Bogor Botanic Gardens is an ex-situ conservation centre, covering an area of 87 ha, with 12,376 plant specimens, collected from Indonesia and other tropical countries throughout the world. One of the richest collections in the Gardens comprises members of the aroid family (Araceae). The aroids are planted in several garden beds as well as in the nursery. They have been collected from the time of the Dutch era until now. These collections were obtained from botanical explorations throughout the forests of Indonesia and through seed exchange with botanic gardens around the world. Several of the Bogor aroid collections represent ‘living types’, such as Scindapsus splendidus Alderw., Scindapsus mamilliferus Alderw. and Epipremnum falcifolium Engl. These have survived in the garden from the time of their collection up until the present day. There are many aroid collections in the Gardens that have potentialities not widely recognised. The aim of this study is to reveal the diversity of aroids species in the Bogor Botanic Gardens, their scientific value, their conservation status, and their potential as ornamental plants, medicinal plants and food. -

The mature stomata were laterocytic, staurocytic, anisocytic, paracytic and diacytic. The abnormalities noticed include unopen stomatal pore, two stomata sharing one subsidiary cell, one guard cell, parallel contiguous and aborted guard cell. A. godseffiana can be distinguished by parallel contiguous on both surfaces. Curved uniseriate non-glandular trichomes were restricted to A. wilkesiana. Two stomata sharing one subsidiary cell occurred only on the lower surface of A. hispida. The shapes of epidermal anticlinal cell walls, guard cell areas, stomata index and trichomes varied. The differences are of taxonomic importance and can be used to identify and delimit each species by supporting other systematic lines of evidence. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Historical Setting of the Guianan Plant Heritage The Guianas are embedded high in the green shoulder of northern South America, an area once known as the "Wild Coast". They are the only non-Latin American countries in South America, and are situated just north of the Equator in a configuration with the Amazon River of Brazil to the south and the Orinoco River of Venezuela to the west. The three Guianas comprise, from west to east, the countries of Guyana (area: 83,000 square miles; capital: Georgetown), Surinam (area: 63, 037 square miles; capital: Paramaribo) and French Guiana (area: 34, 740 square miles; capital: Cayenne). Perhaps the earliest physical contact between Europeans and the present-day Guianas occurred in 1500 when the Spanish navigator Vincente Yanez Pinzon, after discovering the Amazon River, sailed northwest and entered the Oyapock River, which is now the eastern boundary of French Guiana. -

