In the absence of any Second XI cricket and the One Day Cup competition, the Bob Willis Trophy reports have been expanded to include a write up for each day’s play as well as the full scorecards. Sadly all fixtures were played behind closed doors so hopefully these extended reports will enable readers to get the feeling of actually being at the game! In addition, the Somerset Women’s team reports plus the Boys and Girls Pathway write ups are included in the first half of the book as they now come under the remit of Somerset CCC rather than the Somerset Cricket Board.

  • Junior Records 2020
JUNIOR RECORDS (correct as at 1/4/20) West Torrens Cricket Club - Junior Records The S.A.C.A. Junior grades began with an Under 16 Schoolboys competition in the January 1948 school holidays and later became an Under 17 competition (January 1968). It reverted to Under 16 for one season 2011-12 against the wishes of the majority of Clubs. This competition was known as the SACA Schoolboys competition from 1947-48 to 1973-74, Shell Shield from 1974-75 to 2003-04 and then became the Bank SA Shield in 2004-05. Originally the Carnival was conducted over 3 weeks in a round robin form with each team playing every other team – a series of 11 matches without finals. This was later reduced to a two week tournament with teams placed in two sets or zones and playing a series of 6 matches plus a cross zone final series. The Commonwealth Bank competitions began as single Under 16 and Under 14 grades in 1978-79 and expanded to Red and White divisions in each age group in 1988-89. The Club did not field any Under 14 teams in 1982-83. No Under 16 White team was fielded in 1991-92, 1992-93 and 1996-97 nor an Under 14 White team from 1994-95 to 1996-97. The home ground for the junior teams was at the University Playing Fields at West Beach until the end of 1984-85 with a short time at the Adelaide Airport Oval. A hard wicket was put down on Kings Reserve West and used from 1985-86 until the end of 1988-89.

  • Wisden Review
Schools Cricket in 2017 SCHOOLS CRICKET IN 2017 REVIEW BY DOUGLAS HENDERSON For the first time, Wisden’s schools averages include Twenty20 matches. Some see this as a step too far, as though equating a song from a musical with a three-act opera. Others welcome an acceptance of what, especially for smaller schools, is the reality: that many, or most, fixtures are 20-over games. Even in some larger schools with a strong cricket pedigree, the pressure to perform in academic league tables – whatever happened to the idea of a good all-round, liberal education? – has endangered all-day games. Saturdays used to offer a bastion, but more and more have become 35-over affairs. It remains quite possible to fit two 40-over innings into an afternoon, yet young players see so much faffing about from the professionals that 20 an hour (built into the regulations for the last 60 minutes of a declaration game) seems almost laughable. Another consequence of the relentless drive for examination success is that schools can struggle to field their strongest XI; some masters are forced to resort to complex spreadsheets of player availability, even for weekend matches. Douglas, are you happy with this musical/opera image? If exams – and the pressure they exert – remain the biggest headache for those in charge of schools cricket, there are welcome signs of an analgesic. A-level grades are now determined by one set of final exams, rather than two. The fact that papers taken in Year 12 no longer count towards the final mark should, in theory, allow greater participation.

  • Experiences and Understandings of a Group of Sri Lankan Migrants in Australia with Type Two Diabetes
Controlling Diabetes or Keeping Life under Control? Experiences and Understandings of a Group of Sri Lankan Migrants in Australia with Type Two Diabetes Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March Two Thousand and Fourteen Prabhathi Basnayake Ralalage Centre for Health and Society University of Melbourne Thesis Abstract Diabetes is a key public health priority and a major health concern for many migrant communities including the Sri Lankan community here in Australia. Understanding people’s comprehensions of the disease and its management is essential to successfully address any related issues in order to avoid premature deaths and high public health costs. According to many health reports published over the past years Sri Lankan migrants have been identified as having a significantly higher prevalence of type two diabetes in Australia compared to the general Australian population. This ethnography revolves around a group of first generation Sri Lankan migrants with type two diabetes in Australia. This thesis relates their story of encountering and dealing with difficulties and complexities of migrant life while having to build a ‘successful’ life in Australia and also having to concurrently manage a chronic illness. While arguing that understanding of diabetes management cannot be just reduced or confined to level of compliance to medical advice and blood sugar measurement readings on the glucometer, I point out in the research that the stories of Sri Lankans with diabetes in a developed country are different to the stories of other South Asian migrants with diabetes living elsewhere in the world as examined in other studies.
