Rotorcraft (2011)
Rotorcraft Overview The rotorcraft industry produces aircraft, powered by either turboshaft or reciprocating engines, capable of performing vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) operations. The rotorcraft sector includes helicopters, gyrocopters, and tiltrotor aircraft. Helicopters, which employ a horizontal rotor for both lift and propulsion, are the mainstay of the industry. Gyrocopters are produced in much smaller quantities, primarily for use in recreational flying. Tiltrotor aircraft, such as the V-22 Osprey1, can take off vertically and then fly horizontally as a fixed-wing aircraft. Rotorcraft are manufactured in most industrialized countries, based on indigenous design or in collaboration with, or under license from, other manufacturers. Manufacturers in the United States of civilian helicopters include American Eurocopter, Bell, Enstrom, Kaman, MD Helicopters, Robinson, Schweizer (now a subsidiary of Sikorsky), and Sikorsky. Bell moved its civilian helicopter production to Canada, with the last U.S. product completed in 1993.2 American Eurocopter—a subsidiary of the European manufacturer and subsidiary of EADS NV—has manufacturing and assembly facilities in Grand Prairie, Texas and Columbus, Missouri. European producers include AgustaWestland, Eurocopter, NHIndustries, and PZL Swidnik. Russian manufacturers including Mil Moscow, Kamov and Kazan helicopters, as well as a number of other rotorcraft related companies, have been consolidated under the Russian government majority-owned OAO OPK Oboronprom.3 (See this report’s Russia -

L-39 Albatros
L-39 ALBATROS Type: L-39 Albatros Max Speed: 490 KIAS / Mach 0.80 Max Range: 864 NM G-Limits: +8.0g / -4.0g Ceiling: 36,000 ft Max Climb Rate: 4,130+ fpm Max Endurance: 3.8 hours The L-39 Albatros is a highly capable, stable, subsonic aircraft that first flew in November 1969. The aircraft is produced in the Czech Republic and it is constructed in conjunction with plans developed by Aero Vodochody and its chief designer, Jan Vlček. The L-39 is flown worldwide, principally with former Soviet allies. The aircraft continues to fly in countries as diverse as Iraq, Chechnya, Libya, Syria and Russia. The Albatros is flown primarily as a trainer or light attack aircraft similar in mission to the Italian MB339 or M-346, the British Hawk and the US Goshawk. The L-39 is designed with many distinguishing characteristics. The aircraft possesses a uniquely tall vertical tail that is swept back and is one of its dominant features. The tail, with its inset rudder, provides directional control to the aircraft. The L-39 has thick wings that provide ample lift for the airframe, and each wing has provisions to mount stores or fuel tanks that extend the range of the L-39. Operational g-force limits at 4,200 kg are +8g/-4g. Side-by-side airbrakes are located under the L-39 fuselage slightly ahead of the wing’s leading edge. The L-39 has variable-incidence horizontal stabilizers mounted on the rear of the aircraft at the base of the rudder. -

These warships are primarily deployed to deter aggression and protect American strategic interests. Should deterrence fail, the carrier’s bombers and attack aircraft engage in vital operations to support other forces. The collection includes the 1940-designed Grumman TBM Avenger of World War II. Also on display is the Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a true workhorse of the 1950s and ‘60s, as well as the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and Grumman A-6 Intruder, stalwarts of the Vietnam War. Originally built as the TBF by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, they were affectionately nicknamed “Turkeys” for their somewhat ungainly appearance. And the industry has always been one of the important projects to conduct of the country. The industry involves not only technology, capitals but also politics. In order to maintain the influential power to the world, countries, especially the United States and Western Europe invest huge amount in this industry. However, under the globalization and high oil prices era, the industry encounters some difficulties to change. Outsourcing has become the solution for those manufacturers. The high growth of economic in Asia becomes another battle field for western countries to fight, especially in China. Chinese power is getting stronger; however, western countries concern about the special political backgrounds in China. Nevertheless, conducting business and finding cheap labor resource have been multinational companies’ priority these days. The influential power of multinational companies and those parent countries become the major decision maker in the game. The Boeing Company has all the characteristics of these controversial issues. Chinese government, the Boeing Company, the rival Airbus and the U.S. government in the game would affect the industry. -

US NAVY AIRCRAFT Douglas A-4B Skyhawk In the early 1950s, the Navy sought a jet-powered replacement for the large, piston-engined AD-1 Skyraider. Noted aircraft designer Edward Henry “Ed” Heinemann led his team in creating the Skyhawk, an aircraft weighing half as much as the Skyraider. The A- 4 Skyhawk features a modified delta wing with a span of only twenty-seven and one half feet that did not require folding for carrier hangar storage or transport to the flight deck. The A-4 met all Navy performance requirements and set a world speed record of 695 mph (1119 kph) in 1954, earning the craft the nickname “Heinemann’s Hot Rod.” The A-4 was flown by Senator John McCain off the USS Forrestal during the Vietnam War. He had previously flown Skyraiders off the Intrepid. The A-4B Skyhawk displayed on the hangar deck is painted to resemble one that flew off the Intrepid during her first Vietnam tour. The in flight photograph of this aircraft was provided by Gerald Sagehorn, a pilot who flew this aircraft off Intrepid. Grumman/Eastern Aircraft TBM-3E Avenger 3E Avenger First flown in 1941 and introduced operationally in June 1942, the Avenger became the U.S. Navy’s standard torpedo bomber throughout World War II, with more than 9,836 constructed. Designed and built by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Coporation, they were affectionately nicknamed “turkeys” for their somewhat ungainly appearance. Avengers flew off the Intrepid throughout her World War II career.
