PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Once again, the season did not have the on-field success we would have liked from a premiership perspective. Setting high standards in the previous 2 seasons makes it difficult to emulate on-field success year on year. However, this is what the best clubs do, and it is something that we need to strive for across all grades in future. Having said this, I will once again leave the commentary on the playing side of the club to others and restrict this report to off-field performance and the future vision for the club.

Financially we have been relatively stable, thanks to some grants and a significant cash donation. Although with the absence of any significant prizemoney we will probably record a small operating loss if we do not include one-off revenue from this season. However, I do not see this as a cause for alarm as there are ample opportunities for us to increase our revenue and decrease our expenditure if the balance sheet gets tighter. Thanks to Gary Rennie for his great work looking after the books for us.

Our relationship with co-tenants Henley Football Club continues to gain strength thanks to the support and collegiality of former Patron and HFC President Paul Caica. Both clubs have been committed to developing the facility at Henley Oval - at the start of the season WTDCC performed some work on drainage around the pitch square which will allow quicker recovery of the pitches following football season and enhance the centre playing surface, particularly during wet weather, for the football club. Paul continues to work amazingly hard with his committee at HFC on the plans for the Female Changeroom Facilities and upgraded lighting for Henley Oval, which the WTDCC is supportive of and intends to work collaboratively with the HFC for the benefit of both clubs' members and the local community.

Some other dot points on significant achievements this season and a broad thank you to those involved: • Winning the Premier Club of the Year Award at the SACA Community Cricket Awards. • Becoming the first Premier Club to have Live Scoring all games across all grades including senior men, women and juniors on MyCricket. • Running a very successful series of Pink Stumps events in partnership with the McGrath Foundation. • Continued exceptional performance in sourcing sponsorship income. • Updated Code of Conduct and Complaint Procedures (now available on the website). • The naming of the Denis Brien Training Centre in recognition of 50 years' service to the club. • Purchase of memorabilia display boards for the clubrooms. • Further aesthetic and safety improvements to the training facilities and storage areas.

I continued to represent Premier Cricket Clubs on the Premier Cricket Funding Group and at various Cricket Connects forums and meetings. Jess Joseph, Tony Jones, Matt Loveder and Daryl Marshall were also involved in various SACA forums and subcommittees and I thank them representing the club with distinction. I will again acknowledge the SACA on their vision to bring together cricket stakeholders to build the future of the game in this state and believe we will start to see some distinct outcomes in the near future.

This will be my final report as President as I announced to the Board several months ago that I would not be seeking re-election. There is much we can be proud of during my time back with the club; the Men's Triple Premiership, the Women's Double Premiership and winning the Premier Club of the Year Award. However, there is always room for improvement, and I encourage the next Board of Management to continue to build on structures to support player development across all grades and invest strongly to enable a high-performance environment that will culminate in on-field success. I believe we can find many efficiencies in the way we operate off-field and need to explore contemporary models of governance and administration in collaboration with the SACA.

I would like to thank those who steadfastly supported me in my term as Chairman and then President and were willing to stand-up for the vision we had for our club. I could not have achieved anything in the role without the unwavering support and counsel of Matt Loveder, Brenton Woolford, Kent Sendy, Denis Brien and Tony Jones in particular. I would also like to offer my thanks to Sharon Harris and Julie Brown, who have also concluded their time on the Board, for their outstanding contributions as Women's Coordinator and Registrar, respectively. I strongly support the vision of Brenton and Mark Harrity for the future of the club to be of a high-performance focus and I hope that with ongoing

Annual Report 6 July 2019 PRESIDENT’S REPORT consultation and collaboration with other key WTDCC officials, they will be able to realise this concept.

Finally, thank you to my family - Belinda, Hettie, Angus, Hamish and Winnie for supporting me in this role, while I was spending so much time trying to lead WTDCC to the next level both on and off the field. I look forward to being able to spend that time with you now.

Annual Report 7 July 2019 SECRETARY’S REPORT

Achievements: Grade clubs are subject to audit by SACA and other bodies, each year. The most recent review of clubs saw WTDCC awarded the Premier Club of the Year Award at the SACA Community Cricket Awards. President, Scott Jones, mentioned this in his report in the March Eagle Eye – it is an achievement and reflects positively on the management of the Club, and covers, not only the running of the Club, our commitment to improving infrastructure, but our support of functions such as the Mayor’s Long Table, Pink Stumps Day (a Junior Committee initiative), our input to developing cricket in our Zone – the Denis Brien Shield - and our assistance in hosting cricket matches – CA Under 19’s, Country Carnival, as well as the manner in which the Club is organised (policies) and conducted.

Others will cover, in depth, our playing for the season. However, a comment on our team achievements which were not as we anticipated. We had four teams represent us in the SACA finals: • Grand Final runners up for senior men 4th grade in the T20 competition • Senior Women 1st grade in the T20 competition – also runners up • U16Red team made the finals but were eliminated prior to the Grand Final. • U16 White were in the T20 Grand Final Playing members of the Club also featured highly in the individual awards in the Bradman Medal and Rolton Medal.

Board of Management: Administration wise we have had an active Board of Management and sub-committees for our women’s cricket, juniors and our development areas in our Zone and the junior academies. The Board has been conscientious in its endeavours, and while not always in agreement on all topics, all have contributed in positive ways. I can report to members the Club is fortunate in having a Board with diverse skills allowing management of the Club to function to a high level.

The advent of our new Constitution, splitting the Board into two groups to maintain a continuity of knowledge and other factors, sees this year, the first for two-year terms of office on re-election – other than candidates filling the unexpired terms of resigned members (one year).

