    ABSTRACT Gregarine Parasitism in Dragonfly Populations of Central Texas with an Assessment of Fitness Costs in Erythemis simplicicollis Jason L. Locklin, Ph.D. Mentor: Darrell S. Vodopich, Ph.D. Dragonfly parasites are widespread and frequently include gregarines (Phylum Apicomplexa) in the gut of the host. Gregarines are ubiquitous protozoan parasites that infect arthropods worldwide. More than 1,600 gregarine species have been described, but only a small percentage of invertebrates have been surveyed for these apicomplexan parasites. Some consider gregarines rather harmless, but recent studies suggest otherwise. Odonate-gregarine studies have more commonly involved damselflies, and some have considered gregarines to rarely infect dragonflies. In this study, dragonfly populations were surveyed for gregarines and an assessment of fitness costs was made in a common and widespread host species, Erythemis simplicicollis. Adult dragonfly populations were surveyed weekly at two reservoirs in close proximity to one another and at a flow-through wetland system. Gregarine prevalences and intensities were compared within host populations between genders, among locations, among wing loads, and through time. Host fitness parameters measured included wing load, egg size, clutch size, and total egg count. Of the 37 dragonfly species surveyed, 14 species (38%) hosted gregarines. Thirteen of those species were previously unreported as hosts. Gregarine prevalences ranged from 2% – 52%. Intensities ranged from 1 – 201. Parasites were aggregated among their hosts. Gregarines were found only in individuals exceeding a minimum wing load, indicating that gregarines are likely not transferred from the naiad to adult during emergence. Prevalence and intensity exhibited strong seasonality during both years at one of the reservoirs, but no seasonal trend was detected at the wetland.

The species studied were those used in a published phylogenetic analysis based on chloroplast DNA regions. Four additional Polypodiaceae species were examined for comparative purposes. We used scanning electron microscopy to image 580 specimens of spores from 29 species of the 48 recognised taxa. Four discrete and ten continuous characters were scored for each species and optimised on to the previously published molecular tree. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that verrucae width/verrucae length and verrucae width/spore length index and outline were the most important morphological characters. The first two axes explain, respectively, 56.3% and 20.5% of the total variance. Regular depressed and irregular prominent verrucae were present in derived species. However, the morphology does not support any molecular clades. According to our analyses, the evolutionary pathway of the ornamentation of the spores is represented by depressed irregularly verrucae to folded perispore to depressed regular verrucae to irregularly prominent verrucae. Majapahit No. 62, Mataram 83125, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia Tlp/Fax. 0370 646506, email: *[email protected] Abstrak Lumut Kerak merupakan simbiosis antara fungi dan alga atau cyanobacterium. yang bermanfaat sebagai bioresource, biondikator serta studi ekosistem. Dalam penelitian ini, beberapa aspek lumut kerak akan diteliti meliputi komposisi jenis, beserta jumlah individu tiap jenisnya dan nilai keanekaragaman lumut kerak. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif eksploratif yang telah dilaksanakan pada bulan Oktober-Desember 2016. Pengambilan data dilakukan menggunakan metode stratified random sampling dengan menempatkan 11 unit sampel berbentuk persegi. Pada tiap unit sampel, dipilih 12 pohon yang masing-masing akan dipasang 4 grid berukuran 50x10 cm. Identifikasi sampel dilakukan dengan mencocokkan (profile matching) ciri morfologi serta hasil spot test dengan buku identifikasi. Nilai keanekaragaman lumut kerak dianalisis dengan menggunakan Lichen Diversity Value serta Indeks Shannon dan Pielou. Dari hasil penelitian, 4 spesies ditemukan dari kelas Lecanoromycetes dan kelas Arthoniomycetes. Satu spesies tidak teridentifikasi. Nilai LDVj tertinggi 13,5 dari unit sampel blok perlindungan. Indeks nilai Shannon sebesar 0,57 dan Pielou sebesar 0,32. Kata kunci : TWA Suranadi, Lumut Kerak, Identifikasi, Nilai Keanekaragaman Abstract Lichen is a symbiosis between fungi and algae or cyanobacterium, which are useful as bioresource, bioindicator and ecosystem studies. In this research, several aspects of lichen will be examined including species composition along with the number of individuals of each species and the value of lichen diversity. This research is descriptive explorative which was conducted in October-December 2016.
