It seems incredible that the landscape dominated nowadays by these massive peaks, 250 million years ago was covered by a tropical sea called Tethys. This sea marks the birthplace of the Dolomites, as we are often reminded by fossils and remains of calcified coral reef.

“Pale Mountains”: this was the name used to describe the Dolomites for quite some time until about 200 years ago, when the French geologist Déodat de Dolomieu studied and analyzed the composition of the rock. Thus they inherited his name. The Val Gardena Dolomites em- body a mysterious and legendary world that continues to captivate even beyond its initial impact. The towering Sassolungo stands out, reaching 3,181 meters. Its name derives from the slender and long south wall (Italian: sasso=stone, lungo=long). United we stand

Just 70 years ago, most of the people of Val Gardena were farmers and lived on high altitude farms around the Sella and the Sassolungo Group. They tended to their pastures and cultivated where they could along the steep hillsides, and ponderously cared for their crops.

Back in the 17th century, when the first families began to try their hand at wood carving, no one could have ever imagined that the Val Gardena style of wood carving would become known throughout the world. The little wooden houses at the Christmas market in S. Cristina are festively decorated for the occasion. The three main centres of Val Gardena - Ortisei, S. Cris- tina and Selva Gardena - are just a mere 8 km apart from each other. Each offers top-quality holidays throughout the year. What really makes these villages stand out is the magnificent natural landscape, their commitment to culture and tradition, and the warm and courteous hospitality.

In 1873, the writer Amelia Edwards defined Ortisei as the “capital of Toyland”. The town welcomes its visitors at Ortisei the entrance of Val Gardena, at 1,236 m above sea level. It is distinguished by its worldliness yet classic alpine character and its attractive mixture of modern and traditional architecture, as well as the ample choices of sports, culture, art, gastronomy and shopping.

Farther up and on the sunny side on the valley, there is S. Cristina, a small picturesque village at an altitude of 1,428 m. Surrounded by Monte Pana, Col Raiser and the finish line of the World Cup slope Saslong, the tiny town has won the hearts of mountain and winter sports enthusiasts, and just about anyone seeking a relaxing holiday.

At an elevation of 1,563 m, situated at the bottom of the Sella Group and right in the heart of the renowned alpine skiing circuit Dolomiti Superski, there is Selva Gardena. A lively town at the end of the valley, well known for its bars, restaurants, traditional chalets and all sorts of fun, S. Cristina like parties, discos and après-ski.

The Railway of Val Gardena