Retiring Board Members: At the time of this report, for the coming AGM, the following persons are retiring or not offering themselves for re-election: • Scott Jones, Life Member and President, has led the Club for the past two years, since he presented our submission to SACA not to merge. He has had significant input to our policies, and much of our liaison with other bodies. Scott’s input will be missed. • Matt Loveder has resigned as Chairman. Matt has guided our meetings throughout the year, achieving outcomes in a timely manner. • Andrew Capel has served the Club since being part of the Junior Committee and moving to the Board of Management. Andrew’s sporting and management expertise will be missed. • Julie Brown is not re-nominating. Julie has developed the position of Registrar, which is new to the Club, and has conducted the demanding functions of the position to an extremely high degree – assisting the Treasurer regarding subscriptions has been a boost to our efficiency and finances. • Sharon Harris has been our Women’s’ Coordinator for several years. Sadly, daughter Brooke is leaving us, and Sharon has resigned her position. Not only did Sharon conduct the affairs of our women but implemented and managed our initiative to overcome our clothing distribution difficulties – Sharon set in place strategies which have produced a favourable outcome. • Bengy Paolo has relinquished the role of Child Support Officer due after several years in the role. On behalf of our membership I record our thanks to each person mentioned above.

Membership: Membership has been maintained at a very good level. Our playing numbers, particularly juniors with split loyalties between school and us, are always a concern. Our non-playing members, the province of Noaline and Denis Brien, remain at good levels. Membership fees play a vital role in funding the activities of the Club.

Annual Report 8 July 2019 SECRETARY’S REPORT

Volunteers: We are fortunate in having many volunteers undertaking the management of our Club. Alan Hutton and Latisha Polkinghorne continue to be the mainstay of the canteen and the activities associated with it. I thank all those who have contributed, in particular the Drews, Annette and Charlie, and Jenny Williams, have seen to it that we have the best afternoon teas in the First Grade while our Second Grade, have achieved equal success with Julie Russell taking up the reigns. Richard Williams and Peter Hutton have been active too. Particularly on Saturday and Player Selection nights. We are fortunate to have over 70 persons actively involved each week volunteering to assist at the Club.

Pathways: Our Zone Area of Yorke Peninsula has been a continued success, as has the introductory groups associated with the Club, Blast, and the Young Eagles Academies – boys and girls, the envy of many other clubs. Please refer to Daryl Marshall’s Junior Report for further details.

Partnerships: I thank our partners over the season. • SACA: Is our largest contributor of cash and in developing our people to perform the required functions within the Club be it coaching or other support initiatives. In dealing with SACA on a day to day basis I have enjoyed the very best of service. • ACA: Australian Cricketers’ Association provided funding to assist with coaching by retaining members within the Premier Grade system. ACA provide a very generous contribution with the added advantage of the expertise of the former players being made available to our Club players. Again, when contacted ACA are very positive people and a pleasure with whom to interact. • City of Charles Sturt: Many would not be aware of the support CCS provides for community clubs within its area. The provision of land for our activities (at a discounted license cost) and providing many training courses, all at no cost, to enhance the knowledge and abilities of our volunteers. Again, the service provided is comprehensive and the persons delivering for CCS are ever willing to go the extra step to achieve first rate outcomes. Lisa Will of the CCS has advised she is leaving. Lisa has been a very active source in promoting sport and training and I thank her for her untiring efforts over many seasons. • Henley Football Club. The refurbishment of the member’s lounge and veranda have “kicked in” providing an excellent club environment. The activities of HFC and ourselves continues to thrive with the new Women’s Changerooms finally about to come to fruition. • Thank you to our Patron, Matt Cowdrey OAM MP, who has actively supported us throughout the year. • Our Sponsors: Kent Sendy has brought together a group of sponsors who have supported our Club financially over the season. This financial support is pivotal to the Club being able to provide the players with the best facilities, training and playing environment, with the objective of grand final wins! Our major sponsor remains as the Grange Hotel and I thank them for their continued support. • Support from our other organisations has continued. Henley High School (our No 2 Oval) had a malfunction with their watering system, coinciding with the drought, which left the oval in a very poor state. It has now been fixed. Woodville Rugby Club (Gleneagles Reserve), Fulham North Primary School (Oval No 4), for their assistance during the season and St Michaels’ College, in particular Roger Dugan, has assisted in our operations. • The Woodville Rugby Club is undergoing a complete knock-down and re-build of the clubrooms. This will provide an up-to-date facility to conduct our games.

Infrastructure: We finalised several initiatives last season. This season we have “had a breather”.

Annual Report 9 July 2019 SECRETARY’S REPORT

The main projects include: • The erecting of the “Western Walk of Recognition” – still to be completed but picket fencing has been erected and will feature plaques to recognise the activities of persons, and teams, in the past, who have provided significant support to the Club. • The hard have been refurbished at a cost of $2.2K. • Padding to the hard surrounds, using the synthetic lawn removed under the above dot point, has been put in place.

Equipment: Major equipment/facilities purchases – other than playing requirements. • The City of Charles Sturt and SACA provided funds ($20K) to install drainage to the cricket pitch area. This will assist in water removal enabling the pitch to recover sooner after rain. • A new roller has been purchased to be housed at Gleneagles (when their re-build is complete). • Our I.T. has been extended to purchasing tablets, power packs and internet connection, for all grades, senior men, senior women and juniors. WTDCC is the first Premier Club to provide on- line information across the board. • A new two-door refrigerator for the canteen has been purchased – to increase the ability of the canteen to cater for our needs. • Moveable Walls/Sponsor Display panel – two moveable walls and a sponsor display panel have been purchased. The items were manufactured by the same company which renovated the members lounge. The outcome is we now have space to display our memorabilia on structures that complement the HFC refurbishment of the member’s lounge. • Two marquees and carry trollies.

