Airport Alpha Code: The three letter code identifying the airport. This code is used .in all of the major airline reservation systems and is recognized by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). B. Airport Numeric Code: A five digit code which corresponds to the alphabetic name spelling of the principal city served by the airport. Airports that share service at a particular city will therefore have identical numeric codes. The number is used primarily for sorting records by city name and for grouping multiple airports within a city. C. World Area Code: A three digit code which specifies in what area of the world a city is located. The first digit represents a major geographic area, such a "O" for the United States, "4" for Europe, etc. The last two digits represent a specific subdivision of the major geographic area, such as a state or a country. Contact the Office of Airline Information at the address listed on the cover for a complete list of these area codes. D. City Name: The name of the principal city served by this airport. Carrier Entity Code: A five-character code assigned to each air carrier that is used primarily for DOT reporting purposes. Carrier Group Code: This numeric code classifies the US air carriers by the amount of total operating revenue for the previous year unless the carrier is a domestic ONLY all-cargo. Departures: Revenue Aircraft Departures: 1. The number of revenue aircraft departures performed in revenue scheduled service, including extra sections. 2. Available Capacity-Payload reflects the total available capacity for passenger, freight, and mail applicable to the aircraft with which this flight is performed. 2. Available Seats reflect the actual number of seats for sale, excluding those blocked for safety or operational reasons. M. Cabin Identification: Cabin (First, Coach, and Middle) passenger data are not identified for US air carriers operating in domestic markets. All data are consolidated into First Cabin, and the Middle and Coach Cabin Fields will each contain a value of zero. N. Elapsed Time: The total elapsed time computed in minutes. 1. Ramp-to-Ramp time is the total elapsed time computed from the moment the aircraft moves under its own power until it comes to rest at the next point of landing. 2. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION BUREAU OF TRANSPORTATION STATISTICS OFFICE OF AIRLINE INFORMATION ACCOUNTING AND REPORTING DIRECTIVE No. 260 Issue Date: 6/28/2002 Effective Date: July 1, 2002 Parts:217, 241, 298 LIST OF NUMERIC AIRCRAFT TYPE CODES This directive applies to U.S. and foreign air carriers, and it replaces Accounting and Reporting Directive No. 252, dated February 15, 2001~ We have added aircraft type codes for the Boeing 737-600 and 737-900 series aircraft, the Embraer 140 and the Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser. Also, we wish to remind air carriers that the Dornier 328 have jet and turbo-prop versions of the aircraft. There are different aircraft type codes for the different versions of the Dornier aircraft. AIRCRAFT TYPE CODES Boeing 737-500 new code is 616 Boeing 737-600 new code is 633 Boeing 737-800 new code is 614 Boeing 737-900 new code is 634 Embraer 140 new code is 676 Piper PA-12 Super cruiser new code is 086 DORNIER 328 Dornier 328 turbo-prop aircraft type code 449 Dornier 328 twin-jet aircraft type code 632 CABIN CONFIGURATION DIGIT The aircraft code is comprised of four numeric positions. The first three positions identify the aircraft type. The fourth position identifies the cabin configuration or that the aircraft is equipped for water landings. For instance, the numeric code for reporting a standard passenger/cargo B-747-100 is 8161; 816 is the code for the Boeing 747-lOD aircraft and the 4th digit {a cabin configuration digit) 11 1 11 identifies the passenger/cargo configuration. The cabin configuration digit can be either 1, 2, 3 or 4 as follows: · 11 1 11 = a normal passenger/cargo configuration. Passengers on the main deck and cargo below; NARA Reference Copy 11 2 11 = an all cargo freighter; ) 11 3 11 = a main deck configuration with separate compartments for both cargo and passengers; and 11 4 11 = aircraft equipped for water landings. Abstract: Recently, the new Green Deal policy initiative was presented by the European Union. The EU aims to achieve a sustainable future and be the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. By employing a systems engineering approach, this high-level task can be split into different levels to get from the vision to the relevant system or product itself. Part of this iterative process involves the aircraft requirements, which make the goals more achievable on the system level and allow validation of whether the designed systems fulfill these requirements. Within this work, the top-level aircraft requirements (TLARs) for a hybrid-electric regional aircraft for up to 50 passengers are presented. Cessna A185F Seaplane C-GVYE Taltson River (Ferguson’s Cabin) Northwest Territories 07 June 2004 Report Number A04W0114 Summary The Cessna A185F seaplane (registration C-GVYE, serial number 18503778) operated by Big River Air Ltd., departed Four Mile Lake, Alberta, on a visual flight rules flight to the Taltson River, Northwest Territories. The purpose of the flight was to transport three passengers to a site on the river known as Ferguson’s Cabin. At approximately 1700 mountain daylight time, as the aircraft was landing on the water near Ferguson’s Cabin, the left float dug in and the left wing struck the water. The aircraft immediately cartwheeled and came to rest floating inverted in the river, with only the bottoms of the floats visible at the surface. The pilot and the front seat passenger sustained serious injuries; however, they managed to exit the submerged and damaged aircraft through a broken window in the left cabin door. Four fishermen in boats responded to the accident, removed the survivors from the cold water, and transported them to a warm shelter.

