  • Muzeului Banatului Intre Anii 1923-1998

R O M U L NU Ț IU elan vital ROMUL NU Ț IU elan vital BUCHAREST C ONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY ROMUL NU Ț IU elan vital ROMUL NU Ț IU elan vital An energizing bath in color! Romul Nuţiu’s paintings transport the color in a dynamic and sovereign way. His abstract expressionism provokes and harmonizes at the same time. Figurative allusions are hidden, vanishing behind the power of color. In his creation, the author conveys the idea of “elan vital”, initiated by the French philosopher Henri Bergson. This “philosophem” defines an omnipresent spiritual force which produces the development and can be perceived only intuitively and not rationally, appearing in all the creation processes - be they artistic or scientific - and also in nature’s development. Guided by spontaneous intuition and driven by his semantic complexity, the artist moves beyond the canvas, as the only action field, creating objects and installations which are more like paintings transposed in space. Thus the creative act becomes an event. Romul Nuţiu approaches shape and movement with confidence and determination. Although structured, he never loses the liberty to improvise. The source of inspiration of his graphic and expressive language is nature: especially the plant, the stem – vegetal and earthly structures, and the root – underground vegetal structures; it feeds from the soil and returns fertility to it, and in this permanent struggle for survival it is akin to man. Romul Nuţiu’s works produce transcendence, hidden spirituality. The Waterfalls, Birds, Ball diary, Cross-sections Through the Fertile Ground, Windows… even those works simply called Composition - all reveal, despite their diversity, the accomplished artist’s sure hand and personal style.

Victor Neumann DOI: 10.2298/BALC1344391N Original scholarly work West University of Timişoara Timişoara between “Fictive Ethnicity” and “Ideal Nation” The Identity Profile during the Interwar Period Abstract: Seeking to delineate the identity profile of the citizens of interwar Timişoara, a city at the crossroad of Central- and South-East-European cultures and civiliza- tions, the paper analyzes the national, linguistic and religious population structure using the data provided by three censuses (1910, 1930 and 1941). Under Hungarian rule, until the First World War, there prevailed the policy of linguistic nationalism. After 1918, in Romania, there occurred a policy shift towards ethno-culturally based differentiation, i.e. towards belonging to a nation. Yet, amidst the interaction of cul- tures and customs, the notion of nationality or ethno-nationality was quite relative, and Timişoara functioned as a multilingual and multireligious environment. Con- tradictions were observable between nationalist political orientation and aspirations of local society. The Jewish community was an embodiment of multiculturalism. The Jews enjoyed equal rights and functioned as a bridge between other communities. In the 1930s multicultural Timişoara seems to have been a contrast to the cities where different linguistic and religious communities lived parallel lives in isolation from one another. Thus, Timişoara resisted radical, racist and anti-Semitic movements that emerged on the European political scene in the interwar period. Keywords: Timişoara, population structure, nationality, official identity policies, multi- lingualism, multiconfessionality, multiculturality, Jewish community y study aims to call attention to the identity profile of Timişoara during the interwar period, a city at the crossroads of cultures and civilizationsM between Central and South-Eastern Europe.
