PRESIDENT'S REPORT (Tony Trist)

SACUSA Members,

Firstly, I would like to present to our members my final annual report as President of SACUSA. I would like to thank all our members for their support during my two-year reign. I have enjoyed the experience and challenges over the past two years.

This season has seen umpire training and development take a new “direction” with a new structure of umpire management “model” introduced by SACA. SACUSA and its members were fully supportive of this new “direction” with SACA becoming the first state to employ a full-time Umpire Coach, Nathan Magill.

Additional initiatives that have also resulted from these changes, have been the introduction of a new online system for monitoring umpire performance, which along with additional coaching resources have seen umpire review and assessments reaching levels beyond expectations and the envy of other states. SACUSA hope with this new direction we will see improved quality in umpiring standards and more SA representation at higher levels and on panels.

Our Panel 1 & 2 umpires had mid-season performance reviews conducted for the first time in early January to support individual umpire development. A much higher training and development commitment for panel 1 & 2 umpires who have undertaken 17 training sessions this season, significantly more than previous seasons. Another feature has been additional training at Premier Clubs, a practice that we hope to extend more broadly across Premier Clubs next season.

This season has also seen SACUSA’s scorer membership increase, as well as carrying out training and development for our scorers.

We also launched our new logo. The new logo was designed with the assistance of SACA to bring a more modern appearance. The logo is sporting the ‘shield’ shape, similar to Cricket Australia and SACA. The new format is well-timed to reflect branding that aligns with the early 21st .

This season saw the 60th Bradman Medal, which originated as an umpire-initiated award in 1957/58. In 1957/58, 30 umpires attended the first presentation night held at a hotel on Angas Street. In that year there were joint winners, just like this year. Neither of the winners was in attendance 1957/58, so, taxis were sent to their homes to bring them to the dinner to receive their award.

SACUSA were delighted this season to have had the opportunity to extend our sponsorship of the major medals to include the Karen Rolton Medal and the Lyn Fullston Medal. We see this as a further strengthening of our support of Premier Cricket in South Australia. Significantly, this change will now see all Premier Cricket medals being aligned and manufactured to the same specifications also the men’s and women’s competitions being recognised equally. SACUSA has also become more closely involved with the preparation of the Bradman Medal event in the last year, which we look forward to continuing. Next season SACUSA have offered to add another medal to their sponsorship. Congratulations to Craig Thomas who was voted as the 2017/18 SACA Grade Cricket Umpire of the Year on the night.

I also offer my congratulations to Eloise Sheridan, John Nemcic, Colin Shearing, Tim Hart and Giorgio Profiris for making their Premier 1st Grade debuts during 2017/2018 – very well done to all these umpires. Eloise made history by being the first female in South Australia to be appointed as an official in a male final (Men’s T20 Grand Final) as well as becoming the first female to officiate in a men’s first grade match.

South Australian umpires were very well represented in Cricket Australia competitions; Cricket Australia Female U19 National Championships in Canberra – Eloise Sheridan and Mary Waldron; Cricket Australia National Country Championships in Geraldton - Giorgio Profiris; Cricket Australia Under 15 Female National Championships in Adelaide - Eloise Sheridan, Mary Waldron and Darran Swain; Imparja Cup in Alice Springs - Dhaval Bhatt.

I would like to also take this opportunity to congratulate all umpires and scorers who had Grand Final appointments. For those umpires and scorers who officiated in their first Grand Final, I hope you enjoyed the experience.

Easter saw the President v Vice-President’s biennial cricket match played at the MCG (Mylor Cricket Ground). Congratulations to Ted and his team for winning the match. Easter 2019 sees SACUSA take on VCAUSA for the biennial Crockett Shield match. The match will be played at Wesley College, which is a wonderful playing venue. For those members who have not attended one of these, I strongly recommend it to anyone who is curious about this long-standing tradition.