    A Conceptual Design of a Short Takeoff and Landing Regional Jet Airliner Andrew S. Hahn 1 NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA, 23681 Most jet airliner conceptual designs adhere to conventional takeoff and landing performance. Given this predominance, takeoff and landing performance has not been critical, since it has not been an active constraint in the design. Given that the demand for air travel is projected to increase dramatically, there is interest in operational concepts, such as Metroplex operations that seek to unload the major hub airports by using underutilized surrounding regional airports, as well as using underutilized runways at the major hub airports. Both of these operations require shorter takeoff and landing performance than is currently available for airliners of approximately 100-passenger capacity. This study examines the issues of modeling performance in this now critical flight regime as well as the impact of progressively reducing takeoff and landing field length requirements on the aircraft’s characteristics.     REPORT 2009 BUSINESS AIRCRAFT FLEET US were having a fire sale trying to NO SURPRISES HERE quickly get rid of their business air- craft in order to avoid government and public scrutiny, countries like Brazil were turning to Business Aviation as a business solution. The result – well, we think the numbers speak for them- selves. So yes, 2009 was a slow year for Business Aviation – as expected. The World Fleet continued to grow, although at a much slower rate than past years (the world fleet grew by seven percent last year, in comparison to this year’s 4.8 percent). And yes, Europe may have been a surprise as it navigated the crisis fairly well, but only saw a 9.7 percent increase in its fleet, which although strong is almost half the size of last year’s world-lead- ing 18 percent. But the slowdowns in Europe and the US are made up for by the 15.3, 27.1 and 13.3 percent growth rates in Africa, Asia/Middle East and South America respectively. FLEET TOTALS Ok, so we changed our minds about (As of End 2009) 2009. Business Aviation is not slowing World Fleet 29,992 down. Business Aviation is simply European Fleet 3,959 changing, shifting and going where Jet Aircraft Worldwide 17,118 business goes – building new Turboprops Worldwide 12,499 economies and ensuring that business gets done. Nicklas © Smithsonian Institution, 2003 NASM Archives Desind Collection 1997-0014 Herbert Stephen Desind Collection 109 Cubic Feet, 305 Boxes Biographical Note Herbert Stephen Desind was a Washington, DC area native born on January 15, 1945, raised in Silver Spring, Maryland and educated at the University of Maryland. He obtained his BA degree in Communications at Maryland in 1967, and began working in the local public schools as a science teacher. At the time of his death, in October 1992, he was a high school teacher and a freelance writer/lecturer on spaceflight. Desind also was an avid model rocketeer, specializing in using the Estes Cineroc, a model rocket with an 8mm movie camera mounted in the nose. To many members of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), he was known as “Mr. Cineroc.” His extensive requests worldwide for information and photographs of rocketry programs even led to a visit from FBI agents who asked him about the nature of his activities. Mr. Desind used the collection to support his writings in NAR publications, and his building scale model rockets for NAR competitions. Desind also used the material in the classroom, and in promoting model rocket clubs to foster an interest in spaceflight among his students. Desind entered the NASA Teacher in Space program in 1985, but it is not clear how far along his submission rose in the selection process. He was not a semi-finalist, although he had a strong application.

Preface ommercial aviation recently celebrated its first centennial. Over the more than 100 years since the first Ctake off, aviation has witnessed challenges and changes that have made it a critical component of mod- ern societies. Most importantly, air transport brings humans closer together, promoting peace and harmo- ny through connectivity and social exchange. A key role for Hermes Air Transport Organisation is to contribute to the development, progress and promo- tion of air transport at the global level. This would not be possible without knowing the history and evolu- tion of the industry. Once a luxury service, affordable to only a few, aviation has evolved to become accessible to billions of peo- ple. But how did this evolution occur? This book provides an updated timeline of the key moments of air transport. It is based on the first aviation history book Hermes published in 2014 in partnership with ICAO, ACI, CANSO & IATA. I would like to express my appreciation to Professor Martin Dresner, Chair of the Hermes Report Committee, for his important role in editing the contents of the book.
