20082008 SSEASON PPREVIEW With 16 returning lettermen back in the fold this season, the Grove City College baseball team enters 2008 with one of its deepest and most ex- perienced squads in recent memory. The Wolverines will rely on a six-man senior class and numerous other veterans in their pur- suit of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference cham- pionships and a berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament. For the first time ever, the PAC baseball cham- pion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. That additional reward will only serve as further motivation for the Wolverines in the quest for their third conference crown this decade. PITCHING Prior to the 2007 season, Grove City featured a well-stocked bullpen but plenty of questions concerning the starting rotation. This season, the experience -- and the vacancies -- are distributed more evenly. Senior Chris Bowser returns at the top of the starting rotation after leading the Wolverines in Junior Brad Stombaugh will compete for the starts (eight) and wins (five) last season. starting post at first base this season. INFIELD Grove City returns three full-time starters and a quartet part-time regulars in the infield this sea- son. At catcher, senior Ray Mertz enters his third year as the starter. Mertz is a two-time All-PAC selection and is a two-year team captain. He hit .349 as a junior and will be a stalwart in the middle of the order. Senior Bryan Pierrot is a three-year starter in the infield and returns at second base. Pierrot has also played third base during his career at Grove City and is coming off a 2007 season in which he hit .353. Pierrot is joined up the middle by junior short- stop Ben Wilson. Wilson is a two-year starter who has hit over .300 in each of his first two seasons at Grove City. Grove City also has plenty of flexibility at the corner positions. At first base, junior Brad Sophomore Michael Herringshaw is back for his Stombaugh and sophomore Tyler Thompson will second year in Grove City’s starting rotation. both see extensive action.

Sophomore Zach Wilson, Ben Wilson’s younger brother, is also a contender for the third base job. OUTFIELD The Wolverines strength up the middle is not limited to the infield. 20020077 IIN RREVIEW The 2007 season featured a wide range of emotions for the Grove City College baseball team: the joy that comes with the best start in program history; the disappointment of a midseason slide; the sadness and shock that comes with the unex- pected passing of a friend and mentor; and the optimism that arises from a strong finish. Grove City opened the 2007 season by win- ning four of five games in Port Charlotte, Fla. March 1-3. The Wolverines split a doubleheader with na- tionally-ranked Augustana (Ill.) before sweeping St. John’s (Minn.). The Wolverines then wrapped up the trip with an 11-9, 10-inning win over Concordia-Moorhead March 3. Catcher Ray Mertz hit .500 during the trip and also drove in a team-leading seven runs. Center fielder Brian Moran made an immediate impact dur- ing his first week in a Wolverine uniform by hitting .471 and scoring six runs. N Grove City continued its winning ways as the northern portion of the schedule began. The Wol- verines opened the conference schedule March 26 by blitzing Saint Vincent in Latrobe, Pa., 8-1 and 7-3. 2007 I Shortstop Ben Wilson homered in each half of the doubleheader, including a three-run blast in the second game. Starting pitchers Bowser and Hillegas picked up the victories. Grove City completed a sweep of Saint Vincent three days later with a 10-8 victory. Bryan Pierrot’s two-run homer in the seventh broke a 5-5 tie. Re- liever Matt Tindall recorded the final five outs to pick up his first save of the season. The Wolverines improved to 8-1 March 30 with a 15-4 home win over conference foe Bethany. Grove City fell behind 4-1 but stormed back with 14 unanswered runs. Moran went 3-for-6 with a double while Brad Stombaugh also collected three hits. Senior reliever Eric Hull fired 5 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the victory in relief of Herringshaw. Grove City capped the best start in program history by raising its record to 9-1 March 31 by earning a 6-1 victory at Bethany.