The coming season: • Funding has been applied for to cover the training nets. Both the concrete and turf nets. The turf nets will have padding added to the southern end (to stop balls and reduce wear). This is an expensive initiative of about $17K of which we will be required to contribute 50%. • The new roller for Gleneagles has already been approved ($5.5K). • LED Scoreboard – may be delayed (again) due to the cost of the above initiative. • HFC have requested support with initiatives as well (which we wish to accommodate) which include, among other things, in the immediate future women’s change facilities, and further out replacing the oval lights.

Summary: In the past few seasons many infrastructure and equipment initiatives have been achieved putting the Club in a good position to support the “playing side” by providing the best possible infrastructure and facilities. However, this coming season our financial position may be adversely impacted as costs mount and our income remains (good) but at a constant level, with the likelihood of the two major bonus income items of 2018 - 19, a gift of $25K and the $10K awarded to Denis Brien as a local sporting hero, amounting to $35K, are not likely to be repeated. We need to look to maintain and increase income and contain or reduce costs!

Charlie Rumbelow Secretary

Annual Report 10 July 2019 TREASURER’S REPORT

Treasurer’s Report The reviewed Financial Statements for the Club for the year ended 30 April 2019 are set out on the following pages showing a net profit of $17,351 compared to a net profit of $27,070 in the previous year (included a capital grant of $27,249). On adding back Depreciation of $7,745 the Club had a cash operating profit of $25,096. The result includes a significant donation from a loyal life member amounting to $25,000, along with a Westfield local heroes community grant of $10,000.

Some of the other significant movements affecting the operating result were as follows: • SACA Distribution amounting to $49,545, an increase of $9,545 on the previous year • Sponsorship income of $41,659 thanks again to the great work by Kent Sendy. • Canteen and Catering revenue $35,787 (cost $27,526) generated a profit of $8,261 for the year. Once again this was achieved due to the success of the club functions held including the Pink Stumps evening and the excellent work again carried out by Latisha Polkinghorne, Alan Hutton, Peter Hutton, Richard and Jenny Williams, and their team of assistants. • ACA grant monies amounting to $15,000 - engaging our ACA members within our Club. • Administration and Honorariums had an increase of $2,965 due to honorarium payments to a club member for the overseas player's accommodation, the canteen convener, the secretary and the treasurer. • Club Room Hire saw an increase of $6,381 and relates to electricity, telephone and cleaning costs carried over from the previous year. • Club clothing cost control due to the introduction of the online store. • Cricket Equipment and expense reduction due to a stock on hand correction.

Financial Position As at 30 April 2019 the net assets of the Club were $153,675 compared with $136,324 in 2017 - 2018. During the year the Club was able to invest $40,000 in a Term deposit at the Bendigo Bank. This was brought about by utilizing the $25,000 donation plus excess funds from our operating accounts. Cash at Bank in our operating accounts was $10,014.

Looking Ahead The Club is in a healthy financial position but like most sporting clubs we must seek new revenue sources and be conservative in our spending so we can maintain this financial position. If we achieve this, then it can assist in our on-field success.

Once again, I thank the board members for their assistance, the fundraising teams, the volunteers, sponsors and club members for their support to the Club during the 2018/2019 season.

Report on the financial report

I have reviewed the accompanying financial report of West Torrens District Cricket Club Inc (WTDCC) which comprises of the Balance Sheet as at 30 April 2019, and the Income & Expenditure Statement.

Committee’s responsibility for the financial report The committee of WTDCC is responsible for the preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view. The committee determines that the internal control is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view and is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

My responsibility My responsibility is to express a conclusion on the financial report based on my review. A review of a financial report consists of making enquiries, primarily of persons responsible for financial and accounting matters, and applying analytical and other review procedures. A review is substantially less in scope than an audit conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards and consequently does not enable me to obtain assurance that I would become aware of all significant matters that might be identified in an audit. Accordingly, I do not express an audit opinion.

Conclusion Based on my review, which is not an audit, I have not become aware of any matter that makes me believe that the financial report of the association is not in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 including: giving a true and fair view of the entity’s financial position as at 30 April 2018 and of its performance for the year ended on that date.

Annual Report 14 July 2019 CRICKET DIRECTOR

The 2018/19 season was a disappointing one at senior level in the Men’s program. Following the remarkable effort three years ago which was the most successful season at first grade level in our club’s history, we have achieved disappointing results and we look forward to next season with the aim of once again challenging for senior premierships in our club.

Kelvin Smith was again outstanding scoring 904 runs at 129 and breaking the club record for the most First Grade centuries at the age of 24. Kelvin has been a fantastic contributor to our club. He was of our First-Grade team during the most successful season in the club’s history in 2016/17 when we won the triple premiership. He is sadly leaving us to play in Western Australia where he will hopefully return permanently to first class cricket. From everybody at our club we wish him every success and thank him for his great contributions to our club.

Our First-Grade team finished the year not making the finals which was disappointing, we were challenged by a number of injuries within the team and our overall performances as a team lacked consistency. Our lower grade teams also suffered the same fate and reflected a need to rebuild player depth in our club.

Three of our young players Erik Carrington, Lachlan Pointon and Nick Crouch have been selected in the SACA Under 19 train-on squad for season 2019/20 which is a great achievement for the player development program in our club.

We need to focus on continual improvement at both senior and junior levels to achieve the skill level and team and club culture required to be successful at all levels on a consistent basis. Those standards include coaching standards at all levels across our club, we need to develop more rigorous processes and ensure that we are getting the best coaches and resources throughout the club.

In terms of our development as a club the triple premierships in 2016/17 were built on the basis of an outstanding junior program and the development of a strong depth of player within our club, which is no longer the case despite the tireless efforts of the great people who have been working within our junior program. From being the dominant junior club, we are now needing to make significant changes to build greater capacity to enable us to rise back to that position of dominance. The junior group has conducted a review which identified key areas of improvement, which was then reported to the club board. This information is now being acted upon to ensure that the identified priorities are addressed in the restructure of our cricket program and junior operations for the 2019/20 season.

