PRESIDENT’S REPORT

While this season did not have great on-field success from the Senior Men's or Juniors perspective, there was a huge amount to be proud of from our Women's Program through their One-Day and T20 premierships. I believe I witnessed a shift in the culture of this club as the men and women came together to support and celebrate this success and I congratulate all involved in making this happen. However, I will leave the commentary on the playing side of the club to others and restrict this report to some more of the big picture achievements and plans for our club.

We made significant increases in our footprint on the Henley and Grange Memorial Oval with the completion of construction of the Playing Equipment Shed this season, joining the new Curators Shed from last season. Well done to everyone involved in these tremendous projects, especially our Secretary, Charlie Rumbelow. In addition to these facilities we invested heavily in other equipment to be able to provide quality playing and training facilities for all players across the grades. There was a heavy investment in Grounds and Maintenance this year as will be evident in the Financial Statements and detailed more thoroughly in the Secretary's and Treasurer’s Reports. We will continue to invest in providing safe and quality facilities and equipment for this club.

We were ecstatic to be able to extend our lease with the Henley Football Club for what is essentially the next 9 years. We hope to further entrench our home base at Henley through some greater visibility of our club inside and outside the clubrooms in the coming years. Many thanks to Michael Broadbent, Rod Hill and our Patron Paul Caica for helping us through this process.

Speaking of our Patron, I thank Paul for his outstanding leadership and support for our club during his term, particularly through the difficult merger situation. Upon his retirement from Parliament, Paul graciously set the wheels in motion for a successor to assume this role and I am pleased to announce that Matthew Cowdrey OAM, Member for Colton, has accepted this position with our club. We look forward to starting a new chapter with Matt and again thank Paul for his support of our club.

Two club members this year received OAMs, with Life Member Ian Ravenscroft and Member Rex Adams being presented with their honours in June. Congratulations to both of these great supporters of our club.

Some other dot points on significant achievements this season and a broad thank you to those involved: • Ongoing success of our Young Eagles Academies for boys and girls culminating in Denis Brien being shortlisted for the Westfield Local Hero Award. • The publication of a book about the history of our antecedent club, Hindmarsh CC. “All The Kings’ Men” was the culmination of years of research by Denis Brien and was supported by a grant from the City of Charles Sturt with the printing of the book being undertaken by the club. Denis has donated all profits to Junior Development at WTDCC. An amazing gesture from a great human. • At the time we go to print the profit exceeds $5.2K. • Successful events for the season, enjoyed by members and supporters, included: o Eagle Day o Annual Golden Eagle Luncheon o Pernix T20 Legends Match vs Port CC o Celebration of 20 years at Henley Oval. • Increased sponsorship and canteen income for the second year running. The work of people such as Kent Sendy, Latisha Polkinghorne and Alan Hutton allows us to invest more in the club and facilities.

I have been fortunate to have been asked to represent Premier Cricket Clubs on two SACA Working Groups including the Cricket Connects Working Party and the Premier Cricket Funding Group. I applaud the SACA on their vision to bring together cricket stakeholders to build the future of the game in SA and I expect great outcomes for all levels of cricket to come from these processes.

As we move on from reflecting on the achievements to the plans for the future, there is much to be excited about for Season 2018 / 2019 with discussions commencing or progressing regarding: • Changes in formats for senior competitions that may well create more opportunities for coming together as a club incorporating multiple junior, women's and men's matches. • Investment in female friendly facilities in partnership with Henley FC.

Annual Report 5 July 2018

PRESIDENT’S REPORT continued

• Greater connection with local cricket stakeholders including Community Cricket Clubs and schools. • Stronger links to the Henley High School Cricket Program and future potential for indoor cricket facilities on the school grounds. • Henley High School In-Door Nets: In-door net developments are proposed for sport at HHS. HHS is to erect a large sporting facility replacing the bitumen courts situated opposite the school on the John Mitchell Reserve. The facility is planned to host several sports, but not cricket due to floor issues. However, the present in-door facility may be modified to incorporate in-door cricket nets. This is an exciting concept and if brought to a successful conclusion will provide a needed facility for us and other clubs in the west and north-west suburbs. We intend to work closely with HHS in an endeavour to bring this concept to fact. • Revamped coaching structures to provide greater support and feedback across all grades. • Constitutional changes to reflect modern practice and make-up of the club, including specific mention of female cricketers and administrators.