SACUSA’s annual presentation night was once again held at the Adelaide Pavilion. The food and service was excellent. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Darran Swain and his sub-committee for organising a great night, which went off very well. This year saw the return of the witty, Ben Hook as our MC for the evening. One of the highlights of the night was to induct Rita Artis and into SACUSA’s Hall of Fame and a formal presentation will be conducted in the new season. Rita attended the night and was interviewed by Ben Hook, while Steve was unable to attend, as he was overseas. I would also like to congratulate Bob Woods who was selected as the ‘John Wilson Memorial Award’ winner. Bob has made significant contributions to Cricket Australia as match referee and to SACA and SACUSA in numerous representative positions. Bob has had a very long and valued involvement with SACUA/SACUSA as a committee person, Honorary Auditor and President, as well as being an active and supportive member and Life Member, spanning 45 years. We also made a ‘special’ presentation to Neil Dansie as this year marks Neil’s 90th birthday. I would like to congratulate all the other winners on the night.

Thanks to Darran Swain and Shane Roberts who assisted in cooking the meats and preparing the salads for our monthly meetings each month. I would also like to offer SACUSA’s thanks to Woodville Cricket Club for providing us with a “home” for the season.

Next season, we will have a new “home” being at the new sporting pavilion at Narnungga (Park 25), Karen Rolton Oval, for all our meetings for season 2018/19. Our first meeting is SACUSA’s AGM on August 8th. The Executive was given a brief tour of the facility and I am looking forward to being able to use the new pavilion on an ongoing basis.

I would like to thank our Patron, Neil Dansie for his continued support of all things SACUSA. Neil always has a great smile and always has a kind word to say about SACUSA.

To my fellow members of the Executive Committee, Lynton, Michial, Ted, Darran, Shane, Neil, Craig, Michael and Bruce, thank you for your outstanding efforts and support. I would also like to thank Sarah Fry, Nathan Magill and Catherine Brown for their help and support throughout the season. Finally, I would like to thank all our members for their continued support of SACUSA and keep up the good work.

Best wishes to all members for the coming 2018/2019 season.

Tony Trist President

SECRETARY'S REPORT (Michial Farrow)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA,

I would like to present to you my report for the 2017/2018 season just gone at this Annual General Meeting of the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association.

We have had a very busy year on the social side of things. The season was launched at the Adelaide Convention Centre. During the season, we held the Christmas Meeting, Night at the Dogs, cricket matches against ATCUSA and Adelaide Cricket Club, Bowling Night, Bradman Medal, President v Vice- President cricket match / Family Fun Day over Easter and concluded with our Presentation Dinner. More information on these events can be found in the Social Convenor’s Report.

I would like to thank the Woodville Cricket Club for its generosity in allowing us to use their facilities for our monthly meetings, and our Social Committee for our pre-meeting meals throughout the season. This has enabled our members to have an enjoyable experience at our meetings.

The season once again climaxed with the Bradman Medal Dinner Presentation. I would like to congratulate all the medal winners, including Kelvin Smith of the West Torrens Cricket Club and Conor McInerney of Woodville Cricket Club, on winning the Bradman Medal and Brooke Harris of West Torrens Cricket Club on winning the Karen Rolton Medal. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the 2018 SACA Premier Cricket Umpire of the Year, Craig Thomas, on a fine season.

Our season concluded with the Presentation Dinner, held at The Adelaide Pavilion on South Terrace. I would like to congratulate all the worthy winners on the night, including Bob Woods on winning the John Wilson Award and Marg Weddell on winning the Joyce McMenamin Trophy. These two winners were chosen by the Executive Committee from a fine selection of nominees for their contribution to our association and cricket in South Australia.

Congratulations to all our members on the high standard of umpiring displayed throughout the year and to all those who umpired finals. The great contributions of our members, however, have not been restricted to Premier Grade Cricket alone. Simon Fry has continued to fly the flag at both a State and International level and on winning the SA Sports Official of the Year for the second time. It would be remiss of me not to mention the achievements of Eloise Sheridan who this season became the first woman to umpire in a Men’s 1st Grade game in South Australia and then completed the season by becoming the first woman in Australia to umpire a Men’s 1st Grade Premier Cricket final, well done Eloise.

I would like to thank our wonderful sponsors, who have been so generous throughout the year – SACA, Coverdrive Couriers, St Johns Road Wines, Parkinson Corporate, Maid of Auckland Hotel and 1834 Hotels - and I ask that we support these companies that support us.

To my fellow members of the Executive Committee, Sarah Fry, Nathan Magill and Catherine Brown, at SACA, thank you all for your help and support throughout the season. Finally, to the members of SACUSA, I thank you for your support, and I look forward to your continued support in the up-coming season and beyond.