The club will be introducing an Under 15 Academy in 2019/20 for boys and girls participating in SACA junior programs at our club. Underpinning this will also be the Under 13 Young Eagles program for young people looking to be selected in SACA junior program squads in our club.

SACA are currently reviewing their cricket program and specifically discussions are relating to the Fourth-Grade program and underage pathways. Changes are predicted to be forthcoming over the next couple of seasons and we need to ensure we are ready to adapt to these changes to ensure the continuing success of our club.

Culture sets critical things in a sporting club, respect and acceptance of each other, commitment to improvement and high expectations with consistent success are all indicators of an outstanding cricket club. These were strongly evident both on the field, and off the field within our membership and at board level during our triple premiership season. The way people banded together during this period of threat for our club set a benchmark that needs to once again become the marker for this great club.

As club members we all need to work together with the aim of getting back to the top of the tree as the dominant club in the SACA competition. We look forward to setting the scene for the future with the development of an updated strategic plan for the future over the coming months, improved coaching standards and resourcing right across the club and a club culture committed to setting high standards in all areas. We look forward to being back in the First-Grade finals, success in our lower grades and achieving ultimate success once again.

For season 2019/20 we have recruited Kamau Leverock and Blake MacDonald to our club.

Blake is a 20-year-old NSW batsman coming to SA to establish himself, he made three hundreds at No 3 in with an average of 87 last season. Kamau Leverock is also coming back to our club for a full season, he has played 4 first class games and bowls at good pace and is a hard hitting lefthanded batsman who excited us all with his performances in the 20/20

Annual Report 15 July 2019 CRICKET DIRECTOR competition in season 18/19 when he was available. 2019/20 will be an exciting opportunity to get back to the top of grade cricket in this state and we will work together to achieve this aim.

Our senior coaching panel will continue with Mark Harrity as senior coach. He will work with a number of assistants including an exciting new addition this season when Manning McInerney previously from Prospect Cricket Club joins us, he is a young developing coach who has previously worked with SACA and will continue his work with them while beginning his new role at our club. We aim to appoint playing coaches with game day managers at both third grade and fourth grade levels. As SACA are in discussions at the current time about the makeup of the senior grades for season 2019/20 we will wait until they have finalised these discussions before we announce new appointments in these grades.

On behalf of the cricket program I would like to sincerely thank all of those people in our club who give up their time to support the cricket club at both junior and senior levels. Without your tireless efforts our club is much the lesser.

Brenton Woolford Cricket Director

Annual Report 16 July 2019 WOMENS’ REVIEW

Under the guidance of Sy Massey who took on the role of 2nd grade coach just prior to Christmas, the second grade were always competitive on the field, and an admirable example of the spirit of cricket.

Many of the girls have had stand out seasons, displaying a maturity and diligence far beyond their years. Jess Cufone, Emily Parsons and Tessa Davis having noteworthy individual seasons contributing to their team’s success with both bat and ball.

The first grade had a lot to live up to with the success of last season, but apart from the pressure to succeed again that comes with winning premierships we also were bearing the loss of two key players in Lauren Ebsary and Tayla Gordon. Lauren Ebsary retiring from grade cricket prior to leaving for Perth in her last Big Bash season left a massive whole in the squad in terms of batting and bowling depth, but also leadership, maturity and experience. Huge congratulations to ‘Beep’ on her highly successful career, we wish her all the best and hope a return from retirement isn’t completely of the cards in a few years.

Our T20 season was again our strength and saw us have a chance at defending our title, unfortunately not our best performance on the day, but promising consistent signs to have made an appearance in 3 of the last 5 T20 grand finals. Whilst our 50 over campaign was less than desirable only managing to earn the points in 3 of the 9 games played, it gives us plenty of key things to work on including building partnerships and executing bowling plans across preseason.

Individual performances included Ellie Falconer who stepped up with both bat and ball this season sliding up and down the batting order as well as taking vital wickets to get us back into games, whilst 16yo Emily Hinze has had a standout season with the ball.

With a squad of player keen to replicate the success of previous season, and two passionate coaches we look forward to the challenge of season 2019/20.

Jess Joseph – 1st Grade Captain

Annual Report 17 July 2019 JUNIOR CRICKET REVIEW

THE YEAR IN REFLECTION – ON THE FIELD The standout team of the season was the U16 Reds with a showcase of the talent for the club in years to come and many transferring to seniors next year. They only lost 1 game during the minor round to finish 2 games clear at the top of the ladder to earn the right for a home semi-final but unfortunately lost to Sturt whom they beat 3 weeks prior) and therefore did not get to play in the GF. Our U16 Whites also made the grand final of the T20 competition which was a fantastic effort given the number of changes the team had to make during the year. The U16 Whites went down to Northern Districts in the GF – a team they beat in the minor round.

Our other junior teams in premier league saw many individuals gain valuable experience throughout the season with many 11- and 12-year old’s playing under 14’s. We had 10 different under 14 white players and ladies play U16 whites throughout the year, along with 3 new players from Yorke Peninsula who played under 16 whites all year. Thanks to Ed Rowntree for being the taxi each week. This provided great experience for all those boys and ladies who acquitted themselves well, but it was also pleasing that all 10 players put the club first in helping when we were short of players in the U16 whites. The experience will also give those younger players a head start to next season knowing what is required at under 16 level.

Gaining experience was further highlighted with 12 x U16 players assisting the seniors by playing 3rd and 4th grade when the senior teams were short due to injuries, unavailability’s and State call ups. It was pleasing to see these U16 players, who each played between 1-5 games of seniors during the year, put the club before any individual awards they probably missed in the U16s. If for some unforeseen circumstance the same shortage occurs in Seniors next year, I recommend those players who are asked to help out say yes, gain the experience, and make the transition to seniors the following year so much easier.

