Junior Records 2020 JUNIOR RECORDS (correct as at 1/4/20) West Torrens Cricket Club - Junior Records The S.A.C.A. Junior grades began with an Under 16 Schoolboys competition in the January 1948 school holidays and later became an Under 17 competition (January 1968). It reverted to Under 16 for one season 2011-12 against the wishes of the majority of Clubs. This competition was known as the SACA Schoolboys competition from 1947-48 to 1973-74, Shell Shield from 1974-75 to 2003-04 and then became the Bank SA Shield in 2004-05. Originally the Carnival was conducted over 3 weeks in a round robin form with each team playing every other team – a series of 11 matches without finals. This was later reduced to a two week tournament with teams placed in two sets or zones and playing a series of 6 matches plus a cross zone final series. The Commonwealth Bank competitions began as single Under 16 and Under 14 grades in 1978-79 and expanded to Red and White divisions in each age group in 1988-89. The Club did not field any Under 14 teams in 1982-83. No Under 16 White team was fielded in 1991-92, 1992-93 and 1996-97 nor an Under 14 White team from 1994-95 to 1996-97. The home ground for the junior teams was at the University Playing Fields at West Beach until the end of 1984-85 with a short time at the Adelaide Airport Oval. A hard wicket was put down on Kings Reserve West and used from 1985-86 until the end of 1988-89. In Under 16 and Under 14 grades records where a Red or White team is not indicated then there was only one S.A.C.A. grade at that time. In 1986-87 and 1987-88 when there was no S.A.C.A. WHITE grade the Club had a second team in the A.T.C.A. Under 14 competition. When the senior teams transferred from Thebarton Oval to Kings Reserve West the junior home ground became Flinders Park P.S. with the occasional use of Findon P.S. When the Club moved its headquarters to Henley Oval for the 1997-98 season the Under 14s moved to Grange P.S. while the U16s remained at Flinders Park P.S. Flinders Park was eventually abandoned in favour of the U16s playing at Grange P.S. and the U14s at Henley P.S. For the 2006-07 season the Club secured Lockleys Oval #2 (turf wicket) for the Under 16 teams. Unfortunately the Goodwood C.C. would not renew the West Torrens sub-lease after the first two seasons and the U.16s returned to Grange P.S. but this Oval eventually became too small due to building encroachment so the U.16s moved to Jubilee Reserve at West Lakes for the beginning of the 2010-11 season. At the same time the standard of the Henley P.S. oval deteriorated and the U.14s moved to Lockleys North P.S. For season 2013-14 the Club was fortunate to secure the lease of Gleneagles Oval at Seaton for the U.16 teams and as Lockley Norths P.S. was unavailable for use due to building works the U.14s transferred to Jubilee Reserve, West Lakes. After the building was completed at L.N.P.S. the U.14s returned. The Woodville Rugby Club resumed the 12 month lease of Gleneagles Reserve at the start of the 2019-20 season so the U.16 teams moved to John Mitchell Oval, Cudmore Tce. Henley Beach. A limited season of matches for Primary School students was introduced by the SACA for the 1979-80 season and teams competed for the Savings Bank Shield (later State Bank Shield). The name was changed to the Ray Sutton Shield for the 1990-91 season. Teams were entered in the Western Suburbs Junior Cricket Association Under 13 competition in 1997-98, the Under 15 Grade in 1999-00 and an Under 11 team in 2012-13. They played on Sunday mornings at Grange, Henley and Fulham North Primary Schools. However the Under 15 team moved to the Central Southern Junior Cricket Association in 2000-01 and then to the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association for the 2001-02 season. The Club has not fielded an U15 team since then preferring to farm surplus players to local Community Clubs. The WSJCA introduced an U11 competition in 2013-14 with West Torrens an initial participant. The U11 and U 13 competitions were changed to U12 and U14 status for the 2017-18 season. Having been an inaugural member Club in the Western Suburbs Junior Cricket Association at the behest of the SACA in 1997-98 and a driving support in its foundation, the SACA decided that the elite Premier Grade Clubs would no longer be permitted to compete in Community Associations. (This ultimatum applied to Glenelg, Sturt and West Torrens). It was alleged that this was a direction from Cricket Australia. However an Official of Cricket Australia denied this. Our last season as a competing Club in the WSJCA was 2018-19. WEST TORRENS DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB RECORDS (included are the records for the Hindmarsh C.C. established in 1856-57 season, the former name of the present Club) INTRODUCTION These records have been compiled to replace those destroyed during the 1950s and are designed to satisfy the interest of cricket historians, former players and supporters of the Club. They can also be used to assist current players set new seasonal goals and assess their performances against those of the past. Included are performances registered during World Wars One and Two in what is sometimes referred to as the Unofficial SACA competition. As hostilities worsened in 1915 the SACA, as part of austerity measures, wanted to abandon District Cricket altogether. However a counter argument was put by players and Clubs that young men preparing to go to war, home on leave or involved in essential services needed to keep fit. A compromise was reached whereby the SACA organised an official program of matches for which points would be allocated but no finals were played and no official Premierships awarded nor awards granted. A similar situation occurred during World War Two. Unfortunately these performances were not acknowledged in the Club’s history From the Circus to the Pughole. The general consensus of current cricket historians is that these matches should be counted as official Club matches as they were part of a program organised by the SACA. There was no program of District matches during 1916-17, 1917-18 and 1942-43. The statistics have been compiled from newspapers such as The Register, The Observer, The Advertiser and the Sunday Mail.