Michial Farrow Secretary

TREASURER'S REPORT (Lynton Donisthorpe)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA,

It is with great pleasure that I present to you the Treasurer's Report of our Association’s business for the 2017-2018 financial year.

Balance Sheet Summary This year has seen us deliver a relatively significant surplus. Our forecast at the last AGM, of a modest surplus was exceeded due to higher than expected membership income and under expenditure on some events. Receipts for the year of $57,030.70 and payments of $52,730.34, delivered an end of financial year balance in our working account of $22,794.91 and a surplus of $4,300.36 for the year.

Membership Membership numbers increased quite significantly in 2017/18 to 132 Full Members (up from 108 in 2016/17) and Associate Membership was stable at 11 (the same as 2016/17), Life Members are not included in these figures. 5 of these members are active umpires or scorers, but not with SACA, and 11 are non-active. The club scorer initiative, in its 2nd season this year, was taken up by 2 more clubs which generated an additional 8 full members (added to the 4 from last year & 2 from another Premier Club) bringing the number of full scorer members this year to 14.

Sponsorship Sponsorship income was similar to 2016/17 with SACA continuing as a major sponsor and St John's Road maintaining their product sponsorship for which we are very grateful. Every year I express our sincere thanks to our loyal sponsors and friends from Coverdrive Couriers, this year is no different. They have been fantastic financial support for SACUSA for a very long time and, I can only thank them again for their significant contribution again this year.

Budget Comparison Our surplus of $4,300.36, as mentioned above, was significantly above our budgeted/predicted surplus of $1,395.00. The two most significant contributing factors were an increased membership income ($1,900 above budget, after SACA registration payments) due to increased member numbers, and a lower than expected costs on the Bradman Medal evening ($1,830 below budget) due primarily to lower costs for SACUSA guests and lower Medal production costs. Other less significant items were an increase in consumable property costs ($464.95 above budget), lower than anticipated expenditure on history items ($600 below budget) due to some expected items not being purchased this year. Most other items came in on, or around, our budget estimates when allowing for the expected fluctuations.

Trust Accounts The Gladstone Jones and George McDonagh trust funds (held in Westpac Community Solutions Cash Reserve Account) realised interest as the only income again this year. We had no withdrawal this year for Easter Trophies (the reason the money was bequeathed to SACUSA). Interest income for the year in the account was $3.67, leaving a final account balance of $1,336.92, split between the two funds as follows: Jones $640.15 and McDonagh $696.77.

Overview of Current Financial Position SACUSA has significantly strengthened its strong financial position this year, which has followed recent upward trends. This leaves us well placed to provide the Association with financial stability and also the flexibility to support members and Association goals and initiatives. The accepted financial guide for sporting clubs and Associations security is to hold reserve funds that will allow them to operate for 2 years without any income. While ‘no income’ is difficult to assess for us, I feel SACUSA is currently in this position.

Lynton Donisthorpe Treasurer

Glad Jones and George McDonagh Memorial Trust Funds

Glad Jones George McDonagh

As a part of the biennial cricket match against the Victorian Cricket Association Umpires and Scorers Association, trophies are awarded to the best performed South Australian players for overall performance and fielding. These awards are made possible by trust funds held by the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association from monies donated by former members, Gladstone Jones and George McDonagh.

The first fund, the Glad Jones Memorial Trust Fund, was established in March 1976 with a donation of $150.00 from Mr. Gladstone Jones for a trophy to be awarded to the best performed player representing South Australia. Two years later Mr. George McDonagh made a similar donation, establishing the George McDonagh Memorial Trust Fund to enable an award to be made to the best performed fielder during these matches.

The donations remain invested at the discretion of the SACUSA Committee, however, if a decision was taken to discontinue the matches in the future, the funds and any interest earned was to be donated to the National Heart Foundation. After the establishment of both funds the Executive Committee of the South Australian Cricket Umpires Association was empowered to use the interest earned from both funds to award the trophies after each match. An increase to the capital invested of $200.00 was made to each fund during the late 1980’s from interest already earned to ensure that a sound basis for interest earning existed and therefore the continuation of the awards.

SOCIAL CONVENOR'S REPORT (Darran Swain)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA,

The 2017/2018 season started in July with the Umpiring Launch in Adelaide where refreshments and finger food was served. This was an excellent day to catch up before the cricket season started. Well done and thanks to Sarah Fry and Nathan Magill.