Thank you to all involved in the work listed above. We need to continue to work together, put aside personal opinions and focus on the best course of action for the future of the club.

Thank you also to my family for supporting me to take on this role with the club I love. Finally, one big and heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in this great club. We will continue to live to our motto as we take the next steps towards our future success.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Achievements: Others will cover our playing for the season. However, our performance at the Bradman Awards, male and female, gave the Club much kudos. These accolades, and other significant achievements, outside of the Bradman Awards, are listed within this Report. Please seek them out as they reflect favourably on the players and support persons and the Club.

Board of Management: Administration wise we have had an active Board of Management and sub-committees for our juniors and women’s cricket. The Board has been conscientious in its endeavours and all have contributed in positive ways. I can report to members the Club is fortunate in having a Board with diverse skills allowing management of the Club to function to a high level.

Membership: Membership has been maintained at a very good level. Our playing numbers, particularly juniors with split loyalties between school and us, are always a concern. Our non-playing members, the province of Noaline and Denis Brien, remain at good levels. Membership fees play a vital role in funding the activities of the Club.

Volunteers: Outside of the Board we have a set of committed volunteers undertaking the management of much of our fundraising activities. Alan Hutton and Latisha Polkinghorne continue to be the mainstay of the canteen and the activities associated with it. I thank all those who have contributed, in particular the Drews, Annette and Charlie, and Jenny Williams, have seen to it that we have the best afternoon teas in the First Grade while our Second Grade, after a shaky start, have achieved equal success with Julie Russell, Bev Berry and Carmel Short contributing each week. We are fortunate to have 70 persons actively involved each week volunteering to assist with activities at the Club. Thank you all.

Pathways: Our Zone Area of Yorke Peninsula has been a continued success, as has the introductory groups associated with the Club, Milo In2cricket and the Young Eagles Academies – boys and girls, the envy of many other clubs.

Partnerships: I thank our partners over the season. • SACA: Is our largest contributor of cash and in developing our people to perform the required functions within the Club be it coaching or other support initiatives. In dealing with SACA on a day to day basis I have enjoyed the very best of service. • ACA: Australian Cricketers’ Association provided funding to assist with coaching by retaining members within the Premier Grade system. It was a very generous contribution with the added advantage of the expertise of the former players being made available to our Club players. • City of Charles Sturt: Many would not be aware of the support CCS provides for community clubs within its area. The provision of land for our activities (at a discounted license cost) and providing many training courses, all at no cost, to enhance the knowledge and abilities of our volunteers. Again, the service provided is comprehensive and the persons delivering for CCS are ever willing to go the extra step to achieve first rate outcomes. • Henley Football Club has undertaken the refurbishment of the member’s lounge and added perhaps the best veranda in a sporting club environment. The activities of HFC and ourselves have never been closer with joint activities to benefit both organisations. • Hon. Paul Caica MP: Our Patron and retiring Member of Parliament has been a major support since 2002, when he became Member for Colton. Paul’s activities in support of community

clubs has been of the highest order and our thanks go to him for his endeavours on our behalf, particularly regarding the merger process. Paul introduced us to our new Patron, Matt Cowdrey OAM MP – see President’s Report. I know I speak for all in wishing Paul good fortune in the future. • Our Sponsors: Kent Sendy has brought together a group of sponsors who have supported our Club financially over the season. This financial support is pivotal to the Club being able to provide the players with the best facilities, training and playing environment, with the objective of assisting in turning into grand final wins! • Our other support organisations: Henley High School (our No 2 Oval), Woodville Rugby Club (Gleneagles Reserve), Fulham North Primary School (Oval No 4), for their assistance during the season and St Michaels’ College who also assist in our operations. • An objective for the coming season is to further enhance our relationships with our community clubs and our feeder organisations, Henley High School, St Michaels College, and our Zone.

