REVIEW - ROUND 1 Scores: Walkerville 9/278 (M Reid 79, P Sarson 88, J Hutchinson 44) defeated Unley 125 (L Panzarino 3/20, P Reid 2/37, W Walker 2/26). A2 – ROUND 1 VS UNLEY AT UNLEY –

The start to the 2009/10 season was with a few new faces to the team and a new warm up game bounce ball which no side could get a grasp off. The win of the toss and backing the long batting line up, we decided to have a hit. With the new opening partnership of Ben Duncan and new comer Nick Cheary starting and ending just as quick with Cheary out in the third over too a well guided cut to point. Duncan soon followed leaving Walkerville 2 for 15 but from here enter Mark Reid and Peter Sarson who consolidated then tore the game away from Unley with Chopper placing the spinner to the boundary 3 balls in a row then the fourth saw his stumps rattled for a well made The calm before the storm as the A grade boys 79. Enter Hutchy, I had heard a lot about this guy loosened up before their clash with Unley. and when the second ball went for six I gathered it was all true. A quick fire 44 from only 25 balls, with one six placing a dent to the oppositions team managers car. From here Sarson fell for a man of the match 88, Paul “Wooly” Reid chipped in with 20 odd and Powelly back into the A’s added 14 topped off a great team batting performance ending at 9 for 278.

In taking the field we had a good feeling about the rest of the day and big Will bowled an extraordinary spell of 10 overs straight with the new ball having Unley in trouble immediately at 3 for 25, Will ended with the impressive figures of 2-26.

In asking for one run out per game we grabbed Peter Sarson in full flight on his way to 88. our first with a good pick up from Powelly and great work from Chopper with the gloves to get our first for the season this was soon followed by another this time Powelly miss fielding and Sarson throwing to glove man Chopper who finished the job again. Through the middle overs “Wooly” Reid chipped in with a good spell of tight grabbing himself two , but the main man with ball once again was medium pacer Leo Panzarino bowling a great spell of 8 overs 3 for 20 with two bowled. This ended the Unley innings all out 125.

A great win for game one but we must take that into game two against Old Scotch as they also had a good win. Turning to the two day game we must endeavour to bat 80 over’s along with bowling maidens and sticking to our game plan. Club Captain Damien Miller showing the style Good work boys lets keep the targets in mind up that took him to 1/11 or 7 overs. to the Christmas break.

and a solid 10 no. from tweeker Leaky gave Matho great support to push upto 8/168 at the end of the innings with Matho’s swashbuckling 28 no. of 65 balls an obvious highlight.

There were a few names in Brighton’s list that had some of the more experienced Cats lads having nightmares from previous years, however we had the runs on the board and an enthusiastic line up to give it a real shake. We started well with Jimmy and Chainsaw on the money however luck was against us as their openers survived in two completely different styles. One would take a chance and hit through

A family affair on the side lines as Maxy Walker the field with confidence where the other was advised little Billy about his batting the exact opposite however they battled away performance. Yet again left stranded!!! and at 0/60, applauses came from the opposition for a well made 50 for guess which one. BI – ROUND 1 VS BRIGHTON AT WALKERVILLE – Both Johnno and Matho had sustained injuries as Brighton was starting to get away from us so we It was a new feeling for most of the B grade with needed someone to impose himself on the game. having to umpire and score (hope “Smoker” is Enter Dan “Moose” Elkins being thrown the ball feeling better) our matches as we had been in A3 he bowled a great spell ably supported by Pete for a the last few seasons and did not have to do Sarsons brother they slowed the run rate with this however the day started very well with us Moose having one chance put down (never seen winning the toss and electing to bat on what CJ drop one ever) and then claiming two scalps in looked a nice hard . It was a credit to our two balls to have Brighton 2/72. The free flowing curator Graham who got the pitch up after having opener was still going as Brighton again forged some personal issues earlier in the week. into a winning position. Leaky was thrown the We opened the innings with two contrasting ball to spin the opposition out however a double styles, the unorthodox, free swinging CJ and the bouncer and a couple of fully’s made it hard for techniquely correct, determined Nelson however us to build pressure. The nature of spin bowling is if bowled the ball of last century that one day you will get hit and be slightly of then Nelson got the best ball of this century your game where the next you can really let it rip unfortunately it was the first ball of the innings and claim a five wicket haul. The challenge for that knocked over his stumps and not the last. Leaky is to come back hard and back his ability At 1 for 0 off 1 ball our day could only improve! next game. In looking for answers the skipper Johnno Mayberry (young Magnum) strode to the turned to young Adam Rurtherford for a break wicket and looked good hitting his first boundary through. With his Glen McGrath pressure he through the covers unfortunately his stride was claimed a wicket and with the introduction of Chainsaw we were able to dismiss the opener lessoned as a knee injury flared up. He made a st stylish 18 when out LBW after CJ had been (great catch at 1 slip) and give ourselves a dismissed. Young Orbie blasted a boundary before chance at victory. Needing another 40 runs of 20 he was out as we slumped to 4/42. Pete Sarson’s overs with 6 wickets in hand we were still up brother “Mick”and Matty Varvounis built a solid against it however to the boys credit not one of partnership to resurrect the innings before Matty their heads dropped and we fought the game was out followed next ball by Chainsaw Craig right out. They went past our score with about 12 Cowland who hit the ball of the middle of the bat overs left but we were still chasing bonus points straight onto his stumps. It was a nice gesture by wickets. Unfortunately Johnno had to be sub the Brighton boys as they applauded the skipper fielded because of injury and Matty Varvounis and to the crease only realising that it was also a Leaky had to work so we called on Kerran hatrick ball and that was why they were in so Wingard (straight from Mt Gambier), Magnum and close to the batsman. It was left to the tail to push our score past 150, Moose Elkins claimed another 2 great scalps a hard hitting 19 from young speedster Jimmy including one of the best send offs seen considering we had already lost the game to ROUND 2 finish with impressive figures of 4/40 and young ROUND 2 speedster Jimmy Plaistow also claimed a wicket th th even though Matho did his best to drop it!! (17 and 24 October) Brighton finished 7/212 and were clearly the better side on the day. A2 – ROUND 2 VS OLD SCOTCH AT WALKERVILLE