A social evening was held in August at the Angle Park Greyhounds where a few of our members attended, had dinner and then proceeded to either win or lose money. A huge thank you to Terry Murch for organising this great night.

Umpires’ preseason training took place with Law Study nights, training then continue throughout the season for Panel One, Panel Two and the Development Squad. These training nights involved theory and practical sessions as well we had the pleasure of Cricket Australia’s Umpire Match Referee & Umpire Selection Manager attending one of our training sessions. Simon spoke about player behaviour, this involved role playing which was very beneficial. Thanks to Sarah and Nathan for organising this. Training nights were very well received and umpires that attended them have commented how good they are and made positive comments. These nights are not only informative but also a lot of fun as we mix with other umpires and assist and support one another throughout the season.

Our monthly meetings this year were held at the Woodville Cricket Club clubrooms, where we enjoyed a BBQ with salad before the meeting. At one meeting the social committee decided to change the menu and have hamburgers, this was very well received and we will be looking at changing the menu occasionally for variation. I would like to thank the SACUSA committee members that provided salads and thank you to Kristen Thomas for her wonderful and very tasty cheese and cracker platter which was always greatly appreciated. Thank you also to Neil Ricketts, Shane Roberts and Terry Murch who assisted in cooking and cleaning the BBQ. An important part of our monthly meetings is the raffle, these raffles help offset the cost of the meals, and the continued support of members is greatly appreciated. Thank you to the people who donated prizes for every meeting.

We had a Golf Day at the Stirling Golf Club, followed by lunch at the Crafers Hotel. Although the number of participants were low it was an excellent day. We are looking at another golf day, maybe at a different course.

This year we organised four get togethers after the 1st day game, these were well attended. It was great to be able to catch up with experienced umpires as well as new umpires for a meal and a drink and talk about their game and any issues anyone had. The first of these get togethers coincided with the visit of our VCAUSA exchange umpire – Mattis van Eck. Thank you to those that attended and we hope to see a more attend these nights.

In January, we teamed up with the Development Squad for a night of lawn bowls, who would of thought that lawn bowls was hard. This was a fantastic night where we all had a laugh, learnt lots and had an enjoyable evening. A huge thank you must go to Kim Perrin for organising this night as well as the BBQ.

We then focused on another sport, ten pin bowling. We ventured to Norwood Bowl in March, this was another fantastic night leading up to the grand finals, where all participants had a great night and loads of fun. I must say this was easier than lawn bowls.

This year the annual Stanton Cup was hosted by ATCUSA at Woodville South Cricket Club. Unfortunately, we struggled to fill a full side and were soundly beaten. We also held a BBQ and social Page 12

match against Adelaide CC at Glandore Oval with a similar result. Both matches were fun events for those involved and we would love to see greater participation in these events from our members particularly with next season being the Crockett Shield year in Melbourne.

The 60th Bradman Medal Dinner was held on 21st March at and again was a highlight of the season, attended by 37 umpires and partners. It was great to catch up with players and coaches throughout the night and have a chat about the season. This event recognises achievements for both men and women playing Premier Cricket at all levels. I would encourage all umpires and coaches to attend this fantastic night, which was initiated by our Association back in 1958. This night is held on the Wednesday night before the Grand Finals, I strongly suggest you mark it in your calendars.

During the Easter weekend, umpires, scorers and partners travelled to the wonderful Mylor Oval for the President versus Vice President Cricket match. The day had everything, beautiful weather, fantastic BBQ lunch, brilliant wine and a great cricket match to watch. Our scorer, Neil Ricketts was one of our umpires, although, there were a few dubious decisions, it was great to watch. Neil has advised he will not be giving up his role as scorer. Just for the record the Vice President’s team won the day, although, our President, Tony Trist, may be blaming his ‘swollen’ knee for why his team didn’t win. Thank you to Craig & Kristen Thomas, Tony & Liz Trist, Bruce Stribley, Shane Roberts, Caron Donisthorpe and Angela Swain for assisting and organising the day. Overall a fantastic day and I would encourage everyone to get to the match in 2020.

