Helen, Moderator Jenny, EarthCare A Room with a View”—and You? The next show in the Resident Art Gallery, mounted by the committee for the gal- lery, goes up on Sunday, August 22. You may think that it’s only early July--lots of time to think of and execute an art work for the show, but the time goes fast, par- ticularly now that Pennswood is full of activities again. The theme of the show is “Room with a View" and the song that phrase comes from goes on to say that the next wanted item is you. The song is an inexorable earworm. Clear it from your head by bringing your art to the Resident Art Gallery on Thursday, August 19. Once again, let me remind you to prepare your artwork properly so it is not turned back at the door. Please frame all pictures of whatever medium and make sure they have secure wire on the back from which to hang. Artwork in clay should be able to stand securely on our pedestals. We look for fine art in the Resident Art Gallery and look forward to seeing yours.

Composting at the Community Garden The Community Garden is not available for any communal composting at this time. The committee recognizes the efforts, put forth in the past, as well meaning residents have put their kitchen waste in the weed bins outside the garden fence or in the black enclosed container within the garden fence. However we can no longer accept kitchen waste put out in the open due to the fact it has attracted undesirable critters and the enclosed container needs a little more study to assure it will produce good compost. That study is being organized by Jenny Hollingshead. Thank you

for your cooperation. Kay, Community Garden Credit: Yoma

Croquet Team Seeks Players We’d like to rebuild our championship croquet team - yes, we beat Foulkeways last time four games to one; it was quite a match.

But our croquet competition with Meadow Lakes and Foulkeways has been on hold for several years (with retirements and pandemics and so on).

So I’d like you to consider playing for our Pennswood team: we would teach you the rules of the game - and the etiquette of the game - and most importantly, the strategy of the game. A “jump shot” in croquet is not the same as a “jump shot” in basketball!

Now - we only play other CCRCs on beautiful days; we wear our whites; we each play one game - two at the most; we play three games in the morning and two after lunch; and we have a blast! Come and Join us!

Digging for the truth—From the Trips Committee by Trip Host David Swain

If you are a resident who appreciates archeology and would like to take a Pennswood trip to the Penn Museum of Archeology, read on. Some of us have been there previously, guided by our one -time resident archeologist Elin. This time, we will have to manage without her humor and knowledge. As host for a proposed new trip to Penn Museum, probably in November, I thought about including a museum group tour. We might spend 2 or 2½ hours at the museum, including one hour in a group tour, plus time to explore the collection on our own. Then we could have lunch to- gether and head home.

I would like to learn some of your preferences as I seek to plan this trip. If you’re interested in going on it, please take a few minutes to respond in writing, as follows: Name: ______Apt. #______:

1. Would you rather have: __ a featured guided tour (see choices below) plus some free time to explore OR __ use all your museum time to explore the collection on your own?

2. Would you feel safely healthy having lunch at an inside restaurant with our Pennswood group? (circle one) yes or no. If yes, can you suggest a restaurant we might consider that you know has good food, ambiance, reasonable lunch prices, and is located more or less on the Center City- Pennswood route? (Name of the restaurant:______)

3. If we do a guided tour, what would be your top three choices for the tour’s subject? We can in- clude only one tour on this trip, but we might make a return trip, if interest is high, and take another tour. Here is a summary of choices:

Tours of Museum Galleries: __Africa, __Asia, __Canaan/Israel, __Egypt, __Greece, __Mexico/Central America, __Middle East, or __Rome/Etruscan Italy.

Thematic Tours: __ Ancient Alcohol: A Taste of Bygone Booze—tour and (modern) beer tasting __ Ancient Egypt: From Discovery to Display—stories of archeological finds __ Immigrants, Refugees, and Occupiers in the Ancient World __ Monsters, Myths, and Legends—mostly Greek mythology __ Native American Voices around the museum __ Queens, Warriors, and Archeologists—women in Penn Museum __ Stories We Wear (special exhibit opening Sept. 25)—What personal/social meaning do we give to the clothing and decorations we wear? How do archeologists learn about how ancient people felt about what they wore?

Note: Probable cost about $60 per person for the bus + museum entry + tour (if we take it). Lunch is also on our own. Please return your answers to my open mail box by Thursday, July 15. Then, stay tuned for the Bulletin notice that will announce sign ups for this trip.

18 David & Caroline Reach out and Touch It Denali National Park, AK 2005

During our fourth visit to Denali, we sought a new view of the great mountains without ex- cessive hiking. On a cold, clear morning, a helicopter took us close to glaciers and snowy peaks. In this view, the nearby peak, coated with marshmallow, did seem close enough al- most to dip a finger in the topping. While in the background looms the much higher Mt. Denali (for many years Mt. McKinley), at over 20,000 feet, the highest in North Ameri- ca. The helicopter ride was breathtaking and the too-quick return to earth a let-down.

19 David & Caroline Arguing Buddhist Logic A Monastery at Lhasa, Tibet 2007

Practicing Buddhism is a way of life, not just attending weekly services. In Tantric Buddhist areas such as Tibet and Bhutan, young men, especially first-born sons, are expected to live the life of monks for a peri- od of time and to both memorize and under- stand the sacred scriptures. These student- monks are practicing arguing the logical points of the scriptures. Both expounding and listening are required, and use of body language is both forceful and dramatic (extended elbows are in motion). David ex- perienced this noisy, exhilarating scene while visiting a Tibetan monastery during his and Caroline’s trip to China.

20 David & Phalanx of Double-Deckers Caroline Hong Kong, China 2007

Which way should we look before crossing? Hong Kong was confusing after three weeks in China. Besides traffic driving on the left, the double-decker buses looked to us about the same from the front or rear. In 2007, Hong Kong was still putting up a spirited de- fense of its unique British/European way of life. We didn’t know then that by 2020, Chi- na would have begun to turn the cultural and political screws on Hong Kong’s population.

21 Yoma Rear-Ended in Ponce Ponce de Leon, Puerto Rico 2013

Visiting Ponce de Leon, an old city in Puer- to Rico, my group came upon an upscale group of wedding guests waiting for the bride to arrive. The dominant color of their expensive dresses was red. The ladies in- side them were well upholstered with one exception who neither wore red nor was plump. The ladies had prepared themselves to be seen from the front: we were at the back. Hiding behind a low wall, I took many photos amid our group’s giggles. Why those ladies didn’t call the police on us I don’t know. Eventually the bride walked swiftly into the church upon the arm of someone military. The ladies followed. I retracted my telephoto lens and went off to con- tent myself with slimmer fare.