Infrastructure: The year has seen projects commenced some time ago now finalised. • The Curator’s Shed and the Playing Equipment Shed and paving are now complete. • Paving to the flag pole and restoration of the wall surrounding the tree. • In total this infrastructure has added more than $80K to our bottom line. • The hard have been refurbished at a cost of $2.2K. • Padding to the hard surrounds, using the synthetic lawn removed.

Clothing: The Board of Management spent considerable time resolving issues with our clothing. The outcome is we have appointed a different (SA based) supplier and Sharon Harris has taken the role to supervise our clothing requirements. Reference to our Profit and Loss and we sustained a loss for clothing – and had members disappointed with supply issues. We have resolved the issue.

Equipment: Major equipment purchases – other than playing requirements. Purchases of major equipment: • A new barrel mower $6.5K for Henley & Grange Memorial Oval. The mower at H&GMO has been moved to Gleneagles Oval while the unit there is on permanent loan to Fulham Cricket Club. • Our I.T. has extended to purchasing tablets for additional senior grades of 3rdG and 4thG. • A new freezer for the canteen was cost shared with the Henley Football Club ($615.00).

The coming season: • Female Change Rooms – a $500+K major initiative in conjunction with HFC, and an exciting prospect for our women’s teams. • LED Scoreboard – may be delayed due to the cost of the above initiative.

Summary: Many infrastructure initiatives have been achieved putting the Club in a good position to support the “playing side” by providing the best possible infrastructure and facilities.

Annual Report 8 July 2018

TREASURER’S REPORT

The reviewed Financial Statements for the Club for the year ended 30 April 2018 are set out on the following pages. These show a net profit of $27,070 compared to a net profit of $52,603 last season. The result is after bringing to account capital grant monies of $27,349 received from the State and Federal Governments (Office for Recreation and Sport and Stronger Communities Grant) for the new Players’ Equipment storage shed. These grants were once again achieved thanks to the great work by Charlie Rumbelow. However, if we deduct these grant monies, the club had a small Operating Loss of $279.

Significant factors other than the distribution from SACA which affected the result for the year were:

• Prize monies amounting to $9,200 was achieved thanks to the 1st Grade Woman’s cricket team in winning the T20 and One Day Grand Finals. • Sponsorship income thanks to the excellent work from Kent Sendy and his sponsorship team in generating income to $43,863 (2015 / 2016 $39,784) • The canteen and catering produced a profit of $8,702 for the year due to a full year of clubroom use, the success of our functions that were held there, and to the committed work of Latisha Polkinghome, Alan Hutton, and the team. • Grant monies from the Australian Cricket Association amounting to $17,500. • The outstanding success of Denis Brien's (Rocka) book “All The Kings’ Men” which has produced a profit thus far of $4,689, and still growing. • Reimbursement of the legal fees ($7,500) from the South Australian Cricket Association re the merger fiasco.

However, there were some significant increases in expenditure on the previous year that the Board of Management needs to address. • Grounds and Maintenance expense was up on the previous year due to the Club having to combat certain issues such as, the spring renovation to the Henley Oval ground surface, the irrigation system at the Henley High School’s turf wicket area, repairs to the practice hard wicket matting, repairs to the diesel roller and mower, just to name a few. • Hire of Clubrooms for this year was for the full season. • Coaching expenses are up on the previous year due to coaching fee increases.

FINANCIAL POSITION As at 30 April 2018 the net assets of the Club were $136,324 (2016 / 2017 - $109,254). During the year the new Playing Equipment storage shed was completed and added $27,728 value to our facilities. Cash at Bank was $32,296.

LOOKING AHEAD The club is in a sound financial position but must not only maintain but build on its revenue sources and control expenditure outlays. If we can meet these challenges, then I am sure this will assist in achieving on field success.

I would like to thank the Board of Management for their support and assistance throughout the year. I also would like to thank the fundraising teams, both senior and junior, all the volunteers, sponsors and Club members for their support of the Club during the 2017 / 2018 season.