OFF THE FIELD Our relationship continues to develop with our regional partners on the Yorke Peninsula, thanks in large way to Chris Chapman, Ed Rowntree and Lauren Kakoschke, these persons being our conduit between the YP and WTDCC. The Denis Brien Shield, which is a game between WTDCC U14 players v YP U14 players continues to be played every year at the very picturesque Arthurton ground in the YP.

It must also be noted that each week over the cricket season, our U16 and U14 team’s talent increased thanks to a consistent group of 4 players coming from the YP to play at their own cost. A big thank you to all the parents for being so committed in bringing their children to the games, which is not only a financial cost, but also a 4 hour round trip every Saturday, all with a common aim of providing a pathway for country cricket players to be integrated into the district programme and enhance their opportunity to make State Squads. We as a club look forward to you all playing again next year along with some additional YP players who have already made enquiries about playing in our underage teams next year.

A special mention to our volunteers, those who have accepted to be BBQ cooks, team managers, scorers (live and manual) and data entry personnel. Our 5 underage teams and the club would not function without the assistance of these people and we thank you very much for your valuable assistance.

We also had our first bingo night for ages, thanks to the brainchild of Marnie Brokenshire where we had in excess of 100 people attend. Such was the success of this event that next year we may schedule this event twice, once in the early part of the season then again later in the year. Once again, many thanks to Marnie, Catherine, and Lyndall as the main organisers and the rest of the committee for their help, for not only this event but others throughout the year. Our other major success, our major community event, which was also an inaugural one, was the Pink Stumps Day. This started as a comment at a junior committee meeting, then grew legs very quickly. Marnie once again got this off the ground and with some very long and tedious volunteer hours and along, primarily with Kent Sendy, got PSD to reach out to all grades of Seniors, Juniors and Women’s over a hectic 3-week period in early January. We raised in excess of $2k for the McGrath Foundation.

All members of WTDCC should feel proud as the Premier League cricket club initiating in SA to get behind the PSD.

Annual Report 18 July 2019 JUNIOR CRICKET REVIEW

WTDCC are way ahead of the game and the envy of every other Premier League club when it comes to live scoring on Mycricket. WTDCC are the first Premier League club in SA to live score on Mycricket in every game. A massive thank you to Rocka for the raising of funds through his books sales and other ventures that enables the Junior and Women’s teams to all live score during the year. Once the concept was approved by the board, Adam Rumbelow then deserves a big thank you for sourcing the best deals around, for not only buying the hardware, but also sourcing the best data plans, and providing clear instructions and setting up each individual Ipad to make it as simple as ABC on a Saturday, even for those IT challenged. The problem we have now is that all the old “book scorers” now want to score electronically only. Live scoring could not have occurred without all the team managers and scorers in all teams embracing this new technology which saves a lot of volunteer hours each Saturday night manually keying-in individual scores. This innovation from WTDCC has been so widely accepted and appreciated by the wider Premier League community and I am constantly asked by opposition teams how to purchase Ipads, charges, data etc.

A big thank you to the Junior Committee who deserve a huge vote of thanks. Their continued effort to foster the growth of cricket is outstanding. Week after week during the summer the committee performed their duties without bias and for the benefit of the WTDCC and whilst all in a voluntary capacity.

A special mention to Catherine Terry and Neil Tredwell for arranging the presentation night and big thanks also to Emily Smith in following up with all coaches and arranging for all the trophies to be made and delivered. Another big thank you also to Blair Wickham for arranging the visual presentation for the Junior Presentation evening along with Adam Rumbelow in helping with all the electronics.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank our sponsors for supporting the junior part of our great club during the past year.

• Upside Building • Bendigo Bank • Nova Vita Wines • Westfield Shopping Centre (West Lakes)

Your generosity is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with you again in the upcoming season

Finally, a thank you to Catherine Terry as our Junior Secretary, with whom all junior parents liaise with via email, perhaps more than their spouses, and to Marnie Brokenshire and Catherine Terry, who spend a lot of time to ensure we get our 5 junior teams on the park each week, at the right ground, at the right time, with the right number of players and the team managers and team lists ready to go!

ALL OF THESE OFF-FIELD ACTIONS CONTRIBUTED IN ASSISTING WTDCC IN WINNING THE PREMIER LEAGUE CLUB OF THE YEAR AS CHOSEN BY SACA.

Annual Report 19 July 2019 WESTFIELD ~ YOUNG EAGLES GRANT

In August of last year, the Club was fortunate to win a $10,000 grant from Westfield, West Lakes, specifically for the development of our Junior Boys and Girls. The grant has lessened the large financial burden which Premier Cricket Clubs normally carry enabling the Club to spread its financial resources more widely and introduce new initiatives for the Juniors previously not financially viable.

The money has been spent wisely in a number of ways. Training tops and caps for all the boys and girls in the Young Eagles Academies have been issued free and Coaching costs can now be paid from this grant which in turn removes the need to ask families for fees for their children to participate in the Academies. More quality cricket balls are now supplied to Junior squads meaning they no longer have to wait until these are splitting before being replaced.

The Club has become the first in South Australia enable all of its Junior teams (Boys and Girls) to use ipads for scoring which in turn enables the progress scores to be immediately transmitted to the MyCricket and Club websites so that supporters and families not at the venue can check progress at any time during the match.

Jess Joseph and I were fortunate to be able to be reimbursed for our travel to Maitland to recruit local Yorke Peninsula girls to the Club. As a consequence, a number of young girls are now able to participate in our Junior program in . Near the end of the season it is intended to offer to pay for advanced Coaching courses for suitable applicants. Further, we were able to take our U14 Boys to play against the Yorke Peninsula U14 Country Cup team at Arthurton Oval.

