Majuro Atoll THE VASCULAR PLANTS OF MAJURO ATOLL, REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS ABSTRACT Majuro Atoll has been a center of activity for the Marshall Islands since 1944 and is now the major population center and port of entry for the country. Previous to the accompanying study, no thorough documentation has been made of the vascular plants of Majuro Atoll. There were only reports that were either part of much larger discussions on the entire Micronesian region or the Marshall Islands as a whole, and were of a very limited scope. Previous reports by Fosberg, Sachet & Oliver (1979, 1982, 1987) presented only 115 vascular plants on Majuro Atoll. In this study, 563 vascular plants have been recorded on Majuro. INTRODUCTION The accompanying report presents a complete flora of Majuro Atoll, which has never been done before. It includes a listing of all species, notation as to origin (i.e. indigenous, aboriginal introduction, recent introduction), as well as the original range of each. The major synonyms are also listed. For almost all, English common names are presented. Marshallese names are given, where these were found, and spelled according to the current spelling system, aside from limitations in diacritic markings. A brief notation of location is given for many of the species. The entire list of 563 plants is provided to give the people a means of gaining a better understanding of the nature of the plants of Majuro Atoll. -

A comprehensive taxonomic review of the genus and species was carried out by Mesa et al. (2009), which lists all suspected junior synonyms of R. indica, including Raoiella camur (Chaudhri and Akbar), Raoiella empedos (Chaudhri and Akbar), Raoiella obelias (Hasan and Akbar), Raoiella pandanae (Mohanasundaram), Raoiella phoenica (Meyer) and Raoiella rahii (Akbar and Chaudhri). The review also highlighted synonymy with Rarosiella cocosae found on coconut in the Philippines. -

We propose a method for seed shape quantification based on the comparison of the bi-dimensional images of the seeds with geometric figures. J index is the percent of similarity of a seed image with a figure taken as a model. Models in shape quantification include geometrical figures (circle, ellipse, oval ::: ) and their derivatives, as well as other figures obtained as geometric representations of algebraic equations. The analysis is based on three sources: Published work, images available on the Internet, and seeds collected or stored in our collections. Some of the models here described are applied for the first time in seed morphology, like the superellipses, a group of bidimensional figures that represent well seed shape in species of the Calamoideae and Phoenix canariensis Hort. ex Chabaud. -

Full Length Research Paper Woody plant species used in urban forestry in West Africa: Case study in Lomé, capital town of Togo Radji Raoufou*, Kokou Kouami and Akpagana Koffi Laboratory of Plant Biology and Ecology, BP 1515 Lomé - Togo. Accepted 13 July, 2019 Many studies have been conducted on the flora of Togo. However, none of them is devoted to the ornamental flora horticulture. This survey aims to establish an inventory of the woody plant species in urban forests of Lomé, the capital town of Togo. It covers the trees planted along the avenues, in the gardens, courtyards, shady trees and trees used as fences for houses or trees at the seaside. In total, 297 plant species belong to 141 genera and 48 families were recorded. They are dominated by 79% of dicotyledonous, 13% of monocotyledonous and 8% of gymnosperms. Families that are best represented in terms of species are those of the Euphorbiaceae, Arecaceae and Acanthaceae. Alien species represent 69% and African species represent 31% out of which 6% are from Togo. According to the current threatening of the natural habitat by human activities, African native plant species could be more useful for ornamental purposes than exotic plants. In 2004, the mite invaded the New World resulting in high population densities and apparent new host associations- including Musa spp. (bananas and plantains). Subsequently, RPM has become widely established in the tropical Americas. -

ABUL HASSAN Department of Botany, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh Abstract The present article focuses the status of plant diversity of Dhaka University campus. A total of 541 plant species have been recorded from the campus area. These species are assigned to 117 families. For each species local name, scientific name, family and habit have been provided. Species presentation in the families varied from 1 to 26. 47% species belongs to 16 families and 53% species belongs to others 101 families. Euporbiaceae is the largest family in the Dicotyledon having 26 species whereas Liliaceae is the largest family in Monocotyledon having 18 species. Among the recorded species, 37% are represented by herbs, 29% by trees, 21% by shrubs, 11% by climbers, 2% by epiphytes and 0.2% by parasites. Plant species recorded in the campus categorized into different purpose groups. The result showed that 59% plant species represented by native species whereas 41% plant species represented by exotics. The survey spotted the presence a number of threatened species of Bangladesh in the gardent of the campus. Such species are Corypha taliera, Podocarpus nerifolia, Mangifera sylvatica, Willoughbia edulis, Hydnocarpus kurzii, Gloriosa superva, Entada redii, Hedychium coccinium and Vandopsis gigantea. We all including animals are totally dependent on plant diversity directly or indirectly for not only food energy but also for all necessity of daily life. -

We detected HCN production in only two species of one genus, Drymophloeus. Additional smaller surveys of shoot meristems and roots revealed cyanogenesis only in the shoot meristem of one species of Dypsis. Our results indicate that cyanogenesis is rather rare in the family. Introduction Cyanide production is a widespread phenomenon in plants, with cyanogenic compounds present in many species across the plant kingdom (Hegnauer, 1977). These compounds are often ecologically signi"cant and can be hazardous to human health when they occur in crop plants. Although cyanogenesis has arisen indepen- dently in several lineages, it is a good taxonomic marker for several groups of plants (e.g., Passi#oraceae; Olafsdottir et al., 1989). Cyanogenic plants typically store cyanide in the form of cyanogenic glycosides. These plants release HCN only after tissue damage brings apoplastic {-glucosidases into contact with vacuolar glycosides. Some phenotypically acyanogenic plants * Corresponding author.