CRICKET DIRECTOR

This season was challenging for the First Grade with the loss of Trent Kelly who was a remarkable player and leader for our club, however due to significantly increased work commitments he has had to hang up the boots. We also lost Spencer Johnson due to a stress fracture in his ankle. His had a great impact in our premiership season and we look forward to him getting back to full fitness and challenging for Redbacks selection.

Kelvin Smith won the Bradman Medal and had an outstanding beginning to his season, with such a high standard set, it was challenging to maintain this in the second half of the season. Kelvin has matured into a great leader of our club and we look forward to him getting back to becoming a regular with the Redbacks.

Daniel Drew again had a very good season sharing the Darren Lehmann medal for the most valuable 20/20 cricketer in the competition. We were also very pleased with the development of Bailey Capel in making his first in First Grade.

The loss of Leigh Drennan’s leadership and talent was felt by all and our club will miss him however, we wish him every success back in . We will continue to aim to put the best First Grade team on the park that we can, whilst ensuring we provide opportunities for talented players to progress to First Grade where possible.

The improvement of Eric Carrington and Nick Crouch was very pleasing for the club and they are both exciting prospects, together with Lachlan Pointon who had a great BankSA carnival followed up by a very good innings of 80 in the last Second Grade game. We look forward to working hard during the off season to ensure we get back to the top of the ladder. We have some very exciting talent in our club and the future is bright. There was plenty of this talent in our Second Grade under Nick Maegraith and next season we will be pushing to get back to the finals with this young side. Our Third- Grade team, led by Jordan Capel, was highly competitive for most of the season and with a little luck would have gone to the finals. Our Fourth-Grade team was ably led by Jack Dugan who did a great job in providing opportunities for numerous young players. As a club we are very grateful to all our team leaders and those volunteers who gave up so much of their time to help put our teams on the park. Our aim is to begin extra off-season training with a group of players together with Warwick Raymond.

I would like to place on record the clubs thanks to all our coaches for their tireless work together with the playing group. We have been successful in developing a culture that is the envy of other clubs. We will be doing everything we can to maintain this culture together with pushing to go back to the top of the premiership ladder next season.

WOMENS’ REVIEW

Season 2017 / 2018 was a great year for women’s cricket at West Torrens. With two First Grade recruits in Kayla and Tahlia McGrath, the return of Tayla Gordon and many of our Young Eagles progressing to the Second Grade we had a total of 37 players pull on the navy and gold for our two senior teams this season, including 4 new capped 1st graders.

The Second Grade as always have been a shining example of the talent that is coming through the female pathways, and although not the most successful seasons according to the ladders finishing 6 and 7th out of 10 teams in the T20 and One-Day competitions respectively, the girls attitude, sportsmanship and teamwork were outstanding.

As well as other clubs commenting on the girl’s “Spirit of Cricket”, one umpire was so impressed she wrote to the Club expressing how thrilled she was with the girls' attitude, effort and ability for girls so young – apparently, they were all aged 10-15 except one old lady of 27! Their “Spirit of Cricket” was well and truly alive! With some more guidance and on-field leadership we will be seeing some great results from the Second Grade in the coming seasons.

I couldn’t have written a better season scenario for the First Grade, losing only 2 of the 10 games before Christmas, we were sitting top on the One-Day and a close second on the T20 ladder, and with Lauren Ebsary and Tahlia McGrath both returning in the new year, we looked in great shape to make finals.

Although the results did not reflect it, this time we lost many of our key players in Caroline Ward, Tayla Gordon and Emily Hinze for six week blocks due to injury. This gave many of our Second Grade the opportunity to move up into the First Grade as well our current team being able to take on more responsibility. Brooke Harris in particular took charge with both ball and bat and capped of an amazing season by earning her player of the match in the One-Day Grand Final, and her first Medal.

We ended having a dream into finals, and as fate would have it taking out both the T20 and One- Day flags, a feat we hadn’t yet achieved in 1st grade. It was amazing to look out from the grounds at both these games and see the amount of blue and gold supporters. Thank you to everyone who came out to watch and celebrate with us, especially Leigh Drennan. (Travelled from Brisbane).

