Africa and the New World Order KISII UNIVERSITY 2014 KISII UNIVERSITY First Annual International Conference on: Africa and the New World Order Organized by Kisii University (KSU) Main Campus, KisiI, Kenya When: July 30th to august 2nd, 2014 DAY 1 DAY2 DAY 3 30THJULY-WEDNESDAY 31ST JULY-THURSDAY 1ST AUGUST-FRIDAY 2014 Message from Convenor of 1st International Annual Interdisciplinary Conference Prof. Maurice Nyamanga Amutabi, PhD Welcome to the KISII UNIVERSITY (KSU) Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the First Annual International Interdisciplinary Conference, taking place at the Kisii University (KSU) from July 30 to August 2, 2014, Kisii, Kenya on behalf of the management of this university, led by our Vice Chancellor John S. Akama. It is a great honour to welcome over 500 of you, to this important conference. This is a major milestone to our University because this is the highest number that Kisii University will be hosting for the first time. We need to applaud the University for this great achievement in th history of this young institution In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe talks about the lizard that jumped from the high iroko tree and said he would praise himself if no one else did. I am excited that many of you have decided to attend this highly acclaimed 1st Annual International Interdisciplinary Conference despite the terror threat in the country. It gives me great pleasure and honour to welcome you all. We have put all necessary plans in place to avert any security threat. We know this year’s conference, like Juan Antonio Samarach often said of the Olympics, “will be the greatest ever!” The Annual Conference We intend to make this conference to be an annual event . Some annual conferences die with the inaugural one. I am excited to be the convenor of this annual conference which I am glad to see is going to become an annual intellectual activity for many of you from all over the world. My friend and mentor Prof. Godfrey Muriuki, who is also the Chancellor of Kisii University, my mentor at the University of Illinois Prof. Paul Tiyambe Zeleza, my friend and mentor Prof. Toyin Falola of the University of Texas at Austin in the US, and colleagues at Kisii University will all be very pleased to see the large turnout of this conference and the many quality publications that will come out from the first conference. Last. I would like to thank the commitment that KSU attaches to research and publishing through the cooperation that this conference has received from top management of this University. Publication of articles in journals and edited volumes We are committed to publishing all papers presented in our journals and edited volumes. The hallmark of quality publications relies on peer review feedback and good revision of articles. I would like to thank in advance participants who will revise their papers and resubmit for publication in a timely fashion. This will make the publication process easy and much more enjoyable. Each edited volume will cost you about 3,000/- while the special journal edition will cost you 1,000/- per copy. We shall limit a maximum of 3 copies per author, and maximum of 2 two copies for none authors. During this year’s conference, we shall ask that those presenting two papers pay half of registration fee for the additional paper to go towards helping in the publication process. If you are presenting only one paper, you will not be asked to pay additional fees for the processing of your peer reviewed article. We ask you to buy copies of your book or journal issue in order to promote our publishers and printers and to build up next year. Conference Theme The conference theme this year is on the “Africa and the new world order” which has attracted a wide range of abstracts, from education, agriculture, social sciences and humanities and science and technology. We are delighted by the high number and high quality of abstracts. The high quality of abstracts is an indication that our request to senior scholars to collaborate with junior scholars is working. We will still encourage the peer review process that we have used to improve on the quality of abstracts and paper presentations. We need to think in unique and creative ways that will make the conference more attractive and useful to scholars from across the world. We should begin to imagine new possibilities in addressing various development needs of Africa. I am confident that the conference this year will bring the tradition of deep engagement and conversation that we will enjoy in the future. I therefore invite you to create a rigorous and dynamic academic environment for presenters by being active listeners and providing positive criticism. Give the presenters useful comments that will assist in the revision and publication of the paper. I wish you good luck in your presentations. Keynote speakers This year, we have invited keynote speakers from a wide array of fields. We feel very privileged and honoured to have such high profile scholars in our midst. Prof. Godfrey Muriuki, Prof. Collete Suda, Prof. Gilbert Khadiagala, Prof. Shadrack Nasong’o, Prof. Justus Mbae, Prof. Chris Wanjala and Prof. Eunice Kamaara will all be speaking at this conference. These are reputable scholars and our mentors and we are delighted to hear from them. Many of the keynote speakers are famous names whom many of you have had the chance to imitate and emulate, and it is great that we are sharing this academic platform with them. We are impressed with the great mix of scholars from a wide range of disciplines, age, race, gender and geographical spread. Thanking members of Organizing Committee I would like to applaud the organizing committee, for their commitment in responding to many e-mails and receiving telephone calls from far and wide, sometimes at odd times and putting up with all manner of inquiries. I am glad to introduce the 2015 call for papers on “Africa: Looking East or West” found at the end of the programme. We are expecting abstracts after this year’s conference. 