Not only are the flowers colorful, the leaves can be light green, dark green or green and maroon. Light: The Lipstick vine will not bloom without adequate light. They require very bright, indirect light. Avoid placing this plant in full shade or full sun. Direct sun will burn the leaves. The plant needs bright light for a portion of the day, but not all day long. Water: If you allow the top 25% of the soil to dry out before watering, this plant will flower more frequently and more abundant. If the leaves appear soft and shriveled, give it more water. These plants will also lose green leaves TIPS: when over-watered. • Lipstick plants like warm temperatures between 75-85°F. : Fertilizer every other week in the Fertilizing • Prefers high humidity, but will do well in Spring and Summer and only monthly in the basic household humidity too. Petals pale purplish-pink, c.1.2 cm; standard petal marked with yellow from middle to base. Fruit narrowly oblong, somewhat woody, to 15 x 1.2 cm; seeds up to 11 per fruit. Range: Mexico to South America. Grown as an ornamental in the Botanic Gardens, Georgetown, Guyana (Index Seminum, 1982) and in French Guiana (de Granville, 1985). Grown as a shade tree in Surinam (Ostendorf, 1962). In tropical America this species is often interplanted with coffee and cacao trees to shade them; it is recommended for intensified utilization as a fuelwood for the humid tropics (National Academy of Sciences, 1980; Little, 1983). 9. Pterocarpus Jacquin Unarmed, nearly evergreen trees, sometimes lianas. Leaves alternate, petiolate, odd- pinnate, 1-pinnate; leaflets alternate. Inflorescence an axillary or terminal panicle or raceme. SYNONYMS LISTED IN SMITH & DOWNS MONOGRAPH (3 VOLUMES 1974-79) Compiled by DEREK BUTCHER Cultivar Registrar Bromeliad Society International FIRST EDITION Published by The Bromeliad Society International JULY 2006 INTRODUCTION The index in the 3 volumes of the Smith & Downs monograph contains all names used in Bromeliaceae in the history of botany. To find out details about the particular name you have to search for the particular page, which can be frustrating especially if the bold face indicating current name has faded! I decided to go through the three volumes and compile my own list so I could refer to the entry concerned. Names quoted by Lyman Smith are not necessarily legitimate names and some are passing references made in botanical journals. Another problem is in duplication of names such as Aechmea amazonica where the ‘legitimate’ name has become Wittrockia amazonica whereas a passing reference to Aechmea amazonica leads to Aechmea chantinii. Such are the problems of taxonomical synonymy. In my own records of individual Bromeliaceae species I hold details of synonyms under the ‘current’ name. Hence I find this reference list very helpful when reading old documents such as Baker’s Bromeliaceae 1889 and Mez 1935. There is also an increased availability of scans of herbarium specimens on the internet and these are filed mostly under the original name! BOH: A Unique Chemical for the Induction of Flowering in Bromeliads Héctor R. Cibes and A. Santiago Nieves1 INTRODUCTION The pineapple family, Bromeliaceae, is composed of stemless herbs native to tropical America whence they have been disseminated to other areas of the world. They have stiff and sometimes spiny leaves. Their flowers are borne in panicles. Perhaps the most important genus of the family is Ananas, to which the commercial pineapple varieties belong. Other members of the family are noted for the fiber obtained from their leaves. Bromelia pinguin L., or wild pineapple, a native of the West Indies, is widely used as a hedge plant and its fruit is also known to contain a proteolytic enzyme. The genus Bromeha was named after the Swedish botanist, Olaf Bromelius. Bromeliads are becoming increasingly important as ornamental plants, both locally and in the United States. Not only the plants themselves are showy, because of their color, shape, and variegation, but also their flowers are beautiful. An important characteristic among bromeliads is that their flowers are long-lasting on the plants. Some will last, attached to the mother plant, for months without losing their beautiful appear ance. FLOWER INDUCTION However, flowering is not uniform in this group of plants. For instance, a pineapple field may flower sporadically 10 to 15 times throughout the year, after attaining the proper age. Thus, flower-forcing during a con venient time along the growing season is imperative in commercial plant ings. This is attainable through the use of suitable concentrations of either calcium carbide (CaC2), naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), or /3-hydroxyethyl hydrazine (BOH). -

Majuro Atoll THE VASCULAR PLANTS OF MAJURO ATOLL, REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS ABSTRACT Majuro Atoll has been a center of activity for the Marshall Islands since 1944 and is now the major population center and port of entry for the country. Previous to the accompanying study, no thorough documentation has been made of the vascular plants of Majuro Atoll. There were only reports that were either part of much larger discussions on the entire Micronesian region or the Marshall Islands as a whole, and were of a very limited scope. Previous reports by Fosberg, Sachet & Oliver (1979, 1982, 1987) presented only 115 vascular plants on Majuro Atoll. In this study, 563 vascular plants have been recorded on Majuro. INTRODUCTION The accompanying report presents a complete flora of Majuro Atoll, which has never been done before. It includes a listing of all species, notation as to origin (i.e. indigenous, aboriginal introduction, recent introduction), as well as the original range of each. The major synonyms are also listed. For almost all, English common names are presented. Marshallese names are given, where these were found, and spelled according to the current spelling system, aside from limitations in diacritic markings. A brief notation of location is given for many of the species. The entire list of 563 plants is provided to give the people a means of gaining a better understanding of the nature of the plants of Majuro Atoll. -

Accepted 23 November, 2010 Many studies have been conducted on the flora of Togo. However, none of them is devoted to the ornamental flora horticulture. This survey aims to establish an inventory of the woody plant species in urban forests of Lomé, the capital town of Togo. It covers the trees planted along the avenues, in the gardens, courtyards, shady trees and trees used as fences for houses or trees at the seaside. In total, 297 plant species belong to 141 genera and 48 families were recorded. They are dominated by 79% of dicotyledonous, 13% of monocotyledonous and 8% of gymnosperms. Families that are best represented in terms of species are those of the Euphorbiaceae, Arecaceae and Acanthaceae. Alien species represent 69% and African species represent 31% out of which 6% are from Togo. According to the current threatening of the natural habitat by human activities, African native plant species could be more useful for ornamental purposes than exotic plants.