In return for this generous act by Westfield West Lakes WTDCC encourages all Club supporters to visit Westfield West Lakes when an opportunity arises. It’s a one-stop hub for shopping, fun and relaxation. You can shop the range of fashion, entertainment, food, sports goods, home accessories and wellbeing or just check out great events. To all of our Country families a venture to West Lakes Shopping Centre when visiting Adelaide is worthwhile.

Annual Report 20 July 2019 WESTFIELD ~ YOUNG EAGLES ACADEMIES ~ BOYS

This squad continued successfully for its thirteenth season and comprised 20 boys from middle to upper Primary school level who also represented Grange, Fulham and Flinders Park Cricket Clubs besides our own Club in the WSJCA competition on Sundays. The program was conducted by former Test all-rounder Eric Freeman, former State cricketer and Australian baseballer David Mundy and me. I would like to sincerely thank the Australian Cricketers Association, through their local representative Wayne Phillips, for contributing to the coaching honorariums of Eric and David.

Players were selected through trials at the end of the 2016-17 season and about half played with the above Community Clubs and the rest with our own WSJCA Under 14s and Under 12s. Unfortunately, the SACA has decreed that West Torrens must phase out its Community Club teams by 2020. There seems to be no logic in this decision as West Torrens is filling a void as most of our WSJCA players are domiciled in areas where there are no Community Clubs. For the past two years there are promises that this void will be filled but so far no action by the SACA has been seen. : The aims of the Young Eagles Academies programs are • To provide extra coaching for players who will probably play SACA cricket for West Torrens and to assist in the development of players for future RSS, Under 14 and Women’s teams. • To help the players learn more about the game from experienced current and former players • To provide recreation and fun for 10, 11 and 12 year olds. • To further increase the profile of the WTDCC in the area by assisting young players from Community clubs

As in previous seasons Eric, David and I concentrated on the basic skills of correct technique for shot making and bowling action while David honed the fielding skills although each of us participated in all the various segments of the coaching. All senior T20 references (TV shots) were vetoed. Former Test spinner Dan Cullen made a number of guest appearances and his assistance was very much appreciated and received enthusiastically by the players.

The squad had 10 training sessions and an excellent match against a similar squad from Kensington at Henley Oval. The team owes a huge debt of gratitude to the many parents who umpired, scored both in the book and on the scoreboard, prepared the Afternoon Tea, set up the ground and spectator facilities prior to game commencing and finally packing up the movables after the match. We are also indebted to one of the parents, ‘Chook’ Barrett, who attended each training session and acted as timekeeper.

Feedback from a questionnaire to participants and their families indicate that the players not only enjoyed the program, felt that their skills improved greatly and that 10 training sessions was just the right number in which to participate given other Club and school commitments.

The value of the two Academies (formerly known as Development Squads) to the Club is shown by the fact that three former Young Eagles have been awarded SACA player contracts: Brooke Harris (Scorpions) and Spencer Johnson and Daniel Drew (Redbacks). Daniel has won the Bradman Medal for the best player in Men’s 1st Grade and Brooke won the Rolton Medal for the best player in Women’s 1st Grade. Spencer has won the Rob Zadow Medal (Best player in the 50 over Grand Final). 6 Males and 4 Females have played in 1st Grade Premierships including Jess Joseph who has captained two of these. Brooke, Jess, Daniel and Ben Williams have all been selected in SACA 1st Grade Teams of the Year. In total 10 boys and 10 girls have been selected to play 1st Grade.

Denis Brien Young Eagles Co-ordinating Coach (Boys Academy)

Annual Report 21 July 2019 WESTFIELD ~ YOUNG EAGLES ACADEMIES ~ GIRLS

The Girls Young Eagles Academy continued for its fourth season and saw some new recruits although not as many faces as we had hoped. It was pleasing to see that many of the girls who had progressed through the academy over the last few seasons have continued to fill the majority of the Second-Grade women’s team this summer.

The Young Eagles trained for approximately 10 sessions throughout the season on Wednesday nights before the senior women’s training. This inspired the girls as they were able to see that a large number of women, making up both the first and second grade teams, had progressed through Young Eagles academies themselves. Furthermore, many of the Young Eagles girls attended the senior training and were provided with the opportunity to play in the Second-Grade team later in the season. Two girls from Lower Yorke Peninsula made the long trip on a couple of occasions and advanced to the 2nd Grade.

Throughout the trainings, there was a focus on developing the girl’s overall skill set. There were opportunities to try wicket keeping and spin bowling and as well as develop a ‘change up’ ball. There was also an emphasis on improving their games sense and decision-making abilities to increase the girl’s confidence. It was pleasing to see a number of girls undertake opportunities to participate in additional trainings or games, including trialling for the State SAPSASA team. This highlights the interest and commitment of our West Torrens girls as well as indicates the growing opportunities there are for girls in cricket. Already some of our Academy girls have advanced to state squads and one of the initial participants, Paris Hall, was appointed captain of the S.A. Under 15 team this season.

Next season, we look forward too many of the girls returning as well as expanding the academy numbers to help provide young girls with the opportunity to play cricket. We also hope to put the girls’ skills into practice with the possibility of a friendly games against other Club’s young cricketers, as conducted last season.

Jess Joseph and Caitlin Edmunds thoroughly enjoyed coaching the girls and seeing their skills and confidence develop throughout the season. We encourage these girls and any other girls wanting to give cricket a go to stay tuned for details on next season’s academy.

The Club put $500 towards setting up a Girls’ Academy in our Yorke Peninsula zone and as a consequence Ben Brown SACA Country Development Officer) has laid the foundations for this Academy. Two sessions were held at Maitland Oval, a pre and a post-Christmas session for the 8 girls in the YP Zone Squad with Ben and YP stalwart Stephen Brown as Coaches.

Plans for the future: An effort will be made to increase the numbers as the ‘YP Schools League’ grows. The aim is to build the Academy to close to 20 girls for next season and then commence matches.

