To advance in the understanding of chromosomal organization of multigene families and B chromosome structure and evolution, the distribution of rRNA and H3 histone genes were analyzed in the standard karyotype and B chromosome of three populations of the grasshopper Rhammatocerus brasiliensis. Results: The location of major rDNA was coincident with the previous analysis for this species. On the other hand, the 5S rDNA mapped in almost all chromosomes of the standard complement (except in the pair 11) and in the B chromosome, showing a distinct result from other populations previously analyzed. Besides the spreading of 5S rDNA in the genome of R. brasiliensis it was also observed multiple sites for H3 histone genes, being located in the same chromosomal regions of 5S rDNAs, including the presence of the H3 gene in the B chromosome. Conclusions: Due to the intense spreading of 5S rRNA and H3 histone genes in the genome of R. -

Accepted 16 December, 2011 Acridoidea is a superfamily within the Orthoptera order that comprises a group of short-horned insects commonly called grasshoppers. Grasshopper and locust species are major pests of grasslands and crops in all continents except Antarctica. Economically and historically, locusts and grasshoppers are two of the most destructive agricultural pests. The most important locust species belong to the genus Schistocerca and populate America, Africa, and Asia. Some grasshoppers considered to be important pests are the Melanoplus species, Camnula pellucida in North America, Brachystola magna and Sphenarium purpurascens in northern and central Mexico, and Oedaleus senegalensis and Zonocerus variegatus in Africa. Previous studies have classified these species based on specific characteristics. This review includes six headings. The first discusses the main species of grasshoppers and locusts; the second focuses on their worldwide distribution; the third describes their biology and life cycle; the fourth refers to climatic factors that facilitate the development of grasshoppers and locusts; the fifth discusses the action or reaction of grasshoppers and locusts to external or internal stimuli and the sixth refers to elements to design management strategies with emphasis on prevention. -

Based on detailed examinations of museum specimens and high-resolution digital images, we have produced an illustrated key to 21 Pyrgomorphidae genera known from the Indian subcontinent. This new identification key will become a useful tool for increasing our knowledge on the taxonomy of grasshoppers in this important biogeographic region. Lubber Grasshoppers Subfamily Romaleinae This group is sometimes considered to be a separate family, Romaleidae. It differs from the other subfamilies in having a spine at the tip of the hind tibiae. Lubber grasshoppers bear a spine ventrally between the front legs, as is found in spurthroated grasshoppers, subfamily Cyrtacanthacridinae. Lubber grasshoppers are large, colorful, and usually bear short wings. The shape of the head, though variable, is usually broadly rounded. The hind femora are enlarged. When disturbed, lubber grasshoppers may hiss and spread their wings. Both the front wings and hind wings are brightly colored. Only a few species occur in North America, al- though many are known from South America. Only one species is known from the eastern United States: Romalea R. microptera (Beauvois) Romalea microptera (Beauvois) Eastern lubber grasshopper Identification. This species is also sometimes known as Romalea guttata (Houttuyn). Despite the confusion in the scientific literature concerning the correct name, Floridians have little trouble rec- ognizing this insect. It is undoubtedly the best-known species of grasshopper in Eastern lubber grasshopper (female) Florida, and one of the most readily rec- ognized insects. The nymphs are mostly black with a narrow median yellow stripe, and red on the head and front legs. Their color pattern is distinctly different from the adult stage, so they commonly are mistaken for a different species. Young tend to be gregarious and dispersive. This commonly brings them into contact with people and gardens, accounting for their familiarity. On occasion they are abundant enough to damage citrus or vegetables. They commonly seek out and defo- liate amaryllis and related plants in flower gardens. -
