SUBJECT: FAMILY MOVIE FRIDAYS AFTER ACTION REPORT

SUMMARY

Staff recommends that the Community Services Commission receive and file this informational report on the status of the 2019 Family Movie Fridays Program. ANALYSIS

The 2019 Family Movie Fridays was a six-movie series conducted on alternating evenings beginning Friday, June 14th and ending Friday, August 16th. All movies were shown in Memorial Park and the crowd enjoyed the outdoor movie-going experience and open air seating based on participant feedback.

Each movie was shown at the band shell starting at approximately 8:00p.m., or when darkness permitted. The film line-up featured current, animated movies, all which received positive reviews and popular with the demographic. Guests would set up with their lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic settings.

Movies were predominantly intended for families with children; however, the intergenerational program welcomed young and old and in between. Attendance was exceptionally strong throughout the series this year with audience sizes averaging up to 300.

PROMOTION

This event was publicized in the monthly calendars and flyers released from Sierra Madre Library and the Community Services Department. Baldwin Ave. street banners, local press releases, Sierra Madre Merchants, Sierra Madre/ Pasadena YMCA, City Kiosk in Kersting Court and City Hall were done as well. Sierra Madre Community Services Facebook, as well as the Sierra Madre Community Services Instagram (@sm_community_services) and the eBlasts from the Village View Newsletter were all continued as promotional efforts.

STAFFING

Three City Staff were present at each movie night to setup, facilitate, and breakdown the event. Setup and breakdown were more involved as there was an inflatable large screen, generator, projector assembly, audio equipment and DVD.

Staff communicated with patrons, handed out flyers, and attended to audio/visual concerns.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS

2019 Movie Sponsorship fees helped cover the cost of the movie licensing and on-site staff time. The Sierra Madre Issei Memorial Foundation, Sierra Madre Volunteer Firefighters Association, The Sierra Madre Police Association, “OFF!” Bug Spray – Be the Machine Marketing and DreamWorks Animation; and Alliant Marketing all donated and sponsored full movie nights.
