Quintin - El Amante Cine (Argentinië) Like Cannes, Venice or Berlin, the rotterdam International Film Festival presents an overwhelming array of films and events that range widely - geographically, thematically - with a concentration on alternative media projects. The Dutch people are friendly and helpful. Everyone speaks English, but they all smoke - everywhere and incessantly. Ruth and Archie Perlmutter - Film Journal International (VS) This is one festival that does not conclude with its closing night party Howard Feinstein - The Independent Film & Video (VS) The Rotterdam Film Festival is distinctive not only In the way it supports filmmakers beyond its official dates, but also for the, shall we say, unusual sidebars it presents. Howard Feinstein - The Independent Film & Video (VS) An increasingly popular stopover for globalfesthoppers, between Sundance and Berlin David Rooney-Variety (VS) Rotterdam is well established as the venue of one of the most adventurous, ambitious, friendly and well organisedfilm festivals in the world Geoff Andrew - Time Out (GB) Auch wenn seine Zukunft nichtgerade rosig aussieht, in Rotterdam prasentierte sich das unabhdngige, internationale Kino mit stilistischer Vief alt und erzdhierischer Leidenschaft. Jörg Taszman - Berliner Zeitung (Duitsland) Like Rotterdam itself, the International Film Festival is a marvelous testament to measured growth and adaptability. In its zj years, IFFR has matured in a vital business place for European distributors while maintaining warm alliances with artists, financiers and enthusiastic audiences. General good feelings are only part of the story; Rotterdam learned to give back to the film community in many ways several years ago..... From a logistical standpoint, the IFFR is practically faultless. Jean-Marc Lalanne-Cahiers de Cinema (Frankrijk) For those who bemoan the commercialisation of Sundance and the Americanisation of Berlin, Rotterdam is much more than a convenient stopover on the filmfestival circuit. A u-day event... has a well-earned reputation as a sanctuary for film lovers. The prevailing mood is anabeshedly cinephilic, the glitz quotient agreeable low. Under British director Simon Field, Rotterdam has consolidated its position as Europe’s moest adventurous festival. Dennis Urn - Independent on Sunday (GB) The Rotterdam Film Festival, held in the dead afwinter in a city that will never be mistaken for Acapulco, may be the internationalfilm event offering the most poignant intimations of spring. To attend is to glimpse the future of movies or, at least, the future ofcinephilia.(...) This is the place where the Centre Pompidou premieres Chris Marker’s new CD-ROM. (...) mirroring the mysterious dutch national character, Rotterdam combines social responsibility with libertarian license. If there's one point that Rotterdam makes, it’s that non-commercial cinema still ahs every possibility of being explosive.(...) Rotterdam continues to be regarded as the cutting edge of the Euro festival circuit.

What is the difference between video piracy and free trade? Globalization has made these hot button issues today, and Pang Laikwan’s Cultural Control and Globalization in Asia shows us why. Her analyses of, for example, stylized violence in the production of an Asian cinematic identity and Kill Bill’s copying of it versus attempts to control copying of DVDs of Kill Bill, are vivid and vital reading for anyone who wants to understand the forces shaping contemporary Asian cinematic culture. Chris Berry, Professor of Film and Television Studies, Goldsmiths College, University of London This book makes a valuable contribution to discussions of global film culture. Through an original exploration of the role of “copying” in Asian (and American) cinema, Pang offers us new ways to think about issues ranging from copyright to the relations between global and local cinematic production.

E invece...

He was a key motivating force in the development of experimental film in the UK and in the building of its infrastructure. Practicing at a time when the field was just forming, Dwoskin inhabited a key position as a film-maker and teacher. His arrival from the US, as often recounted, was through a Fulbright scholarship as a Graphic Designer in 1964 and Dwoskin has an impressive CV in this field as well as in film. He taught Graphic Design at the London College of Printing (now LCC) and later became Professor of Film at the RCA alongside Peter Gidal until the Department was closed down in the 1980s.

VHD Index - 02 9/29/04 4:43 PM Page 715 Alternative Titles Index While it's true that we couldn't include every Asian cult flick in this slim little vol- ume—heck, there's dozens being dug out of vaults and slapped onto video as you read this—the one you're looking for just might be in here under a title you didn't know about. Most of these films have been released under more than one title, and while we've done our best to use the one that's most likely to be familiar, that doesn't guarantee you aren't trying to find Crippled Avengers and don't know we've got it as The Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms. And so, we've gathered as many alternative titles as we can find, including their original language title(s), and arranged them in alphabetical order in this index to help you out. Remember, English language articles ("a", "an", "the") are ignored in the sort, but foreign articles are NOT ignored. Hey, my Japanese is a little rusty, and some languages just don't have articles.