With almost the same team set to take the field next season, we will be looking to replicate the results in 2018 / 2019.

JUNIOR CRICKET REVIEW

THE YEAR IN REFLECTION From a performance point of view the stand out of the season was our two WSJCA teams playing off for the premiership with the Gold team being successful on the day but the final was a showcase of the talent for the club in years to come. The biggest positive out of this is that 9 of the 22 players were still eligible for U12s. That stat alone is very positive for the future years of our club. It was also great to see many 7 and 8 year olds learning their craft in the WSJCA U12s.

Our Statewide U12 side lost one game by 3 runs which cost them a spot in the finals. Our U14 Reds made the semi-final after having a very good season and despite on a wet track on day 1 and only making 85 they never gave up and in the end only lost by 3 wickets late on day 2 to the eventual premiers. The U14 Whites had many players missing from their side during the year covering for other teams and despite this upheaval were in the running for the finals up until the last minor round game.

The U16 Reds and U16 Whites were competitive and played some great cricket during the year but due to the unavailability of many players to college commitments and having to cover for injured players in seniors did not finish in the finals. The positive out of the shortage of players in U16s saw many individuals gain valuable experience throughout the season with many 11 and 12 year olds playing U14s and 10 different U14 Whites players play U16 Whites throughout the year. Three new players from the Yorke Peninsula who are eligible for U14s played under 16 Whites. Great experience for all those boys who acquitted themselves very well and it was great to see all those players and their parents with the right attitude by putting the club first in helping out when short of players in the U16 Whites.

Our relationship continues to develop with our regional partners on the York Peninsula, thanks in large way to Adam Davies and Lauren Kakoschke, being our conduit between the YP and WTDCC. As an additional bonus the agreement that the Denis Brien Shield, which is a game between WT U14 players v YP U14 players will now be played every year at the very picturesque Arthurton ground.

It must also be noted that each week over the cricket season, our U16 and U14 teams talent increased thanks to a consistent group of players coming from the YP to play at their own cost. A big thank you to all the YP parents for being so committed in bringing your children to our games - which is not only a financial cost, but also a 4 hour round trip every Saturday, all with a common aim of providing a pathway for country cricket players to be integrated into the Premier League and enhance their opportunity to make State Under Age Squads.

As a Club, we look forward to you all playing again next year along with some additional YP players who have already made enquiries about playing in our under-age teams for the coming season.

Our junior program is very strong and over the past season our Club was represented 31 times by junior boys and girls, in Premier League, State Junior Redback teams, State Representative Sides and WSJCA / SAMCA teams. The winter SACA State under age squads have just been announced and congratulations to the following players for their selection: U19s – Capel, Crouch, Pointon, U17s – Carrington, U15s Hawke, Marshall, Reuther, Terry.

I thank all members of the Junior Committee for their continued effort to foster the growth of cricket at West Torrens and their collective efforts are outstanding. Week after week during the summer the committee performed their duties without bias and for the benefit of the WTDCC and all in a voluntary capacity. These volunteer roles included BBQ Cooks, team managers, scorers, and communication officers in each grade and data entry personnel. Getting all of our 7 underage teams on the park each week, at the right ground, at the right time, with the right number of players and the team managers team lists ready to go. Well done to all involved. The club would not function without the assistance of committed people and I thank you very much for your valuable assistance. Over….. Annual Report 15 July 2018

JUNIOR CRICKET REVIEW Continued

A special mention to Catherine Terry for arranging our very successful junior presentation evening at Grange Golf Club, with 150+ in attendance. A big thank you also to Emily Smith in following up with all coaches and arranging for all the trophies to be made and ready in such a short time frame. Last but not least, a big thank you to Julie Brown as our Junior Secretary for all the work above and beyond the normal call of duty. I have no doubt all parents probably liaise with Julie via email more than their spouses.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank our sponsors for supporting the junior part of our great club during the past year.