The idea for a country Academy began when Jess and Denis visited Central Yorke School (Maitland) as West Torrens reps for the inaugural Yorke Peninsula Zone’s Girls Strikers League competition which was very well organised by Taryn Williams (SACA Girls Pathway Officer) and the Schools SA Zone representative, Craig Fitzgerald. A further “Come and Try” day was held at Maitland Oval on November 28. As a result of these days 2 players came to Adelaide and participated in the 2nd Grade in the latter part of the program and another 4 players and their families have shown an interest in playing for West Torrens next season.

Next season we intend trying to get involved with more nearby schools and also recruit from winter sports Clubs. However, this will also need greater input from the SACA Development officers.

WOOLIES’ BLAST REPORT

This season saw a change of Sponsor and consequently change of name from Milo In2Cricket to Woolworth’s Blast.

We had 25 children registered for the Blast this season with participation numbers each week steady at around 20. All equipment was newly branded for the change of Sponsor.

Unfortunately, our numbers were lower than anticipated as the SACA staff had not visited four of our feeder schools with advertising prior to commencement of the program. Also, some equipment for the participants did not arrive until mid-way through the program. The program was broken into two parts – Term 4 and Term 1 of the school year with a break during the Christmas vacation.

Our Coaches, Liam Dorward (Head Coach), Alex Hutton and Josh Joseph have done an amazing job with all the drills and activities. They were very engaging, and the children loved having fun with children of their own age and enjoyed the activities and skills which they learnt. It was great to see the happy participants go about their tasks and to see the parents enjoying themselves with some joining in.

I would like to thank Donna Mowling, our exuberant Co-ordinator, for all her hard work in building on the sound foundations put down by her predecessor, Colin Cocks two seasons ago. Donna is enthusiastic, highly efficient and works among the children assisting the coaches and giving heaps of encouragement to the little ones who are sometimes a bit shy in their participation.

Donna is a gem.

I personally take pleasure in watching the happy throng not only as an official of the Club but also as a grandparent.

Annual Report 27 July 2019 STAN THE STATISTICIAN

Since the last Eagle Eye, the Club Historian has been able to update the Club Records which are now on the web site. In some cases, we were 3 years behind due to the time taken up by the lengthy battle to remain as an independent Club. Some new records which have come to light in the past season are listed below. Quite a season for new 1st Grade partnership records (Men and Women).

Pat Fisher reached the 50 games played mark in Men’s 1st Grade (excluding T20s).

Kelvin Smith scored his 13th 1st Grade becoming the first West Torrens player to do so. He also scored his 4th 1st Grade One Day century and is the only male player to score multiple One Day hundreds.

Kelvin Smith (86) and Daniel Drew (95) established a new One Day comp 3rd wicket partnership record of 172 v. Tea Tree Gully at Henley Oval, October 2018.

Daniel Drew (64 n.o.) and Nick Crouch (24 n.o.) created a new 4th wicket stand for the T20 competition with an unfinished 71 v. Woodville at Henley Oval, December 2018.

Angela Treloar (55 n.o.) and Ellie Falconer (80) set a new opening stand record for Women’s 1st Grade with 143 v. Port Adelaide at Port Adelaide Reserve, January 2019. This also became the record for a T20 match.

Lauren Ebsary (152 n.o) and Laura Niejalke (17) put on 100 to establish a new 7th wicket partnership for Women’s 1st Grade v. Southern Districts at Henley, Oval, October 2018

Laura Niejalke (16) and Jess Joseph (24) created a new 8th wicket record of 64 for Women’s 1st Grade v. Northern Districts at The Paddocks #1, October 2018. (wides helped!)

Ellie Falconer (70 n.o.) and Brooke Harris (71 n.o.) put on 145 (unfinished) establishing a new 2nd wicket partnership record for Women’s T20 1st Grade v. Northern Districts at Henley Oval, January 2019.

Tamsin Jones (60) and Emily Parsons (28) created a new 5th wicket record of 100 for Women’s 2nd Grade v. Kensington at Ford Oval (Kensington Gardens), January 2019.

Jess Cufone (57 n.o.) and Matilda Maitland (17) stand of 70 was a new record for the Women’s 2nd Grade T20 4th wicket stand v. Kensington at Ford Oval, Kensington Gardens, October 2018

Paris Hall (59 n.o.) and Rebecca Hoodless (17 n.o.) put on an unbeaten 40 for a new Women’s 2nd Grade T20 record for the 5th wicket v. University at Park 10 #1 (formerly Teacher’s College Oval), October 2018.

Thomas Brown (78) and Jack Haddad (40) created a new 6th wicket partnership record for the U.14 Reds when they added 98 v. East Torrens at Victoria Park Sports Fields, East Terrace, East Adelaide Parklands, Feb. 2019

Annual Report 31 July 2019 ONGRATULATIONS

President, Scott Jones, immediate Past President and Chairman of the Women’s Sub- Committee, Denis Brien, and Chairman of the Junior Sub-Committee, Daryl Marshall.

WTDCC were presented with the SACA Premier Club of the Year Award at the SACA Community Cricket Awards.

Scott Jones comments: “This is a great achievement for our club as it shows how highly SACA rates our efforts to create a professional, inclusive and community focused club. While we all know there are still many areas we can improve the way we perform, both on and off the field, it is pertinent to take a moment to acknowledge the magnitude of this achievement and be proud of our efforts we have put in to get this award.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this award, it is truly a shared honour that we can all wear with pride and I thank all our volunteers and helpers around the club – you should feel a part of this, and again I thank all for their support in achieving the prestigious award.”

Annual Report 32 July 2019 CONGRATULATIONS

John Lynch with RFDS Jet “John Francis Lynch”

Former Life member and President, John Lynch, and just retired CEO of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Central Division, has been honoured for his work with the RFDS with the naming of the first jet aircraft of the RFDS being John Francis Lynch.

