, the Supreme Court has called copyright the “engine of free expression” and copyright law has "built-in free speech safeguards." To creative people, self-expression is deeply personal. It is at the heart of everything creatives do. We view any effort to diminish the rights of creatives in the name of “free speech” as cynical and dishonest. Copyright should protect creatives from those who would use the internet to undermine creativity. The internet can be a great tool for creatives just as it can be a tool for science, education, health care, and many other disciplines. However, when misused, it can harm creativity and stifle freedom of expression. Our current and future leaders recognize that a safe and secure internet benefits us all. And all parties recognize the importance of strong copyright protections in their technology policy platforms because protecting copyright and internet freedom are both critically important and complementary—they are not mutually exclusive. A truly free internet, like any truly free community, is one where people respect the rights of others and can engage in legitimate activities safely—and where those who do not are held accountable under law by their peers. Creatives must be part of the conversation and stand up for creativity. Some organizations and advocates, who in many cases are funded by online platforms, repeatedly claim to be pro-creatives and pro-audience to mask their own self-serving agenda. They denigrate or block effective efforts to preserve and promote creative content, including enforcement of existing laws and voluntary industry initiatives. The creative community is rightfully wary of any company or organization that claims to be "against piracy" when their actions do not match their words. There is no “left” or “right” when it comes to respecting copyright. The creative community stands united in support of a copyright system that will continue to make the United States the global leader in the creative arts and the global paradigm for free expression. Our copyright system is not perfect but, like democracy, it is better than the alternatives. It works. We urge our leaders to uphold America’s commitment to the rights of creatives to determine when and how their works are shared in the global marketplace. 6 October 2016 2 CreativeFuture Open Letter Sponsors Patric Abaravich Rick Berg Bill Clark Danny Abeckaster Alec Berg Jane Clark Kate Abernathy Albert Berger Champ Clark Dwayne Adway Richard Berger Hayden Clement Noor Ahmed Scott Bernard Christopher Cleveland Jennifer Ahn Remy Berne Howard Cohen Eric Aleynikov Tom Berne Bruce Cohen Gary Allard Claire Best Tommy Cole Bill Allen Tony Bill Bill Condon Gilbert Alloul Michael Birnbaum John Connor Jon Amiel Todd Black Steve Cooper Alan Amman Barry Blaustein Charlie Corwin Dene Anderburg Terra Bliss Julie Costanzo Christian Anderson Julia Bloch Randy Couture Eric Anderson Jason Blum Cindy Cowan Terri Apple Margaret Bodde Pierce Cravens Steve Aredas Craig Bolotin Keith Crosby Alan Arkatov Robert Bookman Richard Crowe Audrey Arkins Bill Borden Tim Curnen Marilyn R. Samoan Submission Machines: Grappling with Representations of Samoan Identity in Professional Wrestling Theo Plothe1 Savannah State University [email protected] Amongst the myriad of characters to step foot in the squared circle, perhaps no ethnic group has been as celebrated or marginalized as the Samoans who have made their names in professional wrestling. The discussion of Samoan identity in the context of sport has examined Maori identity and masculinity in New Zealand, among other topics, but there has yet to be work which considers Samoans within professional wrestling. This research investigates Samoan identity through a content analysis of televised wrestling matches. This research identifies six primary stereotypes under which Samoan identity is portrayed. These portrayals of Samoan characters, I argue, flatten the representation of this ethnic group within wrestling and culture at large. Keywords: Samoans, identity, representation, gimmicks Introduction Among the myriad of characters to step foot in the squared circle, perhaps no ethnic group has been as celebrated or marginalized as the Samoans who have made their names in professional wrestling. This research investigates the identity of Samoans within professional wrestling, and the different ways they are constructed and presented to audiences. “Gimmicks,” characters portrayed by a wrestler “resulting in the sum of fictional elements, attire and wrestling ability” (Oliva and Calleja 3) utilized by Samoans have run the gamut from the wild uncivilized savage, to the sumo (both in villainous Japanese and comically absurd iterations), to the ultra-cool mogul who wears silk shirts and fancy shoes. Their ability to cut promos, an important facet of the modern gimmick allowing wrestlers to address their opponents and storylines, varies widely as well, but all lie within their Samoan identity.

  • International School Trips: a Critical Analysis of Multiple Stakeholder Perspectives
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TRIPS: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF MULTIPLE STAKEHOLDER PERSPECTIVES Margie Campbell-Price A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand 2014 ABSTRACT For many decades school groups have actively engaged in experiences outside the classroom. More recently, school-led tourism has expanded to include international school trips especially undertaken by schools in developed, (Western), neoliberal nations. Whilst these trips traditionally focused on foreign language and cultural learning they have diversified to include a wide range of curriculum-related subjects and extra-curricular activities. However, the growth in participation in these trips has not been matched by academic attention or analysis. This thesis addresses the dearth of research by exploring the justifications, motivations and experiences behind international school trips and how learning is perceived and positioned within these trips. The inclusion of the active voice of multiple stakeholders (i.e., young people, their parents and school leaders) is a new way of appraising international school trip experiences. This qualitative study involved twenty-three focus group interviews (six with parents, nine with young people and eight with school leaders), carried out in six New Zealand secondary schools that had groups either preparing for or recently returned from an international trip. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data and three global themes relating to the aim of the thesis were identified. The findings corroborate the existing literature that learning is an integral part of international field trips and illustrate a detailed understanding of the nature of learning within these experiences. All three stakeholder groups used learning, at least in part, to justify taking part in these experiences.

TAIPEI AMERICAN SCHOOL VOLUME Summer 15 2014 TASTAS AlumniAlumni NewsNews A Message from the Superintendent hrough the lens of securing a strong foundation, establishing Toutstanding programs, recruiting and retaining the highest quality personnel, and communicating the value of the TAS experience, alumni watch their institution grow. Colin Powel, the first African American appointed as the U.S. Secretary of State, instructed, “Have a vision. Be demanding.” We have demanded a great deal to bring the vision for our students into focus. With a firm financial foundation in place, we have been able to erect beautiful, green facilities that have enhanced programs and student learning across all three divisions. The Tiger Center provides the educational resources that we have come to expect from a world class fitness center. The construction of the Black Box Theater has already enriched our performing arts program in the upper school. By moving upper school classrooms into the new buildings, we have been able to expand our middle and lower school facilities. The middle school, now with a stronger educational culture and identity, extends vertically over four floors. Like the middle school, the lower school is now characterized by its customized, dedicated learning spaces. A growth in space means a growth in programs. Most impressive is the introduction of a middle school competitive sports program. This comprehensive competitive sports program prepares our students to be capable athletes and gracious competitors at the upper school level and in life. Our programs continue to excel in other areas as well. Public speaking, serves as an example of program excellence that has grown for TAS students.