BENDIGO BANK YOUNG EAGLES ACADEMIES

YOUNG EAGLES ACADEMY – GIRLS During our third season of the Girls Young Eagles Academy we saw plenty of girls returning, as well as some new faces. It was pleasing to see many of the girls who have progressed through the Academy over the last few seasons have gone on to fill the majority of the second-grade woman’s team this summer.

The Young Eagles trained for approximately 10 sessions throughout the season on Wednesday nights before the senior woman’s training. This inspired the girls as they were able to see that a large number of women, making up both the First and Second Grade teams, had progressed through Young Eagles academies themselves. Furthermore, many of the Young Eagles girls attended the senior training and were provided with the opportunity to play in the Second Grade team later in the season.

Throughout the trainings, there was a focus on developing the girl’s overall skill set. There were opportunities to try wicket keeping and spin bowling and as well as develop a ‘change up’ ball. There was also an emphasis on improving their game sense and decision-making abilities to increase the girl’s confidence. It was pleasing to see a number of girls undertake opportunities to participate in additional trainings or games, including trialling for the State SAPSASA team. This highlights the interest and commitment of our West Torrens girls as well as indicates the growing opportunities there are for girls in cricket.

Next season we look forward to many of the girls returning as well as expanding the Academy numbers to help provide young girls with the opportunity to play cricket. We also plan to put the girls’ skills into practice with the possibility of a friendly game against some of Kensington’s young cricketers, as conducted last season.

Jess (Joseph) and I thoroughly enjoyed coaching the girls and seeing their skills and confidence develop throughout the season. We encourage them and any other girls wanting to give cricket a go to stay tuned for details on the coming season’s Academy.

BENDIGO BANK YOUNG EAGLES ACADEMIES

YOUNG EAGLES ACADEMY – BOYS

This squad continued successfully for its twelfth season and comprised 16 boys from middle to upper Primary school level who also represented Grange, Fulham and Flinders Park Cricket Clubs besides our own in the WSJCA competition on Sundays. The program was conducted by former Test all-rounder Eric Freeman, former State cricketer and Australian baseballer David Mundy and myself. I would like to sincerely thank the Australian Cricketers Association, through their local representative Wayne Phillips, for contributing to the coaching honorariums of Eric and David.

Players were selected through trials at the end of the 2016 - 2017 season and a little over half played with the above Community Clubs with the rest with our own WSJCA Under 14s and Under 12s. Unfortunately, the SACA has decreed that West Torrens must phase out its Community Club teams by 2020. There seems to be no logic in this decision as West Torrens is filling a void as most of our WSJCA players are domiciled in areas where there are no Community Clubs. There are promises that this void will be filled but so far, no action.

The aims of the Young Eagles Academies programs are: • To provide extra coaching for players who will probably play SACA cricket for West Torrens and to assist in the development of players for future RSS, Under 14 and Women’s teams. • To help the players learn more about the game from experienced current and former players. • To provide recreation and fun for 10, 11 and 12-year-old players. • To further increase the profile of the WTDCC in the area by assisting young players from Community clubs.

As in previous seasons Eric, David and I concentrated on the basic skills of correct technique for shot making and bowling action while David honed the fielding skills although each of us participated in all the various segments of the coaching. All senior T20 references (TV shots) were vetoed. Former Test spinner Dan Cullen made several guest appearances and his assistance was very much appreciated and received enthusiastically by the players.

The squad had 10 training sessions and an excellent match against a similar squad from Kensington at Ford Oval Kensington Gardens.

The value of the two Academies (formerly known as Development Squads) is shown by the fact that three former Young Eagles have been awarded SACA player contracts: Brooke Harris (Scorpions) and Spencer Johnson and Daniel Drew (Redbacks). Daniel has won the Bradman Medal for the best player in Men’s 1st Grade and Brooke won the Rolton Medal for the best player in Women’s 1st Grade. Spencer has won the Rob Zadow Medal (Best player in the 50 over Grand Final). 6 Males and 4 Females have played in 1st Grade Premierships including Jess Joseph who has captained two of these. Brooke, Jess, Daniel and Ben Williams have all been selected in SACA 1st Grade Teams of the Year.