Our final event of the season was our presentation dinner held on May 19th at the Adelaide Pavilion on South Terrace, attended by 77 members, partners and guests. Our guests included our patron Neil Dansie, SACA State Umpiring Leader Sarah Fry & SACA State Umpire Coach Nathan Magill. This event is subsidised for members and partners and is a highlight of our social calendar, where SACUSA recognises the efforts of umpires and scorers throughout the season. It was a great pleasure to have the services of Ben Hook as our MC, he kept the night rolling, told a few jokes, interviewed our Hall of Fame nominee Rita Artis, as well organised a video message from Channel 10’s Rebecca Morse. Thank you, Ben. Our raffle and auction prizes were a big hit, this year we had 3 auction prizes and 18 raffle prizes. Thanks also to our Presentation Dinner sponsors – Hotel Grand Chancellor on Hindley Street, Adelaide Meridien Hotel, Telstra, Maid of Auckland Hotel, Bunnings Warehouse, The Good Guys, SACA, Adelaide Zoo, Officeworks & Barbeques Galore. I must say a big thank you to Craig & Kristen Thomas, Angela Swain, & Shane Roberts for their assistance, organisation and support to produce another magnificent presentation night.

Finally, I thank those who have assisted the social committee throughout the season in any way with raffles, cooking and cleaning the BBQ, preparing salads, and assisting at our social functions. Your support, enthusiasm and commitment is really appreciated. I would like to take this opportunity in acknowledging and thanking my social committee – Craig & Kristen Thomas, Shane Roberts and Angela Swain – whose support and enthusiasm has made it possible to plan and our social activities for SACUSA.

I look forward to seeing you all at our 2018/2019 social events and wish you all the best for the 2018/2019 season.

SCORERS SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT (Neil Ricketts)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA,

Season 2017/18 saw the Scorers Subcommittee meet several times pre- season and early season to discuss a number of issues.

Initiatives introduced last season included:  Improved appointment process for representative games  Continuation of SACUSA Membership offer to SACA clubs 2 years for price of 1  Trialing of 2 Way Radio’s for 1st Grade Games between Umpires & Scorers  Recommended Payment Schedule for SACA Premier Grade Scorers  Issuing SACUSA embroidered pencil cases to all Scorer Members

I’m pleased to report that Scorer member numbers increased to 14 during the season with the Adelaide, Prospect, University and West Torrens clubs taking advantage of the membership offer. It is hoped that other clubs see the benefits of membership and encourage/subsidise their own scorers to join as well.

The Subcommittee is due to reconvene soon after the AGM in preparation of season 2018/19 with the following initiatives being worked on:  Printing of Scorers Instruction Booklet (inc paper based and electronic scoring information)  Scorer Training Courses for Season 2018/19  Possible Scorers Exchange with VCAUSA (1st Class Level)  Exchange of Ideas with Scorer representative of VCAUSA  Recommendation to change Playing Conditions of SACA Premier Cricket bylaws to request Captains toss 30 minutes prior to commencement of play, rather than 15 minutes prior, to allow scorers time for pre-game preparation and set up.

Many thanks to Subcommittee members, Lynton Donisthorpe, Ed Branson, Mick Harper and Ian Graham for their work throughout the year.

In closing, I would like to congratulate all SACUSA members who were presented awards at the Presentation Night in May and especially Peter Hutton from the West Torrens District Cricket Club who was announced as the recipient of the Bucket / Hammond Scorer of the Year.

SACA STATE UMPIRING LEADER’S REPORT (Sarah Fry)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA,

The 2017-18 season began with the annual umpiring launch which was held at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Guests reflected on the achievements from the previous season and were also provided with a snapshot of the season ahead.

It was another very busy season with new initiatives introduced, milestones reached, appointment numbers increased and umpires attended more training sessions than ever before, all of which contributed to developing our umpiring group.

Our scorers had an eventful season with their involvement in many competitions including the Test Match, Sheffield Shield, BBL, WBBL, Futures League and Redbacks League.

Before the season commenced Nathan Magill was appointed as SACA’s State Umpire Coach. His tireless effort and hard work has made a significant impact on what we have been able to provide all umpires. Catherine Brown also continued to support our umpires and scorers. Her assistance has been greatly appreciated.

