5 GROVE CITY COLLEGE SEASON PREVIEW For the past two seasons, the Grove City College men's basketball program has fielded one of the youngest teams in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. But as the Wolverines prepare for the 2013-14 season, the youthful players of previous campaigns have grown into an upperclassman unit that is prepared to lead Grove City back to the top of the conference. While Grove City has just one senior on its roster this winter, the Wolverines feature plenty of experience as 12 veterans return from last year. Senior captain Evan Schell returns for his final season and will compete for a prominent role in the Grove City backcourt this year. A sharp-shooting left-hander, Schell is a returning letterwinner who has made 54 total appear- ances in his career. Six juniors, including three returning starters, are back in the fold after lettering last year. Guard Mitch Marmelstein led the Wolverines in scoring, rebounds and assists last year and earned Second Team All-PAC honors. He is ex- pected to be a key contributor at both ends of the floor. Like Marmelstein, junior guard J.T. Schwartz is a two- year starter for Grove City. He shared the team lead with 40 three-pointers last year and brings scoring ability to the point guard spot. Schwartz ranked second on the team in scoring as a sophomore. Forward Brian Giesler moved into the starting lineup REVIEW during last season and will be counted on for his scoring P ability both on the perimeter and inside. He tied Schwartz for the team lead in three-point goals last year. Junior guard Josh Patterson returns for his third year Guards Christian Durbin and Josh Patterson have both

Durbin pro- vides playmaking ability from the point while Patterson has emerged as a defensive stopper for Grove City. Forward Ford Reinalda saw extensive action as a part- time starter last season and will again be in the mix for the Wolverines. The 6-foot-4 Reinalda also shot 43 percent from behind the three-point line as a sophomore. Grove City also returns five men in its sophomore class. Center Erik Carlstrom will look to fill the void up front after playing in 25 games as a rookie. He led the team in blocked shots last year. Forward Tyler Patterson emerged as his freshman sea- son progressed and will look to have an increased role this year. Guards Isaiah Reeves, Stephen Tam and Joe Vermilya all saw action as freshmen and will battle for starting spots this year. Reeves moved into the starting lineup late in the 2012- 13 season and could join Josh Patterson as a defensive stopper. Tam can play both guard spots while Vermilya provides another reliable perimeter option. Junior forward Brian Giesler shared the team lead with Several newcomers could also work their way into the 40 three-point goals as a sophomore. lineup this season.

PROGRAM HISTORY

Since its inception in the 1898-99 season, the Grove City College men’s basketball team has compiled over 1,100 wins and numerous championships while producing an in- numerable number of outstanding players. Grove City began play late in the 1898-99 season with a 32-9 loss at Allegheny in Meadville, Pa. After winning just three of its first 13 games in the first three seasons, Grove City found success in early years of the 20th Century. Edward Campbell took over as player-head coach in 1901 and directed the Wolverines to Tri-State champion- ships in 1903 and 1905. In his four seasons as head coach, Campbell compiled a 50-13 mark. Frank Hays, William Brown and Fred Locke all spent time at the helm in the latter half of the decade before Weir C. Ketler took control in 1910. Al Pesek then coached for one season before Jim Curry led Grove City to a 13-5 record in 1955-56.