MILO In2Cricket REPORT

Our Milo In2Cricket season commenced on Saturday 14 October and finished for the holiday season on December 2. We recommenced on February 3 for the 4 weeks of February. 45 children were registered this season with participation numbers each week steady at around 30-35 for most weeks.

Our Coaches, Liam Dorward (Head Coach), Alex Hutton and Josh Joseph did an amazing job with all the drills and activities. The kids absolutely loved it. As well it was great to have Jess Joseph also make a guest appearance for one of the clinics.

As we had such a large group and the ages and abilities of the group varied so much we trialled splitting the children into groups based on age. We had some great feedback on this and it helped our coaches keep the children engaged by being able to tailor the activities to the individual abilities a little easier.

I would like to thank: Colin Cocks for all his hard work in the past in making our Milo In2Cricket program what it is today and for all his assistance in getting me set up for my first season as Milo In2Cricket Coordinator. Kent Sendy for arranging the coffee van each week, I know I’m not the only parent who appreciated this. Scott Jones for his guidance, support and new ideas. And to the WTDCC Junior Committee for entrusting me to take over from Colin.

SACA have recently advised their long-standing partnership with Milo has come to an end and as such there will be some changes to the Program for next season. There will be more detailed information regarding those changes released in the coming weeks however, I am already looking forward to this season!

Donna Mowling Milo In2Cricket Coordinator

Stan the Statistician from Semmie South says

Erik Carrington (wk) and Lachlan Pointon were selected in the SACA U17 Male Team of the Year. Erik won the C.W.Walker Trophy for the best wicketkeeper of the competition.

Tahlia McGrath became West Torrens’ first female Test player when she debuted against England at North Sydney Oval on 9 November 2017 scoring an admirable 47 (batting at #8) putting on 103 for the 7th wicket with (213 n.o.) and taking 2/45 and 1/12. Current players Caroline Ward and Lauren Ebsary had played prior to coming to West Torrens as had former players Kris Britt, Tunde Juhasz and Andrea McCauley.

Domenic Bess, who played in the 2016 - 2017 West End One Day Cup Premiership for West Torrens, made his Test match debut for England on 24 May 2018 after playing 16 First class games for Somerset. Whilst he didn’t take a wicket he scored 57 (batting at #8) in the second innings. In the Second Test he scored 49 and took 3/33 from his 11 overs.

Other West Torrens players to play Test cricket after leaving West Torrens are: • Merv Waite was compelled to transfer to Glenelg for the 1937 - 1938 season (Residential qualification By-law) and was chosen for the 1938 tour of England where he played two Tests. • In August 1986 Gladstone Small, who played for Warwickshire throughout his career, was chosen for England immediately after a season with West Torrens (1985 - 1986). 17 Tests. • Jeff Crowe was chosen in the New Zealand Test team immediately after returning to Auckland following five seasons with West Torrens and eventually became Test captain. 39 Tests. • Jason Gallian played with West Torrens while at the Australian Cricket Academy (Del Monte - Henley Beach) and soon after went to the UK where he played First Class cricket with Oxford University, Lancashire and Nottinghamshire. He was then chosen in 3 Test matches for England.

Sophie Devine, the New Zealand and Scorpions all-rounder and still a West Torrens registered player has had some excellent figures in ODI’s since the end of our season. She took 3/24 (5.5 overs) v West Indies at Christchurch in March and belted 108 from 61balls (13 x 4, 6 x 6) at Dublin in New Zealand’s score of 418 against Ireland.

Callum Ferguson scored 192 (143b) in his debut for Worcestershire in a List A (One Day for F/C teams) match v Leicestershire in May. This was a record List A score for the Rapids and the highest ever List A score for a registered West Torrens player. He followed this a few days later with 159 n.o. v Northamptonshire and shared a club-record second-wicket stand of 239 with Joe Clarke (122) in the hosts' 348-5.