With a new code to the Laws of Cricket being enforced, training sessions included a Laws Study Workshop, Laws Study nights, the annual Umpiring Seminar, Development Panel training as well as SACA Panel 1 and 2 training. New umpires joined our ranks while others took up the opportunity to update or take the next step with their accreditation. On separate occasions umpires were also fortunate enough to hear from Cricket Australia representatives and the standing umpires in the Adelaide Test match at the Behind the Bails evening.

The introduction of the Match Officials System allowed our Umpire Coaches to again provide an increased number of assessments on umpires from all Associations and umpires had the opportunity to set goals and complete their own self assessments. I wish to thank our Umpire Coaches for all of their work. Their contribution to umpire development has positively benefited the umpiring group.

We also had success with umpire appointments at National Championships. Congratulations to the following umpires on their appointments:

Harry Singh – School Sport Australia 15 and Under Male Championships Eloise Sheridan, Mary Waldron and Darran Swain – National Under 15 Female Championships Luke Uthenwoldt – National Under 17 Male National Championships Eloise Sheridan and Mary Waldron- National Under 18 Female Championships Giorgio Profiris – National Country Championships Dhaval Bhatt – National Indigenous Championships

Eloise Sheridan made history twice during the season, becoming the first woman to officiate in a Men’s 1st Grade match and the first woman in Australia to umpire a Men’s 1st Grade Premier Cricket final. To coincide with these appointments SACA introduced a scholarship to encourage more females to become umpires. This was opened to females involved in cricket who are interested in becoming an umpire and who are a current player, coach, administrator or volunteer.

Our state panel, Craig Thomas and Luke Uthenwoldt officiated in WNCL, WBBL and Futures League competitions and undertook fourth umpire duties at some BBL matches.

Simon Fry had another successful season now with seven Tests, 41 One-Day Internationals and 14 International appointments to his name. Simon was also named the South Australian Sports

Page 15

Official of the Year for the second time. Awarded at a Gala Event at Adelaide Oval, the annual South Australian Sports Awards honour those who have made an outstanding contribution to and follows a previous award which Simon received in 2013.

Congratulations to everyone who excelled, accomplished their goals and contributed to the success of both umpiring and cricket in the past season.

HISTORY COMMITTEE REPORT (Kristen Thomas)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA,

Seasons come and seasons go, and history is made while we’re busy making plans. During 2017/18 – while our members were busy officiating – some history was made which has a significance that may not reflect its true importance.

While obvious that the development of cricket has, since its commencement in Australia, benefitted from ‘behind-the-scenes’ efforts of women who were spouses of super-contributor male officials, there has been little opportunity for females to progress in on-field roles. As a microcosm of society, cricket has mimicked society’s accepted frameworks during each era – which means chances for females to fulfil traditionally male roles in officiating has taken quite some time to expand. Our Association has seen a small number of women umpire over the last several decades, but it wasn’t until October 2017 that a female was appointed to stand in a SACA Male Premier 1st Grade match. In that legendary month, Eloise Sheridan stood with Craig Thomas during the West End One Day Cup match between Glenelg and Southern District, making her the first female in South Australia to officiate at the top level of State district competition. Later in the season, during February 2018, Eloise became the first woman in Australia to stand in a 1st Grade Male cricket final when she was appointed to the Twenty 20 Grand Final with Bruce Stribley in February this year. Acknowledging these appointments in their contexts of signalling an improvement in gender equity is important – but the hope certainly is that this will be regarded as ‘business as usual’ one day and that both males and females will be consistently offered these great opportunities as part of normal cricket operations.

Our 2017/18 Presentation Night, held in May at the beautiful Adelaide Pavilion, saw two more inductions announced into the SACUSA Hall of Fame. Rita Artis – an amazing scoring contributor who has worked at the ultimate level of competition in international fixtures – was announced as the second Scorer to be bestowed with this honour, and Steve Davis – SACUSA Life Member and former International Cricket Umpire – was also announced as an inductee. While Rita was able to attend - and was kind enough to share some time being interviewed about her fantastic career by MC Extraordinaire, Ben Hook - Steve wasn’t able to share the evening due to travel commitments. However, we’re hopeful that at next year’s Presentation Dinner, both inductees will be able to attend, and receive their official personalised induction mementos which SACUSA creates for each important addition to the Hall of Fame.