The aircraft is a Pilatus PC-24 Super Versatile Jet. The aircraft will substantially reduce travel times for the RFDS.

The craft has unpaved airfield capacity and short-field take-off and landing, it is more likely to be used in the longer distance flights such as Darwin Adelaide.

John and wife Anita are staunch supporters of WTDCC and the RFDS.

John was President of WTDCC from 1998 -99 until 2006 – 07.

Sons, Daniel (Life Member) and Jacob (Jake) both played with distinction for the Eagles.

Annual Report 59 July 2019 PLAYER PROFILE

This season Kelvin Smith became the most prolific century maker in the Club’ history when he scored his 13th 1st Grade century surpassing Ron Hamence, Alan Shepherd, Paul Nobes and Lauren Ebsary. It is therefore worthwhile looking at the career of one of the latter – Paul ’Nibbler’ Nobes.

As a 15-year-old Paul Nobes was living at the Rawnsley Park Caravan Park (managed by his parents) in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia and attending Hawker Area School. A short competition of four matches was arranged between a team from Hawker and another from the Parachilna/Blinman area. Paul scored an unbeaten century in each game and so impressed his school Principal, former East Torrens player Ian Muster, that Ian wrote to Barry Jarman, coach of the Kensington Club, recommending that Paul be given a trial.

He came to the city and played D and C grade and Shell Shield for the Browns. Early in the 1983-84 season he was elevated to B grade and scored a century in the opening match, the first ever match played on the new West Torrens home ground at Kings Reserve. He was then chosen in A grade and scored 161 and 46 on debut against Port Adelaide. He played in the Kensington Firsts for two seasons before crossing to Prospect for a season. Unhappy at Prospect, unfit and overweight, Paul was

Annual Report 60 July 2019 PLAYER PROFILE approached by David Hookes and coach Andrew Sincock after a match at Thebarton in which Prospect was routed but Paul had displayed his undoubted talent. Winter training with Andrew enabled him to shed 18 kg. and had him enthused and ready for a productive career with the Eagles.

Paul soon settled in at Thebarton and scored 488 runs during 1986-86, his first season. His second season was phenomenal as he hit five centuries including a magnificent 202 not out against Tea Tree Gully and his aggregate of 974 still remains as the all-time best season’s aggregate for West Torrens and culminated in the receipt of the Bradman Medal. With such an avalanche of runs he was an automatic selection for the first Sheffield Shield match of the 1988-89 season.

He continued to make runs in both the domestic and first-class arenas and had another magnificent season in 1990-91 for club and state. That season he scored 937 runs at an average of 52.05 for South Australia to win the Batting trophy and 732 runs at a record average of 122 for West Torrens which included a double century and two other centuries, all unbeaten. In the Semi-final, which was played against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, the Magpies scored a massive 397 on the Saturday of the match. Paul took two of the younger players to the nets to bowl to him immediately after six hours in the field, stating that the opposition score, whilst formidable, was within reach as he would get 200 of the runs if others in the team scored the remainder. He wasn’t quite true to his prediction as he was on 189 when he scored the winning .

For the 1991-92 season Paul was also lost to Victoria, through no fault of the Club. At the commencement of the season he was in the state squad and played the first two F.A.I. Cup games (limited over interstate matches) but was not selected for the first Sheffield Shield game, despite being the state’s leading batsman the previous year. He had been disappointed that certain promises from the then state coach Peter Philpott had not materialised and was looking to stabilise his future. He played in the second club game against Salisbury scoring 69 and 48. Before the next game which was against Glenelg at Brighton Road he discussed with Denis Brien the chairman of selectors, the fact that he might be transferring to Melbourne after the forthcoming match and that he was prepared to step aside to let another player play A grade. When he assured Denis that he would be available for the whole of the game, Denis felt that he should be selected. On the first Saturday of the match he scored 77 in the total of 9/303. On the Sunday he travelled to Melbourne for talks with the Waverley- Dandenong Cricket Club and secured a guarantee for his future, consequently playing for that club on the Tuesday - the Melbourne Cup holiday. As the Victorian Cricket Association didn’t concern itself with the need for clearances from interstate clubs, no clearance had been sought from nor granted by West Torrens, although Paul had the Club’s support in what he was doing.

Paul didn’t return to play on the second Saturday as the S.A.C.A. had ruled that he could not take any further part in the match as he had played in another competition in the meantime and was no longer a registered player. This seemed illogical and quite an anomaly as Paul was a West Torrens player at the start of the game which hadn’t finished, and he hadn’t been cleared by West Torrens to any other club. One can hardly imagine the A.F.L. sending a message to the Adelaide Crows or Port Power hierarchy at half-time indicating not only that one of their key players was now unregistered but that the team would have to play with seventeen for the second half.

There were further implications for Paul when he settled in Melbourne as the Australian Cricket Board refused to allow him to play for Victoria as he had already played for South Australia in the current season. This matter then went to Court to get an injunction for Paul to play. The Court ruled in his favour as the A.C.B. rule read that a player could not play Sheffield Shield cricket for two states in the same season and Paul had not played Sheffield Shield but F.A.I. Cup for South Australia. He was then selected for the fourth Sheffield Shield match of the season for Victoria.

Paul had come to West Torrens with a reputation for being somewhat unsettled at his previous two clubs, but at Thebarton he proved to be the ideal clubman, someone who wanted to be at West Torrens. He was an outstanding on field performer who led from the front - if there was any challenge to be undertaken Paul Nobes took it. He equalled Allan Shepherd’s record of twelve centuries for the Club and is the only player to score two double centuries. Quite deservedly Paul Nobes was selected in the West Torrens Team of the Century. He was later selected in the Adelaide DCC Team of the Century, a Club which appointed him playing coach for the first four years after he returned to South Australia.