3 Welcoming everyone to Kisii University and Kisii Town, Kenya We welcome colleagues from universities in Kenya and abroad to visit various attractions around Kisii University and Kenya. A Report on the Mapping Study of Peace & Security Engagement in African Tertiary Institutions Written by Funmi E. Vogt This project was funded through the support of the Carnegie Corporation About the African Leadership Centre In July 2008, King’s College London through the Conflict, Security and Development group (CSDG), established the African Leadership Centre (ALC). In June 2010, the ALC was officially launched in Nairobi, Kenya, as a joint initiative of King’s College London and the University of Nairobi. The ALC aims to build the next generation of scholars and analysts on peace, security and development. The idea of an African Leadership Centre was conceived to generate innovative ways to address some of the challenges faced on the African continent, by a new generation of “home‐grown” talent. The ALC provides mentoring to the next generation of African leaders and facilitates their participation in national, regional and international efforts to achieve transformative change in Africa, and is guided by the following principles: a) To foster African‐led ideas and processes of change b) To encourage diversity in terms of gender, region, class and beliefs c) To provide the right environment for independent thinking d) Recognition of youth agency e) Pursuit of excellence f) Integrity The African Leadership Centre mentors young Africans with the potential to lead innovative change in their communities, countries and across the continent. The Centre links academia and the real world of policy and practice, and aims to build a network of people who are committed to the issue of Peace and Security on the continent of Africa.

  • Statistical Evaluation of the Impact of ICT on Nigerian Universities
International Journal of Education and Development using Information and Communication Technology (IJEDICT), 2012, Vol. 8, Issue 1, pp. 104-120. Statistical evaluation of the impact of ICT on Nigerian universities Iwasokun Gabriel Babatunde, Alese Boniface Kayode, Thompson Aderonke Favour Bethy Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria Aranuwa Felix Ola Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, Nigeria ABSTRACT This paper proposes twenty-four performance indices that were freely considered by the authors as relevant for the conceptualization and evaluation of the impact of ICT on the Nigerian Universities. The indices are contained in the questionnaire that was administered on forty five out of sixty three public universities that span the six geo-political zones of Nigeria to obtain relevant data. Copies of the questionnaire were administered at meetings with staff and students. The data obtained were subjected to factor analysis by principal components using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS). From this analysis, four factors were extracted with different set of indices. The extracted factors are communication and feedback, study aid, processing and administration and management and relationship. The percentage contribution of each factor to the current performance of ICT in the university system in Nigeria was estimated. Each percentage contribution also exhibits the degree of relevance of the associated indices. It was discovered that the total sum of the percentage contributions was less than 100. This showed that the performance indices of some extraneous factors which contribute in no small measure to the current performance of ICT in Nigerian universities were not given consideration in the research instrument. Such extraneous factors include but not limited to staff training, security of lives and properties, discipline among staff and student, curriculum and government policy on ICT.

RELIGION IN TRANSFORMING AFRICA Knowing Each Other Project - 11 Jan 2017 Beyond Religious Tolerance Beyond ‘an important contribution to the ethnography of religion, peaceful coexistence and communal politics … a very readable and enjoyable book.’ Wale Adebanwi, University of California-Davis ‘a timely and refreshing addition to the growing literature on religious collaboration and coexistence in otherwise religiously divided societies across the world.’ Ebenezer Obadare, University of Kansas Since the end of the Cold War, and especially since 9/11, religion has become an increasingly important factor of personal and group identification. Based on an African case study, this book calls for new ways of thinking about diversity that go ‘beyond religious tolerance’. Focusing on the predominantly Muslim Yoruba town of Ede, the authors challenge the assumption that religious difference automatically leads to conflict: in south-west Nigeria, Muslims, Christians and traditionalists have co-existed largely peacefully since the early twentieth century. In some contexts, Ede’s citizens emphasise the importance and significance of religious difference, and the need for tolerance. But elsewhere they refer to religious boundaries in passing, or even celebrate and transcend religious divisions. Drawing on detailed ethnographic and historical research, survey work, oral histories and poetry by UK- and Nigeria- based researchers, the book examines how Ede’s citizens experience religious difference in their everyday lives. It examines the town’s royal history and relationship with the deity Sàngó, its old Islamic compounds and its Christian institutions, as well as marriage and family life across religious boundaries, to illustrate the multiplicity of religious practices in the life of the town and its citizens and to suggest an alternative approach to religious difference.