With the completion of SACA’s wonderful new function centre at Karen Rolton Oval at Narnungga (Park 25), SACUSA has been granted the long sought-after honour of finding a location at which to hold its monthly in-season meetings on a more permanent basis. Although unfortunate that there isn’t room for our Association to display its growing collection of umpiring and scoring memorabilia there, it’s good to have an answer on that question, as we’re now able to plan for how best to make the collection available to members and the public. Most likely this will initially take the form of digitisation, but the hope is still alive that one day we will find a true ‘home’. In conjunction with the writing of the history of SACUSA’s first one hundred years, the addition of digital options for history accessibility should see everyone given the chance to learn more about the background of cricket umpiring and scoring in South Australia. Cricket Australia also seems committed to uncovering the history of officiating with its undertaking of a research project on the topic. Please accept my very best wishes for your season ahead. May you all make your own historical officiating milestones during, what I hope, will be a fantastic season for you all.

UMPIRE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

The South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association annually awards trophies to those umpires judged as the best umpire in a particular grade/s. The awards, introduced in season 2001/2002 have been named after former Test Umpires who have served both the South Australian Cricket Umpires Association and the South Australian Cricket Association over many years. In the 2009/2010 season the ‘Max O’Connell Award’ was amended to just B Grade and a new award was created for C, D and Women’s Grades.

The John Wilson Memorial Award

In addition to the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association annual awards presented to those umpires judged as the best umpire in a particular grade(s), a new award was struck in the memory of Mr John Wilson with the generosity of EDS. We must also thank Hewlett Packard who have continued to sponsor this award following their acquisition of EDS.

The criteria and nomination process for the John Wilson Memorial Award is as follows:

Criteria  Reflect significant contributions to umpiring and/or cricket Process  The Executive Committee to appoint a sub-committee to consider and nominate candidates  Nominations are to be received from the general membership or from the sub-committee with the winner determined by the full Executive Committee.

The Joyce McMenamin Trophy

In 2015 the Executive Committee, after being approached by Judy Little (a very supportive partner of former SACUSA President and longstanding SACUSA supporter, David Little) decided to create an award to officially recognise significant unofficial contributions by members’ partners. The reason was to acknowledge the fact that SACUSA’s support of South Australian cricket officials is significantly enhanced by ‘behind-the-scenes’ contributions from people who may have never actually officiated in cricket themselves. With the research completed by the History Sub-Committee, it was decided to name the trophy after Joyce McMenamin, the wife of long serving committee member, John McMenamin.

The criteria and nomination process for the Joyce McMenamin Trophy are as follows:

Criteria  Reflect significant contributions to SACUA/SACUSA sustainability during any era of the organisation’s existence Process  The Executive Committee to appoint a sub-committee to consider and nominate candidates  Nominations are to be received from the general membership or from the sub-committee with the winner determined by the full Executive Committee.

THE BRADMAN MEDAL During season 1957/58 three SACUA Umpires, John McMenamin, Jack Kierse and Gordon Seymour, were enjoying a quiet drink after a SACUA meeting at the Hotel Adelaide in Pirie Street, when the ‘idea’ of an award for the best A Grade District Cricketer was proposed. The original award, first made after season 1958/59, was based on one vote per game for the best player during an ‘A’ Grade match. The first presentation dinner was held at the Seven Stars Hotel in Angas Street, Adelaide and was attended by approximately 30 umpires. Votes were counted during the dinner and, at the conclusion of the count, joint winners Ian McLachlan and Brian Quigley were announced. Neither of the winners were in attendance and taxis were sent to their homes to bring them to the dinner to receive their award. During season 1976/77 it was decided that the District Cricketer Award should be renamed as the Bradman Medal and Sir Donald Bradman was approached for his approval. “The Don” agreed and said that he would be honoured to have the award named after him. The presentation of this prestigious award has continued and the Bradman Medal Presentation Dinner is now recognised as the pinnacle of any cricket season in South Australia. Season 2007/08 celebrated 50 years since the inception of the District Cricketer Award/Bradman Medal. To celebrate this occasion winners (or family members) of the District Cricketer Award from 1956/57 to 1975/76 were presented with a Bradman Medal at the Bradman Medal Presentation Dinner on 19th March 2008. Also on the night three players who lost on a count-back were awarded Bradman Medals. PAST WINNERS HONOUR ROLL 1958/59 I. McLachlan Sturt 1991/92 T. Harms Glenelg B. Quigley University 1992/93 D.