PLAYER PROFILE

DRENNAN Leigh (Drenno or Lethal) RHB WK B: 10 July 1990

1st Grade Debut - # 526 v Woodville DCC at Woodville Oval, November 2013. 1615 runs @ 29.91 H.S: 110 n.o. v Southern Districts at Bice Oval, March 2017, 4 centuries, 81 catches, 5 stumpings (2 Day), 118 ct. 9 st. (All forms of 1st Grade). 52 x 1st Grade games. Other Cricket Achievements: 2 Day, 50 over and T20 Premierships (2016 - 2017). Charlie Walker Wicketkeeping (SACA) Trophy 2016 – 2017. 1st Grade Captain (Acting). Lethal Leigh Premiership Coach: Women’s 1st Grade 50 over and T20 (2017 - 2018). 2nd Grade 40 over and T20 (2015 - 2016).

All at the Eagles were extremely saddened and dismayed when our erstwhile and universally loved 1st Grade keeper, Leigh Drennan, returned home to Brisbane immediately after Christmas. Leigh had won the Charlie Walker for season 2016 - 2017, played in 3 Premierships that season, was 5th in the SACA Batting Aggregate and had scored a century in the 2-Day Grand Final - but was passed over for a Redbacks contract. When Leigh qualified as a teacher the only contract position he was able to secure was offered in SA – hence his move to us. Just prior to last Christmas he was offered a long-term position in his native Brisbane. Leigh decided he must concentrate on his off-field career.

He came to West Torrens from the Valley Club in Brisbane, via Darwin. I remember ‘phoning him in Darwin after ‘The Wimp’ passed on his number with a message that he was interested in playing and studying in Adelaide. It was one of the most profitable ‘phone calls which I have made for West Torrens. Throughout his school life he attended Redlands College at Wellington Point, a south eastern suburb of Brisbane, before attending University where he was mid-way through a Bachelor of Education (P.E.). Leigh had begun to occupy himself with cricket activities from a very early age. Whilst his parents provided him with ample supplies of different sporting gear when growing up he normally gravitated towards a cricket bat.

He went to Darwin for the off season in 2013 rather than going to England to play because it meant that he could keep studying and where there was no danger of any games being rained out. He then discovered the new SACA Premier League concept while in Darwin and thought he would like to be involved, so made himself available for selection.

Keeping has always been a strength for ‘Drenno’ and something that he loves doing. Whilst not the most visually appealing batsman to watch, he does love a battle and just enjoys batting for long periods of time.

At Henley Oval he also turned his hand to coaching the Women’s squad and did so with much success. Dual Premierships came to the 2nd Grade in 2015 - 2016 and last season he repeated the performance with the 50 over and T20 titles with the 1st Grade.

Leigh is only small in stature, but he is a giant in Character, Loyalty and Support for the West Torrens Cricket Club and his acquaintances. He will be a great asset to any organisation of which he becomes a part. As a former keeper I have enjoyed his great work behind the stumps, loved his batting and appreciated his tremendous love of the Club. His influence on the youth of the Club (both male and female) has been enormously positive.

West Torrens has lost a cornerstone.

JIM FROM DA GYM

Jim’s Quotable Quotes from Da Gym:

SOCCER England Legend Bobby Charlton was asked how he thought the champion England team of 1966 would have fared against the Iceland team which caused a huge upset by defeating England 2-1 to eliminate them from the 2016 European Soccer Championships. "I think we'd have won 1 - 0" he replied. "Only 1-0?" said the reporter. "Yes," said Bobby. "Most of us are in our 70's now!"

Lawrie Jervis (Football writer for The News 1950s and 1960s): Q. Did you go out there planning to ……….. The late Jeff Pash – SANFL 1939 Magarey Medallist, University degree, Post Grad Diploma holder and Inspector of High Schools: A. The aim was a tri-partite but multi-faceted stratagem, the objective of which was an endeavour to gain significant leverage and dominance forward of the pivotal position to achieve our goal. Lawrie Jervis (not the sharpest knife in the draw) Q. You mean you wanted to control the Forward line? Jeff Pash: A. Precisely Lawrie
